The 7 Best Roku TVs You Can Buy Today

Key Points

  • Contrary to popular belief, Roku is not a TV manufacturer.
  • What they do is contract with other TV manufacturers to provide all the software required.
  • The TVs have all the features and is made without compromising quality in any way.
  • Out of all the Roku TVs that were tested TLC seems to have the best to offer at a reasonable price.

In a world where every new television to hit the market is a “smart TV,” there are plenty of manufacturers competing for your dollar. Among the many different interfaces available, Roku has consistently stood out for its clean look and deep library of streaming apps.

Calling a TV a Roku TV is a bit of a misnomer that’s worth getting out of the way. Roku doesn’t actually manufacture the television. Instead, they provide all of the software that powers your Roku-based smart interface.

Fortunately, there are a number of television manufacturers that have jumped on the Roku train with huge success like TCL and Hisense. Not only are they more affordable televisions but they are doing so without compromising features.

After weeks of trying out many different Roku TVs, we’ve created a list of the best Roku TVs that you can buy today.

For the last few years running, TCL's 6-Series Roku televisions have been widely considered the best value in smart TVs. Between premium picture quality and the Roku interface, there is a good reason the TCL 6-Series wins plenty of praise year after year.

Starting with its mini-LED QLED screen, the TCL offers outstanding brightness and contrast all while making the screen visible to anyone watching at an angle. The 4K picture is a major standout for the price and that’s true for both SDR and HDR content. A 120Hz refresh rate will also please gamers looking for a great place to hook up their favorite consoles.

Along with picture quality support by Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG support sound plays a big role with 6 Series. Dolby Atmos is one of the most premium audio experiences on a television regardless of price, and it’s built right into the 6-Series. And with THX certification for gaming included as well, every game is just a little more fun to play.

The Roku remote is another highlight with voice search so you can do things like ask Netflix to start by saying, “start Netflix,” or, “find movies with Sylvester Stallone.”

Of course, you can’t ignore the Roku interface which feels zippy on the 6-Series no matter if you are using the 55, 65, or 75-inch models.

If you’re not super concerned about screen size, you cannot go wrong with the TCL 3-Series Roku television. Available with a 40-inch screen (32 and 49-inch screens also available), you still get all of the Roku features you want at a rock-bottom price.

Screen quality caps out at 1080p which is likely the biggest downside, but, for buyers looking for a $200 price tag, 1080p is more than good enough. Color and contrast are very solid for the price with detailed blacks and whites combined with strong brightness for viewing in both dark and lit rooms.

Dual-band Wi-Fi with 802.11ac promises to keep your streaming signal strong and, if you don’t want to stream, 3 HDMI 2.0 ports enable support for a DVD player, video game console, etc.

Voice control through Roku’s downloadable app on Android or iOS syncs with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant to help launch any of the over 500,000 movies and TV episodes available through Roku’s interface.

Best for Gaming: Hisense U6GR

Good for your budget and great for gaming are two excellent ways to describe the Hisense U6GR Roku television

This TV is packed with strong gaming features like VRR support and fantastically low input lag. The only downside is that it only offers a 60GHz refresh with HDMI 2.1 but, aside from that, it’s exceptional for gaming. So long as you are not gaming competitively, this is one of the best sub $600 Roku televisions for gaming.

Gaming aside, the Hisense U6GR offers great 4K Ultra HD screen quality with strong colors, brightness, and contrast. Both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos bring cinema-like sound to your home for games, movies, television shows, and even Roku’s dedicated music channels.

Voice control is included on the remote but the Hisense also supports Siri, Alex, and Google Assistant.

Should you need a TV that handles dark rooms really well or even limited lighting, the Hisense high native contrast ratio will easily impress.

Sitting somewhere just above the best budget category but not quite a premium model, TCL 4-Series television offers incredible value. Available in sizes ranging from 43 to 85 inches, this may well be Roku’s best-selling television.

Undoubtedly one of the best bargains on the market, the 4-Series Roku TV adds 4K picture quality but at a price that’s substantially less than many competing models from Sony and Samsung. Regardless of the price tag, the TCL 4-Series delivers with great color accuracy, thanks to HDR10 technology that includes improved contrast over previous generation models.

As a Roku television, you can personalize the home screen to suit your needs and install any of your favorite streaming apps even if you never follow through on your promise to sit and binge Cobra Kai all in one sitting.

And, for a television that isn’t focused on gaming, a 14-millisecond input lag adds more than enough confidence that the TCL 4-Series can handle everyday gaming.

Price aside, the biggest downside of the TCL 6-Series 8K is that most movie and TV programming is not yet available in 8K. It might be a few years before it’s a common standard but you’re definitely futureproofed.

Sitting squarely in the middle between TCL 4 and 6-Series models, the TCL 5-Series is the best of both worlds. Moderately priced with a feature set that rivals its older brother, the 5-Series is a great choice for movie viewing.

The 4K Ultra HD picture quality combines with the detail of Dolby Vision HDR for a picture that’s truly lifelike. QLED technology adds more than a billion colors for excellent accuracy, which matches the formatting used by many cinema screens.

Input lag measures 13.1 seconds, so it’s an equally strong gaming TV as it is for movie viewing. That it’s less than half the price at $600 for a 65” model only confirms that this is one of TCL’s best Roku televisions.

Voice control will help you quickly find your movie of choice as it will with any of the apps available through the Roku marketplace.

If you can sacrifice features like HDMI 2.1 or VRR for gaming, the TCL 5-Series is a great choice that won’t break the bank.

What To Know Before Buying The Best Roku TV

Before making any purchase of a Roku TV, you need to first start and make sure that Roku TVs are right for you. Even as Roku continues to own close to 50% of the connected TV market in North America, there are alternatives out there to consider.

Roku on tv streaming with remote
With now so many Roku-capable devices to choose from, you should know the features that are most important to you.

Competitors

Apple TV is a strong competitor and while it’s more of a standalone unit to connect to any smart TV via USB-A, it offers an interface that is even more enjoyable to use than the Roku alternative. Not to mention how well the Apple TV works with other Apple devices, like being able to use your iPhone as a remote control.

The same goes for Google TV and, while it is only now seeing a surge in availability, it too offers a really strong interface and equally big app lineup.

The third biggest competitor to Roku is Amazon’s Fire TV, which offers an equally inexpensive set of TV options with a dedicated Fire TV interface. The quality of the televisions themselves is arguably below that of TCL quality but, like Google TV, Fire TV offers a huge selection of streaming apps for downloading as well.

Ultimately, Roku offers the best combination of the best picture quality TV sets along with its huge library of apps and 500,000+ movies and TV shows.

Price

The only other major consideration between any of the 7 best Roku TVs you can buy today is price. Between this list, we have prices that start as low as $200 and go as high as $2,000. That’s a pretty big window, so you need to decide just how important certain features are for you.

Do you want the best 4K quality? Then the TCL 6-Series is squarely in the middle of those two price points and is widely considered one of the best TV values on the market today.

If you want something that will offer strong 4K quality for years to come without compromising on picture quality or price, the TCL 4-Series is a great selection that starts at less than half the price of the 6-Series.

No matter which Roku TV you select, you’re going to get a great television, it’s just a matter of how great.

Using The 7 Best Roku TVs You Can Buy Today

We tested each Roku TV over the course of a few weeks and in different rooms of the house. That helped provide us with not just a look at picture quality but also picture quality in different lighting conditions.

What we found is that for the most part, all of these TVs performed as expected. As someone who already owns at least one model from the TCLs 4, 5, and 6-series lineup, expectations were right on track. There is little question that among Roku TV manufacturers out there, TCL offers the best combination of picture quality and features.

Hisense makes a great TV but as they have pivoted from Roku to Google TV, it’s beginning to show a larger gap between them and TCL. Their TVs are still great for the money, but it’s clear that TCL is advancing its feature set well beyond that of available Hisense models.

At the end of the day, the TCL 6-Series was our absolute favorite TV and it remains a staple of my home. The TCL 4-Series is absolutely one of the best non-premium TV models you can buy today and that’s especially true when it goes on sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Roku TV?

What are the benefits of a Roku TV?

Roku’s interface is the best in the smart TV business with its easy to navigate interface. Adding new apps is just a click or two away, as are most of the features you might ever need, like AirPlay 2 or changing audio inputs. Not to mention a selection of more than 500,000 movies and TV apps available.

Who else makes a Roku TV?

Along with TCL and Hisense, there are a few other notable manufacturers of Roku televisions like Westinghouse, Element, and Walmart’s in-house “Onn” brand.

What apps are available on Roku TVs?

There is a good chance that if you can think of it, it’s available as an app on Roku TV. Everything from favorites like Disney+, Prime Video and Paramount+ to ABC, ESPN, CNN and local news stations are all prominent apps available on Roku TVs.

Should I get an external media streaming device like Amazon Fire or Apple TV?

This is a very subjective question. For the most part, it’s hard to imagine what another streaming media device could offer that Roku doesn’t. However, Apple TV adds gaming as a capability, so that’s one big reason to include it as part of a Roku TV setup. The same for Google TV where it too offers a library of gaming titles available to play on a big screen.
