For years, television speakers have been considered good enough by many. But, for anyone looking for a better sound experience, soundbars have grown massively in popularity. The advent of Dolby Atmos has raised expectations even higher for what a soundbar can do, and for good reason.

Any soundbar with Dolby Atmos will add a rich audio experience without requiring four or five extra pieces of stereo equipment scattered around a room. This is one of the major reasons streaming services call out Dolby Atmos as part of their content selection.

So, if you want to know which Dolby Atmos soundbars will give your TV the best audio makeover, we’ve tested dozens of options over the past few weeks and narrowed them down to our favorites:

Sonos Arc - The Premium Smart Soundbar for TV, Movies, Music, Gaming, and More - Black
  • All-new Sonos Arc - Bring all your entertainment to life with the brilliantly realistic sound of Arc, featuring Dolby Atmos. Enjoy control with your TV remote, voice, the Sonos app, Apple AirPlay 2, and more
  • 3D sound with Dolby Atmos - Experience shows, movies, and games with the precise and immersive sound of Dolby Atmos
  • Tuned to perfection - Enhanced Trueplay tuning technology optimizes the sound for the unique acoustics of the room
  • Immerse yourself in the music - Stream music, radio, podcasts, and more from your favorite services with the Sonos app or Apple AirPlay 2 when the TV is off
  • Class 10 for Full HD video recording and playback (Full HD (1920x1080) video support may vary based upon host device, file attributes, and other factors.)

Determining the best overall Dolby Atmos soundbar today is no easy task, as competition in the space is tough. Ultimately, the Sonos Arc manages to distinguish itself as the perfect combination of excellent sound and price.

Sonos considers the Arc its “most immersive home theater experience,” and that’s very true. Regardless of your room size, the Sonos Arc will fill it with plenty of sharp highs, detailed mids, and strong lows with music. It’s just as good for movies and TV shows with crisp and clear dialogue.

The one catch is that you need a newer TV from 2019 or later to really enjoy the best of what the Sonos Arc has to offer. That includes Apple AirPlay 2 and controlling all of the soundbar’s functions directly from the Sonos app on iOS and Android.

At 45” long, the Sonos is small enough to fit under TVs 50” and above. Setting the Sonos Arc up, regardless of your TV size, is super easy. Plug two cables into the soundbar and TV and you’re done!

Among the five front-facing speaker arrays hidden within the Sonos Beam, two are dedicated solely to overhead and surround sounds. It’s a virtual delivery of surround sound to be certain, but you will hardly be the wiser.

VIZIO Elevate Sound Bar for TV, Home Theater Surround Sound System for TV with Subwoofer and Bluetooth, P514a-H6 5.1.4
  • 18 high-performance speakers Unrivaled home theater performance.
  • Adaptive Height Speakers Automatically rotate to optimize your audio experience.
  • Dolby Atmos and DTS:X: Cinematic sound around and above.
  • 4 Upfiring Speakers Reflects enveloping sound overhead off your ceiling.

One of the most innovative Dolby Atmos soundbars available today, the Vizio Elevate adds a feature no other soundbar offers as of yet.

This 5.1.4 soundbar system uses a motorized driver to switch between Dolby Atmos and ‘normal’ sound on the fly. The speaker rotates to determine which is the best sound to deliver between the forward position, which is great for music, or Dolby Atmos, which excels at cinematic sound.

Even without the cool technology gimmick, the Vizio Elevate just sounds good. There are 18 total speakers between the soundbar, dual wireless speakers, and a wireless subwoofer. When paired with Dolby Atmos content, you’ll have an audio experience that quite literally bounces off the walls.

With two HDMI inputs, HDMI eARC, and Chromecast streaming over Wi-Fi, the Vizio is also future-proof. It’s ideally paired with Vizio TVs but it works just as well with any mainstream television brand.

How to Pick the Best Dolby Atmos Soundbar

If you didn’t know any better, all of the Dolby Atmos ready soundbars both on this list and off all look the same. Long black speakers that mount or sit in front of a television. Because of that, there are four main considerations buyers should be aware of before making any purchase.

  • Price
  • Sound Quality
  • Features
  • Compatibility

Let’s take a closer look at each of these.

Price

Dolby Atmos soundbars are not, by any means, inexpensive, as they range from $500 to $2,000+, making them a true investment. Realistically, most buyers looking for strong value should be closer to the $800-$1,000 range even if that’s not at all considered ‘budget.’ The good news is that for the price, most of these soundbars should perform for years, so you are not replacing them frequently at all.

That said, the more you spend, the more you get in terms of cinematic sound quality. If you want a good value, the Vizio M-Series is a solid compromise between price and features. On the other hand, the Sonos Arc is twice as much but adds more features and more immersive sounds.

Sound Quality

When you’re looking for a Dolby Atmos soundbar, it’s likely because you want room-filling sound that feels cinematic. Rest assured that every option on this list will offer at least that and more. However, there is no doubt that the sound quality will differ from product to product. The Sonos Arc is likely to be your favorite for sound as it’s the crispest of the top choices.

Sennheiser offers outstanding sound but at a premium cost which will probably make you look at the Sonos more closely. You also want to consider if you’re just buying a soundbar or getting additional speakers and a subwoofer, as is the case with the Vizio M-Series M512a-H6

Features

The most important feature of any Dolby Atmos soundbar is undoubtedly Dolby Atmos but, beyond that, you can consider things like Wi-Fi connectivity, how many HDMI ports it has, optical support, and more. The majority of this list offers most of those features, but if you’re looking to save a little and you don’t mind not having Wi-Fi, the Vizio M-Series M512a-H6 is a great choice and you can save a little as well.

Alternatively, with the Sony HT-A7000, you get 8K and 4K at 120Hz which makes it future-proofed, plus it is fantastic for gaming. The best path is to decide what features you cannot live without and then choose which soundbar is right for you.

Compatibility

Before you make any purchase for a Dolby Atmos soundbar, make sure your TV is compatible with HDMI, ARC, or optical input. Fortunately, every modern TV released in the last few years should have at least one of these options. Optical inputs are popular but, for the best sound, ARC is the best input.

Using A Dolby Atmos Soundbar: What’s It Like

We’ve been testing each of these soundbars over the last three weeks and that’s been good news for us. Everyone in the house has loved seeing these hooked up, blasting movies, and playing Xbox at sounds they are way too loud for everyday use.

With main TVs that have ARC compatibility, we’ve come away impressed across the board. The Sonos Arc was definitely our favorite combination of sound, setup, and for regular use. The Sennheiser was equally so, but it’s pricey. If you want the most premium Dolby Atmos soundbar on the market, it’s a must-have. But, if you want to spend less, the sound difference between it and the Sonos Arc will be negligible to non-audiophiles.

Our other biggest test was how well these soundbars handled Wi-Fi connectivity. How far away could we still stream music without signal degradation? Sonos and both Sony models really outperformed in this space, giving us the ability to move across our entire home without losing any sound quality.

Final Thoughts

Even with strong competition, the Sonos Arc remains the best Dolby Atmos soundbar you can buy today. Its combination of price, its excellent mobile app, features, and sound all make it a must-own for both audiophiles and anyone who just wants a cinema-like experience at home.

The 8 Best Dolby Atmos Soundbars Today FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is the best Dolby Atmos Soundbar?

The Sonos Arc is the best Dolby Atmos soundbar you can buy today. It’s going to look good in any room, under any television, and offers the best combination of price and features.

What is Dolby Atmos?

First developed in 2012, Dolby Atmos is a surround-sound technology that immerses an audience in what is, essentially, a dome of sound that makes you feel like you’re in a movie theater surrounded by speakers.

Do you want a soundbar or complete sound system?

There is little debate that a full surround sound system will outperform a sound bar. However, a soundbar is also much more visually pleasing and doesn’t take up as much space as a full set of speakers, subwoofer, etc. For most people, a soundbar is more than good enough and both are far better than the default speakers on a television.

Do you need to spend a lot on a soundbar?

This is definitely a subjective question but, realistically, the more you spend, the more you get. However, there is a price point, likely around $1,000 where the sound difference becomes negligible enough to non-audiophiles to not justify a higher price point.

Does size matter with a soundbar?

In some ways, yes, and, in other ways, no. The answer really depends on how just much sound you really want. There are 25-inch soundbars that sound fantastic and 45-inch soundbars that sound terrible. What matters more is the quality of the speakers inside and directional pointing (upward firing, toward walls, etc.)—not just size.
