The Greatest Major League Baseball Dynasties of All Time

What are the greatest Major League Baseball dynasties of all time? Baseball is America’s pastime and one of the oldest professional sports played in the country. As such, there is plenty of room for dominant teams to arise. Sadly, my beloved Atlanta Braves don’t make the grade, but your favorite team might.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox wouldn’t win the World Series for nearly a century after this run.

  • Dominant Years: 1903 to 1918
  • World Series Titles: 5
  • Pennants: 6

The Red Sox were a force to be reckoned with at the turn of the century. As one of the first true baseball dynasties to ever exist, they were the team to beat for 16 years. During this time the Rex Sox would win the World Series 5 times and the American League Pennant 6 times.

Philadelphia Athletics

I do have to wonder how effective these old uniforms were for sliding on bases and playing in the heat.

  • Dominant Years: 1910 to 1914
  • World Series Titles: 3
  • Pennants: 1

Before they moved cities, the Athletics were one of the earliest baseball dynasties to take the field. This would have put them in contention with the dominant Red Sox, which certainly is reflected in the championship games the As won. While not as prolific as the Red Sox, they certainly acquitted themselves well on the field.

New York Yankees

The first Yankees run honestly makes me wonder why other teams bothered taking the field.

  • Dominant Years: 1929 to 1964
  • World Series Titles: 20
  • Pennants: 22

When you talk about baseball dynasties, the New York Yankees are the team that created the mold. With an astonishing 44-year run, it isn’t a surprise to see the Yankees on our list. Out of the 44 World Series games held during this period, the Yankees would play 29 of them and won 20 in total.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals were one of a few teams to square off against the dominant Yankees during this time.

  • Dominant Years: 1942 to 1946
  • World Series Titles: 3
  • Pennants: 4

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Cardinals, they’re a scrappy team in the modern era. They had their crack as one of the baseball dynasties to dominate the 1940s, winning 3 World Series titles and taking home the National League Pennant 4 times.

Cincinnati Reds

The 1970s had no shortage of incredible teams playing, truly a lost era of Major League Baseball.

  • Dominant Years: 1970 to 1976
  • World Series Titles: 2
  • Pennants: 4

Dubbed “The Big Red Machine”, the Reds were the team to beat in the 1970s it would seem. The Reds would win 4 National League Pennants and maintained an average of 98 wins per season during their run. Not too shabby considering the killer teams of the era.

Oakland Athletics

The ’70s Athletics uniforms are certainly eye-catching.

  • Dominant Years: 1971 to 1975
  • World Series Titles: 3
  • Pennants: 0

The Athletics moved cities and decided another crack at being a dynasty was worth a look. The Athletics of this era were a force to be reckoned with, winning 3 consecutive World Series titles from 1972 to 1974.

New York Yankees (Again)

I remember this lineup of the Yankees as the one to beat, Jeter and company were just that good.

  • Dominant Years: 1996 to 2003
  • World Series Titles: 4
  • Pennants: 6

As the defacto example of what baseball dynasties should be, the 1996 to 2003 run of the New York Yankees has to be mentioned. This is the era of Joe Torre and superstars like Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada.

San Francisco Giants

The Giants are still a killer team, despite some middling seasons.

  • Dominant Years: 2010 to 2014
  • World Series Titles: 3
  • Pennants: 0

The most recent of the baseball dynasties to take the field is the San Francisco Giants, one of a handful of West Coast representatives on this list. The Giants had a run you’d envy in the 2010s, winning 3 World Series over 5 years.
