The United States operates the world’s largest military aircraft fleet, and its naval aviation arm remains one of the most powerful air fleets anywhere. While the U.S. Air Force gets much of the attention, the Navy’s aircraft are central to America’s ability to project power from the sea, support carrier strike groups, conduct surveillance, move personnel and equipment, and respond quickly to threats around the world. Recent global air-power rankings continue to place U.S. military aviation far ahead of other nations by total aircraft, with the Navy representing a major share of that reach.
But not every important Navy aircraft is new. Some of the service’s most durable planes have remained relevant for decades because they are reliable, adaptable, and repeatedly upgraded to meet changing mission needs. This look at an 89-year-old flying legend explains why the Navy has continued to rely on a design with deep roots in aviation history, and how older aircraft can still play a meaningful role in modern military operations.
How Many US Navy Planes?
With more than 4,012 naval aircraft in service, the US Navy is as formidable in the air as at sea. Of course, not all of these planes are combat-ready as many functions as transportation, surveillance, maritime patrol, early earning command and control, and electronic warfare disruptors.
Still, it's hard to ignore the size of the US Navy's aerial force if you're considering engaging the United States in combat. While the Air Force is still significant, at over 5,500 aircraft, the Navy is equally dangerous. Combined with this, the United States's air superiority is unmatched by any other nation in the world.
Most Used Navy Aircraft
As of the latest available data, the F/A-18 Super Hornet is one of the most widely used aircraft in the US Navy. Even more so than the EA-18 Growler, which offers the Navy 153 different mission-ready aircraft.
