25 School Rules Every Kid Had to Follow Decades Ago That Would Be Banned Today

School rules have changed dramatically over the decades, and some once-common policies now seem hard to imagine. Earlier generations of students dealt with strict dress codes, harsh discipline, speech restrictions, gendered expectations, and classroom rules that would likely face serious legal, cultural, or parental pushback today.

This History Computer list looks back at 25 school rules kids were expected to follow in the past and explains why many of them disappeared. Some now seem funny or oddly specific, while others reveal how much American education has changed around student rights, safety, fairness, and discipline. Editors compiled this list using sources such as the U.S. Department of Education, Pew Research Center, FindLaw, the National Coalition Against Censorship, and historical education resources.
