The Evolution of U.S. Army Sidearms From the 1700s to Today

The sidearm has long played an important role in U.S. Army equipment, evolving alongside advances in firearm technology and military strategy. From early flintlock pistols carried during the American Revolution to modern semi-automatic handguns used by today’s soldiers, Army sidearms reflect more than two centuries of weapons development.

To identify the sidearms used by the U.S. Army since the 18th century, History Computer reviewed historical military records, including the Army report Survey of U.S. Army: Uniforms, Weapons, and Accoutrements. Earlier firearms are categorized by the era in which they were most commonly used, while more modern handguns are listed with their specific years of service.

This list traces the evolution of U.S. Army sidearms from the earliest flintlock pistols to today’s modern military handguns.
