20 Hollywood Roles Actors Had to Fight to Win

Some of Hollywood’s most unforgettable performances almost never happened. Before certain actors became forever linked with their most famous characters, they had to survive brutal auditions, skeptical casting directors, studio hesitation, or serious competition from other stars who were also chasing the part.

That struggle is what makes these roles so interesting in hindsight. Some actors were too unknown, too risky, or considered completely wrong for the character before they proved everyone wrong. Others had to campaign hard for the chance, betting that one role could change the course of their career. Today, it is difficult to imagine anyone else in these parts, which makes the behind-the-scenes fight to win them even more compelling.

To create this list of the hardest-fought roles in Hollywood history, History Computer reviewed entertainment reporting, actor interviews, and film industry sources, including Good Morning America and IMDb.
