Avoid These States with the Highest Concentration of Hate Groups

Hate groups in the United States have not disappeared. In many cases, they are growing, reorganizing, and becoming more visible. While civil rights progress has reshaped the country over decades, extremist organizations continue to target communities based on race, religion, and identity, often fueling real-world violence and intimidation.

Using data from the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Year in Hate and Extremism report alongside U.S. Census population data, this slideshow breaks down where hate groups are most concentrated across the country. From long-standing organizations to newer extremist movements, these groups play a measurable role in shaping regional tensions, domestic security concerns, and the broader social climate. Understanding where they are most active offers a clearer picture of how influence, recruitment, and risk vary from state to state.
