Toyota bZ4X vs. Hyundai Ioniq 5: What’s the Difference?
Debuted in 2021 as the bZ4X Concept and released a year later, Toyota bZ4X is an all-electric SUV that promises a smooth transition from a gas or hybrid to a battery-powered vehicle. The Japanese brand developed a new electric platform for this car, which it shares with the unofficial twin Subaru Solterra. However, while Solterra comes in AWD variants alone, Toyota offers the bZ4X in FWD and AWD trims. Sadly, this is not enough to make this car a winner.
Real-world highway testing reveals a limited range and top speed. You’ll have to take longer breaks while waiting for the battery to recharge. Paired with a relatively high price tag, these factors put the bZ4X at the back of the non-luxury EV pack.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 impresses with its retro-modern styling and new-era electrification. It is undeniably more capable than Toyota, which could be a surprise for those used to comparing the gas or hybrid models from these brands. This vehicle comes with a wider range of trims and prices. However, the charge speed puts it in the league of luxury EVs, such as the Lucid Air or the Porsche Taycan.
These features give the Ioniq 5 an edge over Toyota bZ4X, but are they enough? This detailed comparison should help you decide.
Whether you’re a hot-shoe driver or need max torque to tackle difficult grounds, Hyundai Ioniq 5 wins this round. The Korean make is available in various trims, either rear or all-wheel drive. Power varies from 168 horses in the SE Standard Range, only offered as an RWD, to 320 horses in all AWD variants. Torque can go up to 446 lb.-ft., which makes the Ioniq 5 punchy enough to handle most situations.
Toyota offers its bZ4X in FWD and AWD variants. The former is more powerful than Hyundai’s entry-level Ioniq 5 but weaker than the RWD Ioniq 5 Limited, SEL, or SE. As expected, the AWD bZ4X has a more powerful drivetrain, but the difference is disappointing. It only goes from 201 to 214 horsepower.
Such a weak motor can’t compete with the Ioniq 5. The top speed is only 99.4 miles per hour (Ioniq 5 can race at 115mph). Acceleration is also slower; the AWD bZ4X Limited goes from zero to 60 miles per hour in 6.4 seconds, whereas the Ioniq 5 only needs 5.2 seconds.
Despite these differences, however, some folks might prefer Toyota. This EV’s main advantage is the front-wheel drive on the single-motor trims. While not as powerful as rear-wheel drive, FWD cars are easier to handle, perform better on slippery terrains, and are overall safer. Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a better choice for aspiring racers.
Battery and Range
From an objective standpoint, the Ioniq 5 wins the performance round. However, that’s not its only victory. This SUV also wins in terms of battery specs and range.
In its standard version, the Ioniq 5 has a 58.0kWh battery pack that provides up to 266 miles per charge. The electric range goes up to 303 miles per charge in the higher-end trims with 77.4kWh batteries. Fuel economy goes up to 132MPGe combined, more than you can expect from other electric cars.
Another feature that Hyundai’s got for itself is fast charging. The larger battery can go from 10 to 80 percent in about 18 minutes when charged at a fast-charging station, and you can lounge on the reclining front seats while you’re waiting.
Toyota’s bZ4X might be promising, but its electric range and fuel economy are disappointing. You can find a 63.4kWh battery in the single-motor version and 65.5kWh in the dual-motor one. These batteries deliver a range between 222 and 252 miles on paper, but the electric range is much shorter in real life.
The fuel economy is also subpar compared to other EVs. While the automaker claims up to 107MPGe on the highway, the car only returns about 86MPGe. Charging takes up to an hour at a fast-charging station or about nine hours with a Level 2 supply.
Toyota bZ4X and Hyundai Ioniq 5 are two compact SUVs. While both are similar in size, the former is longer, whereas the latter is wider. Apart from these differences, each comes with pros and cons.
The bZ4X’s main advantage is the higher ground clearance. You get 8.1 inches between the underside of the car and the terrain, a factor that makes the AWD variants ideal for adventures. Hyundai Ioniq 5 has a ground clearance of 6.1 inches, which is excellent for an SUV but not as great as Toyota.
Exterior differences are also visible in the style. The bZ4X brags with aggressive lines and a more futuristic look. Hyundai Ioniq 5 is more old-school, with a retro-inspired design. We can’t say one is better than the other, as it all comes down to preference. However, Hyundai offers a taller roof and more headroom for rear passengers.
Beyond exterior design, what folks look for in a car is comfort. As SUVs, both the bZ4X and the Ioniq 5 are spacious, but there are some differences.
Toyota boasts a large, airy cabin with a flat floor at the back. This translates into more legroom for the rear passengers. There is also sufficient headroom for adults to sit comfortably on the rear seats, even though not as much as Ioniq 5 offers.
The bZ4X’s front seats are divided by a fixed center console. Spacious open storage underneath the console makes it easy to keep essentials accessible. However, the lack of a glovebox reduces the overall storage space inside the cabin.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 may look retro on the outside, but its interior is as modern as it gets. An innovative feature is the sliding central console that turns the front area into a lounging space. The magnetic dashboard is another highlight; it has two infotainment screens and can hold your beloved keepsakes. This car also features reclining front seats and delivers plenty of space at the rear for two adults or three kids to sit comfortably.
The two SUVs are similar in terms of cargo space. Both vehicles offer around 27 cubic feet of space with the rear seats unfolded. Both cars can haul large items or over 20 carry-on suitcases with the seats folded.
A significant difference between Toyota bZ4X and the Ioniq 5 is the infotainment system. Both automakers equip their systems with proprietary software. They are intuitive and compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, Hyundai is much more minimalist and technological.
Its magnetic dash features two 12-inch touchscreens. One is the regular infotainment system that allows you to control the audio and media, non-essential car functions, and connectivity. The other is a digital gauge cluster that displays essential car information. The sliding central console has no buttons, although the retro-looking panel under the central display provides quick access to various functions, including navigation and AC.
Toyota’s system is pretty well-connected and comes with a cloud-based navigation system. It also features wireless smartphone charging and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot. However, the infotainment system is more cluttered. In addition to the 12.3-inch touchscreen, this car features plenty of buttons on the console. The digital gauge cluster is smartly positioned at eye level, but at 7.0 inches, it is smaller than Ioniq 5.
Today’s vehicles are as safe as possible, and both Toyota and Hyundai equip their models with advanced features. The former has automated emergency braking and pedestrian detection as standard on all trims. You can also expect lane departure warning and lane-keep assistance, cameras and a sensor for safe parking, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, to name just a few.
Panoramic view monitoring comes as standard on the high-end trim only, and sadly, it isn’t available on the entry model, not even as an option. An additional feature, included as standard on the AWD variants, is the X-MODE that increases safety when driving over rugged terrain.
Hyundai also includes most safety features as standard on all Ioniq 5 trims. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t come with blind-spot or surround-view monitors on any trim except for the Limited. It comes with forward collision avoidance, intelligent speed limit assistance, and Level II autonomous driving as standard on the SEL and Limited trims. Both bZ4X trims only feature Level I adaptive cruise control.
Toyota bZ4X and Hyundai Ioniq 5 are two fully electric SUVs, but the similarities end here. While both brands enjoy an excellent reputation, Toyota isn’t exactly famous for its EVs. Unsurprisingly, the bZ4X has some flaws, including a poor electric range and slow charging.
Shockingly, though, the bZ4X is more expensive than the Ioniq 5. The entry-level model starts at an MRSP of $42,000, $650 more than the Ioniq 5. The bZ4X Limited can set you back $46,700 if you settle for the base model. Optional features and add-ons can drive the price up.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 has an MRSP of $41,450, which can go up to $52,600 for the Limited. However, considering you can choose from four trims and that the Ioniq 5 Limited features many more innovative features than Toyota, it is well worth the money.

The bZ4X is Toyota’s first original EV. It is a good car, but its performance isn’t comparable to the Ioniq 5. Hyundai’s model is superior to the bZ4X in almost every way. It delivers more electric range, a better fuel economy, and charges much faster at public stations and homes. Comfort is also superior, and the cargo space is slightly smaller than Toyota’s.
The bZ4X offers a higher ground clearance and additional safety features. However, these factors alone might not justify the higher price. While Toyota’s EV SUV is a solid contender, the Ioniq 5 is a more exciting ride.
