However, with so many Disney Pops out there, it can be hard to pick which ones to put on your shelf. Here are some of the coolest Disney Funko Pops to brighten your shelf, just in case you need a little magic in your house.

We’re going to start off with the man himself. None of this would exist without Walt Disney and his dream. Most people who know anything about Walt know that he loved trains. In fact, Disneyland itself was partially created so that Walt would have a place for his model train. Walt once visited a model train expo in Chicago with his friend and Imagineer Ward Kimble. The two friends witnessed many things there. Among them was a scaled-down but rideable train. The railroad went around the whole convention. It even made stops at model Western and turn-of-the-century towns. Sound familiar?

If it weren’t for Walt’s love of locomotives, the world may have never known the joy and magic that Disney parks have brought into so many of our lives. With this Funko Pop, you can remember Walt at his happiest. Imagine him in his model train, enjoying the Grand Circle Tour of his original Magic Kingdom. How could that thought do anything but brighten things up?

From one icon to another, we have a Funko Pop with Mickey Mouse in quite possibly his most iconic look. This version of Micky first debuted in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” sequence of the classic 1940 film Fantasia. Born from a conversation between Walt and British symphonic conductor Leopold Stokowski, Fantasia pairs Disney animation with classical music to tell stories without dialogue (well, mostly). Walt had something of a chip on his shoulder once he became successful. Despite how much he advanced the art form, much of the world still saw animation as something low-brow, a novelty to entertain children. On the other side of the spectrum, Stokowski was lamenting the fact that classical music was largely inaccessible to the masses. Average people saw it as dull, pretentious, and difficult to enjoy.

Disney and Stokowski had the idea for Fantasia: an artistic animation film set to iconic pieces of classical music. Walt figured it would validate animation and help people see it as a legitimate art form. Stokowski thought that seeing the music set to animation would help average people appreciate and understand the evocative nature of classical music. Unfortunately, the film fell flat with audiences at the time, and both the unfair stereotypes they were fighting against remain to this day.

On the brighter side, Fantasia became a beloved classic over time, earning artistic legitimacy, and even being named one of AFI’s top 100 films of all time. As for the public, it made classical pieces like Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Moutain, Beethoven’s The Pastoral Symphony, and, of course, Paul Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice pop culture, making them recognizable to average people worldwide. Celebrate the film that flawlessly combines art and entertainment by snagging this Mickey Pop.

For its 100th anniversary, the Walt Disney Company released a lot of keepsakes and exclusive merchandise. We also go a line of Funko Pops that celebrate the history of the company. Perhaps the most iconic type of Disney character is the fairy tale princess. For the 100th we got a whole line of princess Pops featuring everyone from Aurora to Elsa, to Mirabel (okay, technically not a princess, but just as magical). However, our favorite is probably Tiana. Not only was she the heroine in the last feature film to be done in the classic Disney 2-D animation style, but she is also an inspiration to people everywhere.

There’s something about the character of Tiana that speaks to us all. For perhaps the first time in its history, Disney animation introduced us to a princess that was a pragmatic dreamer. She wasn’t content to simply wish upon a star, she knew that it takes hard work and sacrifice to make a dream come true. Fortunately for all of us, Tiana will soon be able to inspire theme park guests when the Splash Mountain attractions in Disneyland and Walt Disney World are both rethemed to make Tiana the central character.

Whether Mickey Mouse’s most iconic look is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, or this one, is up for debate. Yet there is no question that this little Funko Pop honors the version of Mickey that made him a household name and gave the Disney Brothers enough capital to make all their dreams come true. Debuting in 1928, Steamboat Willie was loosely based on the Buster Keaton film Steamboat Bill Jr., which in turn was loosely based on the popular song Steamboat Bill. If you think you haven’t heard Steamboat Bill, odds are you have. It’s the song that Mickey whistles in the cartoon (which has become a part of the opening credits of every Disney Animation Studios film).

Sync Sound Animation

Said whistling is important for two reasons: first, it is a subtle nod to Buster Keaton and the song he paid tribute to, but second and most importantly, it introduced the world to sync-sound animation. A lot of people think that Steamboat Willy was significant because it was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon, but that isn’t exactly the case. The first Mickey Mouse cartoon was actually Plane Crazy, which failed to pick up a distributor. After seeing “The Jazz Singer,” the first successful talkie, Walt and his lead animator Ub Iwerks committed to bringing sync-sound to animation.

Back in the silent era, cartoons and films technically had sound, it just usually came in the form of music and sound effects created by the staff of the theater where the film was shown. Finally, in the late 20s, technology allowed for an audio recording to be synced in time to film and the rest was history. Not only did Walt and Ub pioneer this technology on the animation front, but they also perfected it. Steamboat Willy became the Walt Disney company’s first megahit, and Mickey Mouse became a household name all over the world.

The film Saving Mr. Banks tells the story of P.L. Travers and her feud with Walt Disney leading up to the classic film Mary Poppins. While the film’s historical accuracy may be questionable, the writers cleverly addressed this within the narrative by essentially making the film’s thesis: “The facts about events are not as important as the way we feel when we remember them.”

The heart of the film stays true enough to the story of how Mary Poppins was made. In that story, Travers is on the brink of financial ruin and in desperation sells the rights to her hit children’s book to Walt Disney, whose daughters happen to love Mary. Travers has two conditions: no songs, and no animation. Thankfully for the art of cinema and audiences everywhere, she withdrew both. As a result, we got a classic musical score by the Sherman Brothers. We also got one of the most iconic sequences in film history. The Jolly Holiday sequence in Mary Poppins, of course. That whimsical moment is now immortalized in Funko Pop form with not just Mary, but Bert as well.

There have been many successes within the history of the Walt Disney Company, but some are truly special. Disney historians will probably tell you that there were six major milestone hits in the company’s history. Basically, six projects were born in a make-or-break moment for the company. Steamboat Willie, The Three Little Pigs, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Disneyland, and The Little Mermaid were those projects.

At this time in the company’s history, a lot of the original animators were retiring and a new batch had yet to find their voice. Mermaid was drawn in a bunch of trailers. The animators had lost their building to another division that the company deemed more profitable. If The Little Mermaid had been a flop, it was very likely that Disney Animation would be a thing of the past. Luckily, this movie was a giant critical and commercial success, beloved by audiences to this day. With this piece, Funko has immortalized the VHS cover. Which is the way that many of us first saw this movie.

We are showing a lot of Disney Funko Pops that will figuratively brighten up your shelf. Let’s move to one that will literally brighten things up. Not only is Dr. Facilier a cool enough character to be worthy of a place in your collection, but this brightly-colored version was also specifically made with a black light in mind. Now the iconic “Friends on the Otherside” sequence can be faithfully displayed in your home. That entire scene has gorgeous animation with a sickly, otherworldly glow. However, if you got the Tiana we recommended earlier and you think Princess and the Frog is overrepresented, you can snag another iconic Disney villain. Fan favorites like Ursula, Oogie Boogie, or our favorite Mad Madam Mim in her purple dragon form, are also solid choices.

Some casual Disney fans may not be familiar with this character. That’s because, for the longest time, he wasn’t owned by the Walt Disney Company. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was Walt’s first successful featured character, predating Mickey Mouse. In a bit of a contract flimflam, Universal Pictures (yes, that Universal) swindled Walt Disney out of his rights to the character. When he went on to create Mickey, Walt swore he would never lease him to another production house for fear of losing the rights. Walt produced the first two Mickey cartoons independently and failed to find a distributor. Then, they created Steamboat Willie and the rest was history. As for poor Oswald, his cartoons ran their course and the character went largely unused by Universal for about 70 years.

The epilogue came in 2010 when NBC (now owned by Universal) wanted to obtain sportscaster Al Michaels for their Sunday Night Football broadcast. Al was already under contract with ABC, owned by Disney. The Disney Company agreed to release Al from his contract in exchange for the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Universal agreed and finally, this poor forgotten rabbit got a Disney ending. Now he has become a cult favorite among Disney fans, appearing in the 2010 video game “Epic Mickey” and making regular appearances at Disney’s California Adventure.

Plane Crazy’s only claim to fame was as the first Mickey Mouse cartoon ever produced. Most are satisfied to chalk it up as a footnote in Disney history and move on. However, the story behind this little short really should be told more often because it’s…well, plain crazy. After the fiasco with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt decided to leave Universal to start his own company. He asked his fellow animators to join him and with a steady paycheck hanging in the balance, all of them turned their backs on Walt and stayed at Universal. All except Ub Iwerks, that is.

Energized by the prospect of a new beginning filled with independence, and armed with the secret weapon of Mickey Mouse, Walt and Ub set out to make their first cartoon: “Plane Crazy.” The only problem was that they were on the hook to produce their final Oswald cartoons for Universal. Walt oversaw the last of his Oswald cartoons and locked Ub in a private office, telling no one what he was working on. Ub animated the entirety of Plane Crazy by himself in about 2 weeks. Locked in a room alone, he churned out just a little over 700 drawings per day!

In the end, Walt and Ub couldn’t find a distributor. They were at their lowest, all their sacrifices and Ub’s hard work had been for nothing. However then, they pivoted to sync sound. Steamboat Wille was the hit of the decade and Plane Crazy found new life by having sync sound added to it as well. Ub and Walt defied the odds by working hard, innovating, and dreaming: three traits that would come to define Walt Disney’s legacy.

We end here with the icon that has come to represent not just the Disney company, but also the idea of Disney magic, worldwide. When Walt built Disneyland, he and the Imagineers designed an idyllic Main Street that looked up to a castle on the horizon. A land of enchantment that awaited all those who ventured towards it. In a way, that says it all. Our dreams are waiting for us if we have only the courage to pursue them. Just like Walt and the various heroes in his company’s stories, we may run into hardships. Yet sometimes, if we believe and innovate, plus work hard, our dreams could all come true. That’s why this castle is such a powerful symbol, and that’s why it deserves a spot on your shelf. So that every time you look at it, you can remember to believe in yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you think Walt would approve of this level of merchandising?

We’ll never know, but Walt had few qualms about merchandising when he was alive. After the fiasco with Oswald, Walt would do pretty much anything he could to stay financially independent. He hired his brother Roy to be the money man, and the two brothers licensed Mickey Mouse for just about every conceivable type of merchandise under the sun. The iconic Mickey Mouse watch wasn’t a movie trope born out of thin air, you know? They actually existed and were absolutely everywhere.

Are Disney Funko Pops a good investment?

Like any investment, they typically only pay off if you are serious and put in the work (not to mention plenty of money that you will hopefully see a return on). If you are looking at it from a purely financial standpoint, there are probably safer investments in which to make money. Funko Pops, like all Disney Memorabilia, are hit-and-miss. Their value is just as likely to flatline as skyrocket, and then of course there’s storage to consider. Honestly, the best reason to collect Disney Funko Pops is if you love them

Why no Star Wars or Marvel Pops on this list?

While owned by the Walt Disney Company, and often featured alongside Disney products, the Marvel, Star Wars, and even Pixar IPs have been branded separately by the company. If you go to Disney Plus, each has its own separate page. Disney is a company, but also a brand. We tried to stick to Pops that fit the Disney brand and omit ones that merely fell under the Walt Disney Company umbrella.
