Facebook Messenger is one of the most popular messaging apps available today. But before becoming a Facebook Messenger guru, you’ll need to learn about all the icons and symbols. Fortunately, we’re here to teach them to you!
There are many symbols and icons on the Facebook Messenger desktop and mobile apps. Some icons add more function, and some of the symbols just make the app more fun! If you want to learn all of the features and functions of Facebook Messenger, hang out with us for a bit while we review each one!
Symbols & Icons on Facebook Messenger – Desktop
We use Facebook Messenger for all sorts of things. For example, if you use a PC or a Mac, you can install the Messenger app on your desktop and send/receive messages without picking up your phone. If you want to use Facebook Messenger on your desktop, you must know what all the icons and symbols do.
For our readers who want to learn about the desktop version of Facebook Messenger, read through this section:
1. The Chat Icon
We’ll start with the left-side menu and work our way to the right. When you open the Messenger app on your desktop, you’ll see a Chat icon in the top left corner. That’s where you can see the chats that matter most: the ones with your friends and family.
Click the Chat icon to access conversations with your friends or create new ones (that’s option number 5 below).
2. The Marketplace Icon
Below the Chat icon, you’ll see a little storefront symbol. This symbol represents your Facebook Market chats. This is where you’ll want to be if you’re selling or buying something. Click the Marketplace icon to access all of your buying and selling conversations.
3. The Message Request Chat Icon
Next up is the Message Request icon. While this may appear similar to the chat icon, it’s a little different. Facebook Messenger won’t let just anyone send your messages, so this icon symbolizes chats that might be spam.
If someone who isn’t your friend on Facebook messages you, the conversations will appear here.
4. Archive Icon
The last icon on the left menu is the Archive icon. If you want to save conversations and revisit them later, you can add them to the Facebook Messenger chat archive. Whenever you want to go back and view them, click this icon.
5. The Pen & Pad Icon
Now, let’s say you want to create a new message thread or group message. The Pen & Pad icon near the top (above your contacts) is how you do that. Click the icon and input the name of the Facebook user you want to message.
6. The Attachments Symbol
Let’s move to the conversations panel. Click on a conversation, and we’ll work left to right again.
The first icon you’ll see is down by the chat bar. It looks like a + symbol, and it’s your attachment icon. Click this to add pictures and videos to send on Facebook Messenger.
7. The Stickers Symbol
You’ll see a few more icons on the right side of the chat bar. First, the Sticker icon is where to get all the cool stickers, GIFs, and photos. Select this icon to get more exciting and funny things to liven up your chat.
8. The Emoji Symbol
Another symbol you’ll see to the right of the chat bar is the Emoji symbol. Unlike the mobile version of Facebook Messenger, you may not have the emoji button on your keyboard. This is the reason Facebook’s developers added it to the platform.
Click the emoji icon to add emojis to your chat on Facebook Messenger.
Calling, Search, & Menu
Finally, a few icons are in the far top right corner of the conversation panel. The first two icons allow you to call your friends. The second one even lets you video call your friends.
The third icon, which looks like a magnifying glass, lets you search the conversation for keywords.
Finally, the three-dot icon allows you to access that contact’s menu. You can block them, change the theme, and access all shared media here.
Symbols & Icons on Facebook Messenger – iOS & Android
Social media has been around for decades, but it got so much better when we got mobile versions of our favorite sites. If you aren’t using a desktop to talk to your friends, you probably use the Facebook Messenger mobile app for iOS or Android. Each icon performs a task or makes Facebook Messenger more fun. Fortunately, all icons are similar on Android and iOS, except one.
If you’re using the mobile app, review this section to learn more about the symbols and icons on Facebook Messenger:
1. The Menu Icon
You’ll see several icons and symbols when you launch Facebook Messenger on your iPhone or iPad. We’ll work through these icons from top to bottom in this section. The first icon is in the upper left corner and looks like three lines. This is your menu icon.
If you tap the menu icon, you’ll see your chats, marketplace chats, message requests, communities, and more.
2. The New Chat Icon
Next, the top right corner has the pen & paper icon. This is the icon that lets you create new conversations. Tap it and input the names of your friends and family you’d like to talk to. You can also make group chats by tapping this icon.
3. The Chats Icon
Now, we’ll look at the icons and symbols at the bottom of the Facebook Messenger app. The first icon in the bottom left corner is the Chat icon. Tap this to see a list of all your conversations.
4. The Calls Icon
The second icon at the bottom of the page is the Call icon. Tap it to access Facebook Messenger calling.
Note: There are also calling options inside the conversation. We’ll discuss that further below.
5. Your Contacts
The People icon is the third Facebook Messenger icon at the bottom of the app. You’ll find a list of friends and people you can contact here.
6. The Stories Icon
Finally, you’ll see the Stories icon on the right. If any of your friends have posted Stories, you can see those here.
7. The + Icon
Now that you know the icons and symbols on the main page of the Facebook Messenger app, we’ll teach you about the ones in the conversations.
Working from the bottom left to the right, the first icon is a + sign. This symbol allows you to send money, share your location, or play games.
8. The Camera
You can take pictures in the Facebook Messenger app and send them in your conversations. The camera symbol lets you do that! Tap the symbol and snap a photo. Then, tap Send.
Note: If this button doesn’t work initially, you may need to allow camera access in your device’s settings.
9. Your Photos
Do you already have a photo in your device’s camera roll and want to share it? Assuming Facebook Messenger has permission to access your photos, tap the Photo icon. Select the image you want to send and tap Send.
10. The Voice Record Icon
The microphone icon lets you send voice recordings in Facebook Messenger. Tap this icon and record something. You can send it to your friends or family when you’re ready.
11. The Sticker Icon
The Sticker icon is how you can make your Facebook Messenger conversations a little more fun. You can add stickers or GIFs, create an avatar, and more. If your friend needs a little cheering up, push this button. Send them something sweet or funny to add some pizzazz to your chats.
12. The Calling Icons
Finally, you have the calling icons. These are pretty self-explanatory, but you can voice call or video chat your Facebook Messenger contacts. Open the conversation and tap one of these icons.
The i Icon – Android Only
In the top right corner of each conversation, you’ll see an i icon on the Android version of Facebook Messenger. Tap this icon to access the chat sub-menu. Here, you can change themes, view pinned messages, add nicknames, block users, and more. You can even see shared media files like pictures and videos in this menu.
The Profile Icon – iOS Only
If you’re an iOS user and want to access the conversation sub-menu, you won’t see an icon or a symbol. Instead, you must tap on the user’s profile picture. When you do, you’ll see a list of options from themes to blocking and media files.
Choose any of these options to find pictures or tweak the chat settings quickly.
