The Forgotten Battles and Sacrifices Behind Memorial Day

For many Americans, Memorial Day means backyard cookouts, long weekends, and the unofficial start of summer. But the holiday itself was created for a far more solemn reason: honoring the American troops who never made it home from war. Some of the deadliest and most important battles in U.S. history, from Battle of Antietam to Battle of Normandy, helped shape the national culture of remembrance that Memorial Day represents today. Here, History Computer is taking a closer look at battles Memorial Day was created to honor.
