What’s an Electric Vehicle (EV) Range?

An electric vehicle range refers to how far an electric car travels when the battery is fully charged compared to the energy (battery capacity) it takes to drive that distance.

For instance, if you drive at 55 km per day and your EV’s battery capacity is 50 kilowatt hours, the range would be 50 kWh x 55 km / 100 = 27.5 kWh per 100 km.

Similarly, the battery capacity and consumption figure ratings can be used to estimate your vehicle’s range. In the previous example, the range would be 50 kWh x 5 miles/kWh = 200 miles (321.9 km).

What Affects EV Range?

The distance your EV can cover per single full charge is affected by several factors.

Speed

The faster you drive, the more energy is required to move your EV forward and the less it has at its disposal for maintaining speed.

Terrain

Driving up steep terrain requires more energy from your battery pack than driving on a level surface. This is because less kinetic energy is available while going uphill and overcoming gravity (which requires more power). Combining speed and terrain ultimately affects the range, depending on individual elements.

Temperature

The temperature range also affects how much charge remains on your Tesla vehicle’s battery pack when none’s in use. This means heating systems like air conditioning have less efficiency in colder temperatures. Therefore, your range value can drop significantly during colder months.

Bottom Line: Is an EV Right for Me?

If you’re considering purchasing an EV, we hope this guide has helped you understand the effects a 100% charge will have on your range. EVs are a great option if you’re looking for something flexible, with less maintenance and zero gas consumption

There is a lot of debate about the range of an electric vehicle, and the world is abuzz about EVs. Some people believe it can travel up to 400 miles on a single charge, while others claim that you’ll need to charge your car every night and at work if you want to get anywhere near that figure.

Most people who switch to EVs will confirm that range anxiety isn’t as scary as it seems. You only need proper prior planning of your route, estimated recharge time, and a bit of forethought, and you’ll be good to go.
