The SEC Network is a sports network oriented towards college sports. As the name might indicate, it focuses entirely on the Southeastern Conference of college sports.
Origins
The SEC Network was originally announced in 2013. ESPN entered a long-term exclusive contract with the SEC, which is expected to last until 2034. As such, there was a need for a dedicated network for sports covered in one of the most competitive conferences in the United States.
The SEC Network officially launched in 2014, just in time for football season to get fully underway. Since its debut, the channel has gone on to be one of the largest and most subscribed networks for dedicated sports. The channel estimates that it reaches around 70 million households yearly.
Current Day
The SEC Network has grown into a juggernaut of collegiate sports. During the football season, you can expect to catch at least three football games every single Saturday. It still competes with CBS on airing games, with the terrestrial station getting the first pick. However, this is a massive change since there is no longer an exclusive broadcast of college football games through CBS alone.
