The World’s Fastest Climbing Fighter Jets, Ranked
Modern fighter jets are designed to reach high altitudes quickly, giving pilots a major tactical advantage in combat. Rapid climb performance allows aircraft to intercept enemy targets faster, escape threats, and gain superior positioning in aerial engagements. Because of this, the maximum rate of climb is one of the most important performance metrics for modern military aircraft.
Recent geopolitical tensions have also highlighted the importance of advanced fighter capabilities. As the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, Western allies have begun supplying Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets to strengthen its air defenses and challenge Russian air power. However, advanced air defense systems such as Russia’s S-400 surface-to-air missile batteries can limit how and where these aircraft operate, sometimes forcing pilots to fly at lower altitudes or rely on different tactics.
In this slideshow, History Computer takes a closer look at some of the fighter jets with the fastest vertical climb rates in the world. To identify these aircraft, History Computer reviewed data from Military Factory, a database that tracks military vehicles, aircraft, and weapons systems. Aircraft were ranked by their maximum rate of climb, measured in feet per minute, with additional information about manufacturers, speed, and performance specifications.
Several of the jets near the top of the list come from Russia, including aircraft like the MiG-35 and the Su-57. These advanced fighters are capable of extremely rapid ascents and are part of the newest generation of combat aircraft designed for modern aerial warfare.
