This Crucial Battle Opened Up the Western Front
What rides on a battle? Wars are complex, especially when factoring in modern politics. However, the Second World War is the last true peer conflict for most nations. As such, we're looking at the most important battles of World War 2.
Why Do These Numbers Matter?
World War II was an important part of history, not only for Americans but for the entirety of the world. It's been about 80 years since the war, but it's important never to forget the lives lost, the people who fought on both sides and the common people who suffered just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
What Battle Sealed Germany's Fate?
There isn't any one particular battle which doomed Nazi Germany's ambitions to failure. However, we can point to the ill-conceived Operation Barbarossa as a turning point for the German war plan. The entire operation saw millions of soldiers dead for the Germans, with little gained in terms of territory and resources.
Could the Axis Have Won the Second World War?
Without American, British Commonwealth, and Soviet involvement, it was entirely possible. However, you have to consider that the Second Sino-Japanese War was in full swing and was largely at a stalemate. Coupled with the Third Reich's reckless spending and the poor fortunes of Fascist Italy's military, it was a surprise the war lasted for six years as it did.
