The Top 7 Electric Convertible Cars We Have Our Eyes On

In 2004, Tesla released its first vehicle, the Tesla Roadster. It had a range of 244 miles on a single charge and could go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. It wasn’t just like any other car; it was fast, quick, and most importantly, fuel-efficient.

Tesla’s success launched the wide-scale acceptance of electric vehicles, and every manufacturer set out to release their own. By 2020, most auto companies had a model.

Now that the base is set, it’s time to see some flourish. If you’re looking to feel the wind in your hair, here are the top seven electric convertible cars we’re looking forward to.

1. Tesla Roadster (Second Generation)

No brand is more synonymous with electric vehicles than Tesla. Since 2003, the company has owned the market. While Elon Musk is constantly revealing new projects, his revamp of the original Tesla Roadster has us the most excited.

Tesla announced the new model with a challenge to all other automakers: this is the quickest car in the world. Seeing as it’s capable of 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, it’s got our eyes open.

While the vehicle was revealed in 2017, its launch date remains unknown. We can expect the electric car company to release its convertible model sometime in 2023 at a starting price of about $200,000.

2. Bentley EXP 12 Speed 6e

Along the road, electric vehicles became luxury by default. No other company has taken this to heart like Bentley. In 2017, the company revealed its EXP 12 Speed 6e, a concept for the luxury automaker’s first fully electric vehicle.

Bentley expects the vehicle to have phenomenal torque and a range that will reach from London to Paris. The luxury car company keeps its sleek design at the forefront of its electric convertible car. Its trademark haunch is included, and they’ve integrated modern features such as rearview cameras and a dynamic, LED front grille. Look out for the EXP 12 Speed 6e along with its partner vehicle, the EXP 100 GT, in the coming years.

3. MG Cyberster

Possibly the most anticipated electric convertible car of the year, the British auto company MG debuted its Cyberster late last year. Known for designing sports cars at value prices, MG takes its design to the next level (in more ways than one).

While you shouldn’t expect the Cyberster to outpace the Roadster, the all-electric car is capable of a range of about 500 miles. The most eye-catching feature, however, is the vehicle’s design. MG equipped the Cyberster with a gaming-inspired interior, featuring a controller for a steering wheel and three monitors set up as a display. Start getting excited about this car; MG is planning to release the Cyberster for about $50,000.

4. Fiat 500e Cabrio

Those that are more eco-concerned that still want to put the top down on a sunny day will love the Fiat 500e. This electric convertible car doesn’t boast speed or power or even range but instead focuses on functionality and size. Its fantastic maneuverability makes it the most popular electric vehicle (EV) in Italy.

The 500e features a small 42kWh battery with a range of about 185 miles on a single charge (which is just short of EPA conditions in the US). However, this introduces our favorite feature of the EV, its regenerative braking. Used most often in cities, the 500e uses the braking mechanism to charge the battery, extending its range up to an extra 267 miles. This fits a lot of capability in such a small vehicle.

While it’s not available in the U.S. yet, you can find it for under $40,000.

5. Mini Convertible EV

While Fiat currently owns the small car segment of EVs, it can expect competition from Mini by 2025. One of the most popular cruising cars in the world, the Mini sells nearly 20% of its vehicles as convertibles. With this in mind, BMW announced its electric convertible option early last year.

The Mini brand is known for its quick, punchy cruisers. Owners can expect the electric mini to feature the same zippiness as their electric models. And, unlike Fiat, Mini plans to have the vehicle available in the US upon launch. Look for the Mini convertible EV priced at about $40,000.

6. GMC Hummer EV Pickup

One of our favorite eclectic convertible cars in 2022 isn’t a car at all. GMC took its designs for an electric Hummer to another level, creating a vehicle with removable roof panels, like a Jeep. The result is an awesome blend of modern, power, and class.

The Hummer EV comes with a truck bed and a “frunk” area to store the roof panels. While it resembles the beefy older Hummers, this one has some get-up-and-go; GMC claims the vehicle can go from 0-60 in just three seconds. The first edition is sold out, but the EV3X currently has a price of about $110,000.

7. Chevrolet Corvette Electric

There is still a lot of fog around the all-electric Chevlerot Corvette; while the company gave the green light for its design earlier this year, they provided no details. What we’re sure of, however, is that if an electric Corvette is coming, so is a convertible version.

According to a report from Autocar in the Spring of 2022, the Chevrolet Corvette is one of the best-selling convertibles to date. The auto company revealed that nearly 50% of its Corvette sales were convertible models. With numbers that high, it only makes sense that this electric convertible car is coming with a fabric top.

What to Know Before Buying an Electric Convertible Car

While we’re still at the advent of the electric convertible car boom, there are a few things you can start to look into before buying one.

While specs such as acceleration and range are important, not all cars are made the same. Electric motors and internal-combustion engines use completely different sciences, and not just any company can make theirs top of the line.

Before you decide on an electric convertible car, consider the manufacturer. Companies such as Tesla and many Japanese companies have a history of working with electric models. Other companies, such as Chevrolet or GMC, didn’t consider electric models until the last few years. It’s logical to expect higher quality electric motors from manufacturers that have worked with them longer.

A key indicator that the company is still developing its technology is based on its release date. Companies like Fiat and Nissan already have electric vehicles on the road. Other companies, such as Bentley, likely won’t release their design until they can implement the electric motor into their luxury brand.

More on Electric Cars

The market for electric vehicles is booming. With cars that have the potential to save big on gas prices without sacrificing drivability, it’s no wonder everyone is looking for them.

Electric Vehicles in the News

Electric Vehicles (EVs) continue to make headlines in 2023. With more automakers releasing new EVs and governments around the world offering incentives to promote EV adoption, it looks like EVs will be commonplace in the near future.

Some of the incentives countries are offering include tax breaks and rebates. These incentives help make EVs more affordable and, thus, more attractive to consumers.
