The latest arrival in the Galaxy S lineup, the S23 Ultra, is the best Samsung phone in terms of performance and camera specs.

Its greatest highlight is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset optimized for Samsung. This CPU performs better than any other chipset on the market, including the Apple A16 Bionic, and gives the phone sufficient power for multitasking, gaming, and streaming.

Advanced photo and video options include a 200MP main camera, up to 8K resolution, Expert RAW and Pro modes for professional photography, and a specific Astrophotography Mode that captures superb images of constellations and other celestial objects. The design combines the curved edge specific to the Galaxy S phones with the rectangular shape and built-in S Pen specific to the Galaxy Note.

We miss the audio jack and expandable memory found in earlier Samsung models, but the smartphone does work with USB-C earphones. You won’t get a charger either, but that’s a small price to pay for the best Samsung phone.

The brand offers its Galaxy S23 Ultra in four standard colors (Green, Phantom Black, Lavender, and Cream) and four exclusive colors (Lime Sky Blue, Graphite, and Red). The exclusive colors are only available via the official website. Size options vary from 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage to 12GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage.

ProsCons
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset outperforms all other smartphone CPUs, including the A16 Bionic from Apple. The Galaxy S23 Ultra doesn’t have expandable memory or an audio jack.
This smartphone features a superb camera setup, including a 200MP main camera. The box includes a USB type-C cable but not the charger.
Internal storage options vary from 256GB (8GB RAM) to 1TB (12GB RAM)

With an internal display almost as large as a tablet, the Galaxy Z Fold4 is the best choice for creatives and multitaskers.

This smartphone runs on Android 12L and impresses with a bright main display, an upgraded taskbar compared to its predecessor, and improved battery life. The 7.6-inch inner display is large enough to run apps side-by-side, and you can even drag and drop content between windows. Meanwhile, the 6.2-inch cover display lets you access all apps and functions without unfolding the phone.

The 50MP main camera is no match for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but it holds its own against other Samsung phones and other flagship devices, including the iPhone 14. One of our favorite features is the slimmer bezel that increases the usable surface of the display. However, Samsung hasn’t improved the hinge design, and the two sides don’t fold completely flush.

The phone is also thick and heavy, which is noticeable when using it in bed for more than a few minutes. Another downside is the crease across the middle of the inner display where the device folds, which is an eyesore when using the device in broad daylight.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 comes in three standard colors, Graygreen, Phantom Black, and Beige, and two standard storage options, 256GB and 512GB. If you need a larger internal memory, Samsung offers a model with 1TB of storage, exclusive to the Samsung website.

ProsCons
Drag-and-drop between multiple windows makes the Z Fold4 ideal for multitasking. The main display crease is easily visible in bright light.
The slimmer bezel compared to the Z Fold3 maximizes the display surface.Samsung hasn’t improved the hinge design, so the two sides don’t fold flush against one another.
The cover display allows you to access all apps and functionalities when folded.

A lot smaller and more pocket-friendly than the Z Fold4, the Galaxy Z Flip4 is optimized for social media.

This smartphone features a compact design that fits in small purses and tiny pockets when folded. Compared to the Z Flip3, the flatter design looks and feels fantastic, and the unmatched Bespoke Edition options make this phone ideal for those who want a unique device.

The camera setup isn’t something to write home about, but the quality of photos and videos doesn’t disappoint. In typical Samsung fashion, they are full of details and bright, saturated colors. While not necessarily true to life, they’re eye-catchy and ready to share online — no post-processing required.

Like the Z Fold4, the Flip4 model is powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. This CPU brings enough power for hard-core tasks, including graphically demanding games or image editing apps. The only thing we don’t like is the 3,700 mAh dual-cell battery that doesn’t deliver enough power for a full day of use.

The Galaxy Z Flip4 comes in four standard colors: Graphite, Blue, Bora Purple, and Pink Gold. The 128GB and 512GB editions aren’t customizable, but the 256GB Unlocked also comes in Bespoke Edition styles.

ProsCons
The Z Flip4 captures vibrant, eye-catchy photos and videos ready to post on social media.Samsung equips this phone with a 3,700 mAh battery that doesn’t last a full day.
Despite its small size, the smartphone packs enough power for gaming and other demanding tasks.
The phone is offered in four standard colors and Bespoke Edition styles.

Sleek and rugged at the same time, the Galaxy XCover6 Pro is the best Samsung phone for everyone looking for a sturdy smartphone.

What makes it unique is the military-grade design and outstanding connectivity with other products in the Galaxy ecosystem, including the Galaxy Watch and the Galaxy Buds. Beyond military strength tested against specific environmental conditions, such as temperature, shock, and dust, this phone is waterproof and boasts an IP68 rating.

A particularly nice touch is the removable battery — something rare to see on new phones. Its 4,050 mAh capacity provides sufficient power for a full day of use, and when it drains, you can swap it with a charged one. We also like the camera setup and the adventure-optimized camera app. The Single Take function, for instance, shoots photos and videos with all the cameras when you hold down the shutter, and then the software pulls the best ones in an album. In this way, you can make sure to capture all wow-worthy moments.

Other highlights include customizable hotkeys for quick shortcuts and 128GB of internal storage that is expandable up to 1TB. However, the finish isn’t as high-end as other Samsung phones, and the camera capabilities are less than stellar in low light.

ProsCons
The Galaxy XCover6 Pro is one of the few Samsung phones with a removable battery. The camera setup is not as high-end as the setups found on other Samsung phones.
While this phone only comes with 128GB of internal storage, the memory is expandable up to 1TB.
It resists temperature changes, shocks, water, and dust and is suitable for heavy-duty use.

Part of the Galaxy’s midrange lineup, the A54 5G is the best choice if you don’t want to spend too much money.

However, affordability doesn’t mean a (too great) compromise in features. Released on March 24, 2023, the latest Galaxy A smartphone impresses with a design inspired by the S line. In fact, there are a few differences between the A24 and the S23 from a visual standpoint.

As far as performance goes, similarities include a high-capacity (5,000 mAh) battery that delivers excellent stamina and a 50MP main rear camera with optical stabilization. The main difference is the CPU; the Galaxy A54 5G is powered by a Samsung house-made Exynos 1380 chipset rather than the top-tier Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

You won’t get the high-end metal frame either, but the glass panels on the front and back give it a sleek feel. Other positives include expandable storage of up to 1TB and a 6.4-inch display almost as big as the S23 Plus.

The Galaxy A54 5G is offered in three colors: Awesome Lime, Awesome Graphite, and Awesome Violet. The 128GB of internal storage is generally enough for most users to get by.

ProsCons
The sleek design resembles the high-end Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus.A slower processor limits the phone’s performance.
The A54 5G comes with 128GB of internal storage, expandable up to 1TB.
A high-capacity battery provides enough stamina for a full day of use.

How to Pick the Best Samsung Phone: Step-by-Step

When choosing a Samsung phone, there are five main considerations for most buyers.

  • Design
  • Performance
  • Camera
  • Battery
  • Price

Let’s see how each of these factors can impact your decision-making.

Design

Samsung manufactures some of the sleekest smartphones, but there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The current flagship, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, impresses with a sleek design. However, the device is massive and incompatible with smaller pockets. Similarly, the Z Fold4 is perfect for productivity but heavy and thick when folded. An alternative to the Z Fold4 is the Z Flip4, which is fashionable, light, and folds to a compact size. The Galaxy S23, S23 Plus, and the A54 5G are other sleek phones that fit in most pockets and won’t weigh you down. Regardless of your choice, most Samsung phones come in a selection of trendy colors. For selected devices, the Bespoke Edition option allows you to mix and match the hinge and glass panel colors for a custom finish.

Performance

You can find two processor types in Samsung phones, Snapdragon and Exynos. The former equips high-end flagships, including devices in the S and Z lines. Midrange options typically come with proprietary Exynos CPUs that power most features but can’t support graphically demanding games and other resource-avid apps. While top-tier processors make the phones more desirable, they also increase the device’s price.

Camera

If Samsung phones are known for something, it’s the superb camera setups. However, not all phones come with high-end cameras. The brand’s S lineup sports the best cameras ever seen on Samsung phones, but the Z Flip4 also impresses with the quality of its pictures and videos. If you don’t mind a midrange camera setup, the Galaxy A54 5G and the XCover6 Pro can save you a few bucks.

Battery

Another deciding factor is the battery. Most Samsung phones feature built-in, non-removable batteries. It is easy to understand that the bigger the capacity, the longer the battery life. However, the hardware can affect stamina. For instance, the Galaxy S23 Ultra has a better battery life than the Galaxy A54 5G, despite its larger size and more demanding apps. This is all thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU that improves battery life compared to the A54’s Exynos. If you’re dead set on removable batteries, your only option is the Galaxy XCover6 Pro.

Price

At the low end of the range, the Galaxy A54 5G and the XCover6 Pro deliver satisfactory performance on a pocket-friendly budget. Top-of-the-line options like the Galaxy S23 Ultra and the Z Fold4 feature outstanding performance but are expensive. However, the S23 Ultra is more affordable and a better choice than the Z Fold4 if you want the best performance for your money.

What to Know Before Buying a Samsung Phone

Before you buy a Samsung phone, consider its release date and when the next model in its class is expected to come out. The company offers four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and five years of security patches. When buying an older model, you can expect it to stop receiving upgrades after a shorter time than a new release, which ultimately means you’ll have to upgrade your smartphone more often.

However, this doesn’t mean you must buy the phone right after its release. Samsung typically cuts off prices a few months after the release as it prepares to launch the new smartphone generation. This is the best time to buy a new device. You can also save by trading in your old phone or opting for a smartphone deal from your favorite carrier.

Using a Samsung Phone: What It’s Like

Generally, all Samsung phones offer a fluid user experience. The Android-based interface is super-easy to navigate, and using apps and functions is as intuitive as possible. On flagships such as the S23 Ultra or its predecessors in the S line, the Edge Panel keeps all your favorite apps easily accessible. At the same time, the S Pen can improve versatility and productivity on compatible devices.

Compatibility with all other devices within the Galaxy ecosystem and native apps such as Samsung Health, Samsung TV, and Samsung Wallet boost fun and convenience. Transferring data from an old Android device to a new Samsung phone is as easy as it gets, while the Good Lock app allows for seamless customization. However, to get the most out of your smartphone, you should choose a Samsung phone that suits your needs and demands.
