Europe's Largest Military Is Bigger Than France, Germany, and the UK's Combined

Europe has long been defined by its complex military history, shaped in large part by conflicts that altered the course of global power. Today, the continent’s defense landscape reflects a combination of NATO member states and independent nations that maintain some of the strongest armed forces in the world. In this analysis, we examine the largest military forces in Europe and how they compare in size and capability.

Europe’s military strength carries renewed significance amid evolving global dynamics. As the United States shifts more strategic attention toward the Indo-Pacific region and reassesses its role in European defense, European nations face increasing pressure to strengthen their own security frameworks. At the same time, ongoing conflicts such as the war in Ukraine, instability in parts of the Middle East, and intensifying global rivalries have underscored the importance of maintaining credible and modern military forces across the continent.

In response, many European countries have expanded defense budgets, modernized equipment, and deepened cooperative security agreements, particularly within NATO. Evaluating the size and capacity of Europe’s armed forces provides insight into whether the region can sustain long-term stability and deterrence in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.

To determine which countries maintain the largest military forces in Europe, History Computer reviewed the Military Strength Ranking published by Global Firepower, an annually updated defense analytics platform covering 145 nations. Global Firepower ranks countries using its PowerIndex score, which incorporates more than 60 factors, including manpower, equipment, logistics, financial resources, and geographic considerations. Countries in this list are ranked by total military personnel. A lower PowerIndex score reflects greater overall military capability. Additional data points include active personnel counts, aircraft fleets, ground vehicles, and naval assets. Russia is not included in this ranking.
