Unfortunately, no matter how many security measures are in place, stolen cars remain a fact of life. While overall theft volume varies, it’s not uncommon to see around one million vehicles stolen annually. While pickup trucks used to be among the most stolen cars, the tide has turned a bit. According to a report from NICB.org, which tracks the most stolen vehicles, six out of ten are Kia or Hyundai models. With this in mind, let’s look at the most stolen vehicles in 2023.
10. Kia Sportage
- 2023 thefts: 15,749
Something of a crossover SUV in Kia’s lineup, the Kia Sportage is the first of three models on this list from Kia. Like other Kia models on this list, the Sportage is well-equipped and has turned a corner with reliability over the last decade.
9. Ford F-150 Series Pickup
- 2023 thefts: 15,852
The most popular pickup on the road for the last 50 years, the Ford F-150 is unsurprisingly one of the most stolen vehicles in America. Given the sheer number of F-150 models on the road, they can be found everywhere.
8. Kia Forte
- 2023 thefts: 16,209
One of Kia’s smallest models, the Forte offers a strong selection of safety, standard features, and specs. Given Kia’s typical reliability, it’s not surprising that the Forte is an attractive target for theft.
7. Honda Civic
- 2023 thefts: 19,858
The Honda Civic is one of the best-selling cars for all the right reasons. Compact, reliable, and well-equipped, it is not surprising that it is on this list. Given how many are sold yearly, the Civic easily blends in when stolen.
6. Honda Accord
- 2023 thefts: 20,895
One of the most popular sedans on the road today, the Honda Accord blends in everywhere. It’s great for a family of four or a young individual just finding their place in the world. You can even choose a hybrid and/or a gas model.
5. Kia Soul
- 2023 thefts: 21,001
Something of a crossover SUV, the Kia Soul is an inexpensive vehicle in Kia’s lineup that’s focused on a younger audience. The Soul’s unique styling and a surprising amount of interior storage have helped make it popular.
4. Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- 2023 thefts: 23,721
One of the most popular pickups in the country, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is everywhere. With so many Silverados on the road, it’s hardly surprising that it’s an attractive target for theft as it blends in rural and urban areas.
3. Kia Optima
- 2023 thefts: 30,204
Now replaced by the Kia K5, the Kia Optima was a four-door sedan in Kia’s lineup and a direct competitor to the Hyundai Sonata. As with the Hyundai, the Kia comes well-equipped, making it easy to argue why it’s number three on the list of most stolen vehicles.
2. Hyundai Sonata
- 2023 thefts: 42,813
The Hyundai Sonata is one of the brand’s most popular vehicles and offers excellent value for the money. With plenty of standard features, it’s hardly surprising to see it’s an attractive target for theft nationwide.
1. Hyundai Elantra
- 2023 thefts: 48,445
A compact car, the Hyundai Elantra is a terrific vehicle for basic transportation and a great choice for first-time drivers. It’s fuel-efficient and small enough to park just about everywhere.
