What Is Sling TV?

You may be surprised to know that Sling TV was the first over-the-top (OTT) streaming service ever launched. Put simply, an OTT service is one that delivers content solely over the internet instead of via traditional methods such as satellite or cable TV. If you were around when streaming was in its infancy, you can probably remember how inconsistent and borderline unwatchable it was. More time was spent buffering than actually watching anything.

As such, Sling TV was DISH Network’s answer to this problem, pioneering a streaming experience centered around live content that could be customized to each subscriber’s preferences. Today, Sling TV boasts a huge selection of channels. From Comedy Central, Discovery, and TLC to the Disney Channel, Food Network, and E!, there’s something for everyone on Sling TV.

Today, there are two membership plans available that you can use to begin building your tailored subscription: Sling Orange and Sling Blue. Both plans come with their own exclusive channels but can be combined to get the best of both worlds. What’s more, extra channels can be added on as you see fit to get the streaming service of your dreams. Often, this type of customized service can work out cheaper than an all-encompassing cable TV package.

How Can I Watch Sling TV On a Samsung Smart TV?

While Sling TV isn’t available through Samsung TV Plus, if your TV has smart functionality, there is another way. First things first, you’ll need to be a Sling subscriber. You can do so by signing up for one of their TV plans through their website. Currently, they’re offering 50% off on your first month, but after that, the basic plans are $40/month and $45/month for Sling Orange and Sling Blue, respectively. Check out their video tutorial below to see how simple signup can be.

If your Samsung TV model is more recent than November 2016, then the Sling TV app should be available to you and come pre-loaded. All you need to do is press the Home button on your remote and navigate to the “My Apps” section in the Apps menu. From here, click the Sling TV app and begin watching.

However, you may find that the app isn’t already installed. In this case, you can search for “Sling TV” in the Apps menu and download and install. Either way, you’ll need your login details to gain access. You can then customize your app by adding the shows you love to the homepage.

How to Screen Cast Sling TV to Samsung TV

You should be able to watch Sling TV with the previous method. However, some users report that the picture quality can be inconsistent when watching directly through their Samsung TV. If you’d prefer to try casting Sling TV from another device, read on to find out how.

Using a Samsung Phone

The simplest way to cast the Sling TV app to your Samsung TV is if you have a Samsung smartphone. See the steps below to do this.

Step 1: Open Sling TV and the Quick Panel

First, open up the Sling TV app and select the show you want to watch. Then, swipe up on your device to access the Quick Panel.

Step 2: Select TV From Smart View

In the Quick Panel, you should see the Smart View option. Tap this, and then select your Samsung TV from the list. You may have to enter your PIN, and both devices need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. When prompted to begin casting, hit confirm, and you should now see your show on the TV.

Using an iPhone

Of course, many of us have an iPhone and not a Samsung phone. Not to worry, you can use the AirPlay functionality to achieve the same goal.

Step 1: Enable AirPlay On Your TV

To begin, press the Settings button on your Samsung remote to go to the settings menu. Then, turn on Apple AirPlay from within Apple AirPlay Settings under the General tab.

Step 2: Open Sling and Cast

As before, open the show you want to watch on your smartphone, and then tap the AirPlay logo. Select your TV, and enter the displayed code when prompted.
