Sony WH-1000XM5 Vs. Jabra Evolve2 75 What’s the Difference?

If you’re either looking for headphones or looking to upgrade the version you have now, you’re probably on the hunt for headphones that offer the best features at the best price. You also want to choose a pair that works for everything you need them to do.

Because you don’t spend your entire life at work, you’ll also want to find headphones that work outside of the office. Let’s look closer at the Sony WH-1000XM5 and the Jabra Evolve2 75 to determine which is best for you and your specific needs. 

Design

Sony’s WH-1000XM5 headphones are the most significant departure from previous designs, the most apparent difference from past designs being the departure from a foldable construction to a sleeker, slimmer design.

In addition, because the Sony headphones can no longer fold into themselves, they aren’t quite as portable as past designs. However, with ample padding around the ears, the ability for the cups to swivel, and a smoother headband extension, the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones make for a super-comfortable choice for long-term wear.

With a set of these, you can easily block out a noisy office – at home or with coworkers, as well as background noise while you’re commuting or working out at the gym.

However, if you are looking for workout headphones, it’s important to note that the Sony WH-1000XM5 design is not waterproof, and if you’re known to work up a sweat, it may cause an issue. 

Speak to Chat is a feature that comes into play in work situations. As the name suggests, Speak to Chat will kick in once you start talking. The Sony WH will stop playback, and revert to ambient sound, allowing you to have conversations at your workstation without removing them.

A drawback to this will be if you’re one to talk to yourself. Luckily, the Speak to Chat feature can be toggled off if you find your ramblings are constantly interrupting your playback. 

Jabra stands out with its ability to speak to Siri, Google Assistant, or Amazon Alexa using the Voice button. Speaking of Google, perhaps the best feature (if you’re an Android user) of the Jabra Evolve2 is the Google Fast Pair feature, which allows Bluetooth fast pairing simply by placing your headphones near your android device. No button pushing is required. 

If you tend to multitask, it’s great to know that either headphone can connect to two devices simultaneously, allowing you to play music on your phone and take calls on your computer. However, the Jabra Evolve2 75 lacks audio jacks, making it either a Bluetooth or USB device. While this can limit your choices, it’s still not a make-or-break deal in today’s wireless world.

In addition, the Evolve2 included the Jabra Direct tool, which will help you manage firmware upgrades when needed. Finally, whether you use iOS or Android, Jabra has the Sound+ application, which lets you customize the headphones to your hearts’ content. Similarly, Sony offers the Headphones Connect app, which also allows listening customization. 

Compatibility

When considering headphones, knowing how they will integrate with your software setup and how your new headphones will work with various apps and tools is essential. The good news is both options work well with office setups. 

The Sony WH-1000XM5 and Jabra Evolve2 75 headphones can be used with various applications, including Mac and PC, USB, Smartphones, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Webex. While both are compatible with pretty much anything you’d need for your home or work office, it’s important to note that the WH-1000XM5 is reported to have such high latency that they aren’t the best choice for online gaming, for example.

It stands to reason that the Xm5 version of Sony’s WH headphones is still a great choice for headphone use but a poor choice for a headset. 

Sound and Noise Cancelation

Jabra has made strides in improving the Evolve2 with eight independent sensors that process sound from the boom and speaker housings. This processing of the eight sensors makes the background noise canceling-or ANC, so effective, seeing as how it can easily differentiate between background noise and, say, your coworker trying to get your attention. 

That being said, not much can beat the noise-canceling power of the Sony WH series. We’ve already mentioned some WH-1000XM5 noise canceling in the Features section. However, to get into specifics, the M5s come with four microphones focused only on picking up your voice.

In addition, WH-1000XM5 headphones keep out higher and mid-frequency sounds than previous models. With the new Auto NC Optimizer, the noise canceling feature can learn your environment and adjust accordingly. 

Charge Time and Battery Life

Sony headphone battery life depends on whether or not you have the noise canceling activated. In fact, not activating the noise canceling feature can save around 10 hours of battery life, making it about a 40-hour battery life.

However, you can get three hours of use after just a three-minute charge. So, if you forget to pop these on the charger, they can still be useable for your next meeting or listening to your favorite podcast episode reasonably quickly. 

When it comes to Jabra’s Evolve2, the headset takes just under 3 hours to reach maximum battery life. But you can get around 6 hours of use after just 15 minutes on the charger. In addition, you can use the included USB charger to charge the headset while in use.

The latest firmware update for the Sony WH-1000XM5 was released on May 24, 2023. This update included improvements to noise cancellation, wearing detection, and general performance.

Similarly, on March 8, 2023, Jabra released updates to the Jabra Evolve2 75, including improvements to noise cancellation, Bluetooth connectivity, and overall performance.

Looking Ahead to 2024

Sony and Jabra have not announced plans to update the Sony WH-1000XM5 or Jabra Evolve2 75 respectively for 2024. It is, however, possible that the companies will release new models in the second half of the year.
