20 One-Hit Wonders From the ’70s You Still Know Every Word To

Some songs never needed a second act. They arrived, became enormous hits, and then somehow outlived the artists’ brief moment at the top. More than 40 years later, you can still hear them playing through restaurant speakers, on oldies radio, or at a family gathering, and catch yourself singing every word before you even realize it.

The 1970s produced an astonishing number of artists who struck gold once and never managed to repeat the success. In some cases, changing tastes or record-label problems ended the momentum. In others, the song simply became so much bigger than the performer that nothing afterward could compete with it.

These tracks have lasted because they were more than temporary hits. Some were irresistible novelties, some captured the sound of an entire era, and a few were genuine masterpieces. Nostalgia certainly helps, but great hooks do not survive for decades by accident. Here are 20 one-hit wonders from the 1970s that are still living in our heads rent-free.
