Cybersecurity is a fast-growing industry that has grown from almost nothing to a $200 billion market in just the last few years. According to the latest prediction from research firm Fortune Business Insights, the global cybersecurity market is expected to reach USD 376.32 billion by 2029.

With cybercrime continuing to grow and new threats emerging every day, there is no sign that the need for cybersecurity companies will slow down anytime soon. 

In this article, we take a look at some of the largest cybersecurity companies in the world today. These are companies whose businesses are almost entirely dedicated to cybersecurity — not just security software as part of their broader business model.

Each of these businesses falls into one of three main categories: software solutions, services providers, and hybrid security businesses that provide both solutions and services.

Cybersecurity is the practise of protecting computer systems and networks from unauthorized access and malicious attacks. It aims to prevent unauthorized people from accessing or manipulating the sensitive information that is held on the computer system. It also involves implementing measures to detect and respond to any potential threat.

#15 CyberArk — $543 Million Annual Revenue (2022)

Alon N. Cohen founded the CyberArk company in 1999. CyberArk is a publicly traded information security company offering identity management.

The company’s technology is commonly used in hospitals, energy, retail, financial services, and government markets. CyberArk ensures that only authorized individuals can access essential files in those institutions.

The company has its headquarters in Newton, Massachusetts.  As of the Q3 of 2022, CyberArk has over 2400 employees. CyberArk has been publicly traded on NASDAQ as CYBR since 2014 after it filed for an initial public offer (IPO) with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

#14 Kaspersky Lab — $704 Million Annual Revenue (2022)

Kaspersky Lab is a multinational cybersecurity company with its headquarters in Moscow, Russia. Eugine Kaspersky, Alexey De-Monderik, Natalya Kaspersky, and Vadim Bogdanov founded the company in 1997. As of 2020, the company had more than 4000 employees.

The company’s main product is cybersecurity software. In 2008, Kaspersky Lab launched the Global Research and Analysis Team to investigate cyber security threats. Kaspersky Lab grew popular after detecting Stuxnet in 2010 and Flame in 2012, which affected 14 industries in Iran, and 1000 to 5000 machines worldwide, respectively.

#13 Trellix — $940 Million Annual Revenue (2022)

Trellix was formally known as FireEye and McAfee enterprise. The company has its headquarters in Milpitas, California, in the US. The company started in 2004 as FireEye, focusing on virtual machines for downloading and testing internet traffic. In 2013, FireEye acquired Mandiant, a private company that provided response services in cases of data breaches.

Again, in 2014, FireEye acquired another data security breach company, the nPulse. And in 2016, FireEye still acquired another company, the iSIGHT, followed by an IT automation company, Invotas. In June 2021, FireEye sold its name and products to Symphony Technology Group (STG) for 1.2 billion. Later, STG combined FireEye and McAfee to launch Trellix in 2022. 

The company provides hardware, software, and services to investigate cybersecurity attacks, protect against malicious software, and analyze IT security risks. Its products include email security, endpoint security, cyber security hardware and software, management interface, and file security. 

#12 Check Point Software — $2.17 Billion Annual Revenue (2022)

Check Point is an American – Israeli multinational software company headquartered in Tel Aviv, Israel, and San Carlos, California, in the US. Gil Shwed, Marius Nacht, and Shlomo Kramer founded the company in 1993.

The company’s first product was FireWall-1, followed by VPN-1. Check Point acquired other IT companies in the first decade of the 21st century, including Nokia network security.

The company is focused on its fifth-generation cyber security (Gen V), which has its eyes on large-scale and fast-moving attacks on mobile phones.

Check Points products and services include, Network security, Data security, ThreatCloud, Mobile Security, Endpoint Security, Security Management, and Software Defined Protection, among others.

#11 Optiv Security Inc. — $2.5 Billion Annual Revenue (2022)

Optiv is a private information security company with its headquarters in Denver, Colorado. On February 2, 2015, Accuvant and FishNet Security merged to form Optiv Security, Inc. Currently, KKR & Co majorly owns the Optiv company along with the Blackstone Group and other minor investors.

Optiv services include cyber operations and strategies, innovation and integration, identity and access management, risk management, threat management, and cyber digital transformation.

#10 NortonLifeLock — $2.79 Billion Annual Revenue (2022)

NortonLifeLock is an American software company headquartered in Tempe, Arizona. It was formerly known as Symantec Corporation. Gary Hendrix founded the company on March 1, 1982, in Sunnyvale, California. As of 2022, the company had 2700 employees.

NortonLifeLock specializes in selling information security software. Its products include Norton Mobile Security, Norton Online Backup, Norton360, Norton Computer Tune Up, Norton Security, and Norton Utilities.

#9 McAfee — $2.9 Billion Annual Revenue (2022)

McAfee is a global security software company headquartered in San Jose, California. John McAfee founded the company in 1987 as McAfee Associates, Inc., but it later changed to McAfee, LLC in 2017. In February 2011, Intel Security Division acquired McAfee. In 2017, Intel Security and TPG Capital became a McAfee joint venture.

Fortinet is a multinational company that develops and sells cybersecurity solutions to other companies. The company has its headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, in the US. Ken Xie and Michael Xie founded the company in 2000. By December 2021, the company had 10,195 employees across its branches.

Fortinet offers antivirus programs, VPN, web filtering, antispyware, antispam, wireless security control, and intrusion prevention system. Fortinet’s first main product was FortiGate, a physical firewall, followed by antivirus software. Other products include Fortinet Security Fabric, FortiSwitch, FortiClient, FortiAnalyzer, FortiManager, FortiSandbox, and FortiWeb.

#7 Synopsis — $4.2 Billion Annual Revenue (2022)

Synopsis is an electronic design automation company with its headquarters in Mountain View, California, in the US. David Gregory and Aart de Geus founded this company in 1986. As of 2021, Synopsis had 16,361 total employees. 

Recently, Synopsys has included application security testing in its products and services. The main services include software security, silicon design and verification, silicon intellectual property, and software security and quality.  Synopsis has simulators that develop and debug environments for designing computer chips and systems.

Palo Alto Networks is a multinational cybersecurity company with its headquarters in Santa Clara, California. Nir Zuk founded the company in 2005. As of April 30, 2022, Palo Alto Networks had 11,870 employees.

The company’s products and services are utilized in over 70,000 organizations in 150 countries. Eighty-five of these companies belong to the Fortune 100. In addition, the Unit 42 threat research team belongs to Palo Alto Networks. Palo Alto Networks is known for developing firewalls and cloud-based software that offer security to internet users.

#5 Juniper Networks — $4.74 Billion Annual Revenue (2022)

Juniper is a multinational software company with its headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. Pradeep Sindhu founded the company on February 6, 1996. As of December 2021, the company had 10,191 employees.

Juniper Networks develops and sells IT products such as routers, switches, data centers, and wireless networking. It’s among the largest sellers of core routers for internet service providers (ISPs). Juniper Networks’ first product was the Junos router operating system, released on July 1, 1998.

In May 2003, Juniper introduced JProtect security software that included flow monitoring, firewalls, Network Address Translation, and data filtering. Cisco is a multinational conglomerate technology company with its headquarters in San Jose, California. Leonard Bosack and Sandy Lerner founded the company on December 10, 1984. As of 2021, the company had 79,500 employees.

IBM develops and sells computer software, hardware, and middleware and still provides hosting and consulting services. This company offers products and services in the following categories: cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, the internet of things, IT infrastructure, and digital workspace. 

#1 Microsoft — $198.3 Billion Annual Revenue (2022)

Microsoft is a multinational technology company headquartered in Redmond, Washington DC. Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft Corporation on April 4, 1975. As of 2022, the company has 221,000 employees. Microsoft is among the big five technology companies in America, along with Google, Amazon, Meta, and Apple. In 2020, Microsoft ranked no. 21 in Fortune 500 rankings by total revenue.

Initially, Microsoft was to design and sell Basic interpreters for Altair 8800.
