10 American Cities That Aren’t What They Used to Be

Sometimes, it is hard to pinpoint exactly what a city has lost. The buildings are still there, the streets still run in the same directions, and the postcards probably look about the same. But for longtime residents, something feels different. The place they remember has started to fade, replaced by a version that feels more expensive, more crowded, more polished, or simply less like itself.

Across the country, many American cities that once had a strong sense of identity are struggling to hold onto it. In some places, years of neglect and poor planning have taken a toll. In others, rising housing costs have pushed out the people who gave the city its personality in the first place. Tourism, development, chain businesses, and changing local economies can all reshape a place until the old charm feels harder to find.

That does not mean these cities are gone or that they are no longer worth visiting. Many are still beautiful, historic, and full of life. But for the people who knew them before, there is a clear feeling that something has changed. These are 10 American cities where locals say the charm is starting to slip away.
