- You can use a smartphone as an LG TV remote for LG smart TVs running webOS 3.5 and later.
- You can turn on an LG TV without a remote by pressing the power button on the TV or using the LG ThinQ app.
It feels like TV manufacturers are intentionally making remotes harder to find these days. From the tiny pill-shaped Roku remote that comes with the streaming boxes to the paper-thin Apple TV remote practically designed to disappear between couch cushions, we’re truly fighting a losing battle here. TV remotes are no different. And, of all the TV brands out there, LG TV remotes seem to be some of the most difficult to find. If you’ve lost yours, fear not: You can still turn on an LG TV without a remote. Here’s how it’s done.
Can You Use a Smartphone as an LG TV Remote?
If you or someone you know has a smart TV with Roku’s operating system built into it, then you probably already know that these televisions allow you to navigate around with the Roku app. This includes powering the television on from the app, as well. Is such a thing possible with an LG TV?
The short answer is yes, you can use a smartphone as an LG TV remote. Only in some cases, however. More specifically, only LG smart TVs running webOS 3.5 and later can be powered on or turned off with your phone. We’ll dive further into these instructions and exact specifications below.
Ways to Turn on an LG TV Without a Remote
Before you go and buy a brand new LG TV remote to replace your missing one, try out a couple of these methods below. There are two key ways you can still power on and power off your LG TV without a remote. Try them both out before deciding to give up the search and shell out for a replacement.
Option One: Press the Power Button on the TV
Your first option is also the easiest (though it does require getting up and going over to the TV, which is sometimes easier said than done). You can simply press the power button on the LG TV to turn it on. This button is typically found underneath the LG logo on the bottom edge of the television.
If you can’t find it there, don’t fret. LG occasionally places the power button on the back of the TV instead. With these models, the power button is located closer to the connectivity hub. (Think of your HDMI and USB ports.) If it’s not underneath the LG logo on the bottom, then it’ll be in the back.
Option Two: Use the LG ThinQ App
If you’d rather not get up and press a button every time you want to turn your TV on or off, we certainly wouldn’t blame you. If you have an LG TV equipped with webOS 3.5 or later, then it’s probably compatible with the LG ThinQ app.
This app is available for both iOS and Android users alike. Go to your device’s app store, download the LG ThinQ app from LG Electronics, and wait for it to download. Then, open the app and select a product to add. Hit “TVs” and wait for your device to show up.
If it’s not appearing, then your TV may not be connected to Wi-Fi. Alternatively, your television might not be running the latest webOS. In these instances, you’re better off either powering on and off with the power button or purchasing a replacement remote outright.
