The Elite Snipers Who Shaped Modern Special Operations

For more than a century, sharpshooters have played an important role in the evolution of special operations warfare. From the remarkable precision of Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä during the Winter War to the extreme range capabilities of modern Special Operations Forces (SOF) snipers, these marksmen have influenced how militaries deploy small, highly skilled teams on the battlefield. Advances in optics, ballistics, and training have not only improved rifle performance but also expanded the role of snipers as valuable assets for reconnaissance, precision targeting, and mission security.

In this slideshow, History Computer takes a closer look at the sharpshooters who helped shape modern special operations tactics and the individuals whose skill and innovation left a lasting mark on military history.

To identify sharpshooters who influenced the development of special operations warfare, History Computer reviewed historical records, military publications, and defense related sources. These shooters are presented alphabetically. Additional information includes their country of origin, military branch, notable rifles or equipment, and other relevant details. This list is not exhaustive, and many other skilled operators have contributed to the development of modern sniper tactics.

Snipers continue to play a vital role in modern military operations by providing precision fire, long range overwatch, and intelligence gathering. Their ability to neutralize key threats, guide unit movement, and secure positions in both urban and open environments makes them powerful force multipliers.

These 20 figures highlight the skill, innovation, and discipline that helped redefine what small teams can accomplish and why sharpshooters remain essential to many of today’s most elite military units.

Here is a look at the sharpshooters who helped redefine special operations warfare.
