32 FBI Cases That Shaped American History

Before the early 20th century, the United States did not have a centralized national investigative agency. That changed in 1908 with the creation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which was established to help enforce federal laws and investigate crimes that crossed state lines.

Over time, the FBI became involved in many of the most significant criminal investigations in American history. These cases have ranged from kidnappings and interstate robberies to aircraft hijackings, bombings, and high-profile murder investigations. Many of these events captured national attention and helped shape the development of modern law enforcement in the United States.

Originally created within the Department of Justice by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte, the bureau began as a small group of special agents tasked with investigating federal crimes. As new laws expanded the federal government’s authority to pursue crimes across state boundaries, the agency’s role quickly grew. Under the leadership of J. Edgar Hoover, who became director in 1924, the FBI expanded its investigative reach and developed new methods for tracking criminals and gathering evidence.

Throughout the decades, the FBI has handled a wide range of major investigations that have left a lasting mark on American history. From organized crime and civil rights violations to terrorism and cybercrime, these cases illustrate how federal law enforcement evolved alongside the challenges facing the country.

Here are 32 investigations that redefined U.S. law enforcement:
