Samsung Z Flip 3 vs. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Which One Wins?

Foldable phones made their debut in the late 1990s. However, due to technological advancements and innovations, they disappeared for a while. Now they’re making a comeback almost two decades later. While the first foldable phone—the Motorola StarTac—had a screen and a keypad, the new generation of foldable smartphones are all screen and foldable. You can fold them in two directions: along the vertical axis into a book-like design or horizontally into a clamshell fold.

The Samsung Z Flip 3 folds into half its original size in the clamshell fold, while the Galaxy Z Fold 3 looks like your average smartphone at first glance but opens into a tablet. These two devices are worlds apart in terms of displays, cameras, batteries, or price. However, they also share some similarities. So, read on to find out which gives the other a run for their money.

Samsung Z Flip 3 vs. Samsung Galaxy Fold: What’s the Difference?

Price

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the more affordable choice of the two devices, starting at $999 for the basic 128 GB model and about $100 more for the 256 GB model. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 comes in at almost twice the price of the Z Flip 3 at $1,799 for the 256 GB version and $1,899 for the 512 GB.

Design and Display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a clamshell-style smartphone that folds in half to fit into small pockets, including your purse or skinniest jeans. It has a 6.7-inch, 2640 x 1080 AMOLED main display screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate similar to any regular smartphone. It folds into a compact size that boasts a 1.9-inch cover display screen that you can use to conveniently check notifications, and weather updates, take photos, or play music without unfolding it.

The Z Flip 3 is available in various colors, including Phantom Black, Green, Cream, and Lavender. You can also have yours exclusively customized in your favorite colors directly on the Samsung website.

Contrastingly, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the phone of the future that allows you unmatched convenience for work and play. It opens from a 6.2-inch cover screen with a 2268 x 832 resolution into a tablet stretching 7.6 inches. Both screens have a 120 Hz refresh rate. The screen is silky smooth with an under-display camera without a punch hole, which disappears when idle, so you can enjoy a clear and superior viewing experience.

The Fold 3 has a limited and conservative color selection, including only three colors: Phantom Black, Phantom Silver, and Phantom Green.

Camera

Unlike many smartphones today, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has only two rear 12MP cameras: an ultra-wide and a wide-angle lens that you can use to take selfies and preview them on the cover screen. On the main screen is a 10MP selfie camera. The Z Flip 3 also has a Flex mode that acts as a tripod, which allows you to take photos hands-free. Even better, the photographer and models can preview the images on the main and cover screens.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 has a triple-rear camera setup, including a 12 MP wide lens, a 12 MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12 MP telephoto lens. All these cameras have a 2x optical zoom and a 10x digital zoom. It also has two selfie cameras: a 10 MP up-front camera and a 4 MP under-display camera on the top-right corner, which is only useful for video calls.

Performance

The two Samsung foldable smartphones have the same Snapdragon 888 processor and OneUI software, so they boast similar performance. The Snapdragon 888 processor brings impressive response times and superior connectivity, so you can play top-tier games without lagging.

The Z Fold 3 has 12 GB of RAM, making it a superior multitasking device to the Z Flip 3, which has 8GB RAM. The Fold 3 is available in 256 GB or 512 GB of internal storage, while the basic Z Flip 3 has 128 GB of internal storage, but at $100 more, you can get a 256 GB version.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 allows you to run up to three apps on split screen mode simultaneously, like Zoom, Notepad, and Messenger. At the same time, you can have up to five other apps running in the background, maybe Netflix, Spotify, or the game you were playing before hopping on the Zoom call. It’s the king of multitasking, unlike Z Flip 3, which can only split your screen into two.

Battery Life

Once again, the Z Flip 3 lags because of its 3,300 mAh battery, smaller than the 4,4000 mAh dual battery in the Fold 3. This means the Fold 3 has a longer battery life, though it doesn’t match up to most other flagship smartphones, like the Google Pixel Fold’s 5,000 mAh battery.

You can quickly boost the juice on either device as they both support fast charging. The Z Flip 3’s fast charging maxes out at 15 W, while the Z Fold 3 can support up to 25 W. Unfortunately, neither the Z Flip 3 nor Fold 3  comes with a USB-C charger, so you’ll have to incur this additional expense. Both also support wireless charging at 10 W and reverse charging at 4.5 W.

Special Features

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 have numerous unique features that have helped them retain their position as best-seller. For starters, both phones support 5G connectivity, which provides higher speeds and lower latency. Both have Flex mode, but it operates differently on each device.

On the Z Flip 3, the Flex mode allows you to display content on top and control from the bottom half; this is most useful when using the camera app. Again, it works as a mini-tripod that lets you make video calls and take photos hands-free so that you can say goodbye to shaky pictures. The cover screen on the Z Flip 3 can also be categorized as a unique feature that allows you to take and preview photos, play music, check notifications, and interact with numerous widgets.

The flex mode on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 lets you work smarter, as you can take a call on the upper half and scribble ideas on the bottom half using the S pen, another unique feature of this device. The S Pen Fold Edition is a separate purchase that will cost you around $49.99 to $79.99 if you also want the flip cover to keep the pen secure. Unfortunately, the Z Fold 3 is incompatible with regular S pens, not even the ones you get with other Galaxy Note series phones or Samsung tablets.

Durability

Samsung didn’t compromise on the durability of either phone. Both have a solid but lightweight armor aluminum casing that’s 80% more durable than the preceding models, which sufficiently protects the interior parts like the hinges. The main screen on both devices is made using Samsung’s Ultra Thin Gorilla Victus Glass.

The foldable smartphones also have an IPX8 water resistance rating, which means they can survive water splashes, rain, and being submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for no more than 30 minutes. Unfortunately, dust and other small particles can still find their way into the hinge and under the display to cause havoc, as seen in Galaxy Flip 2 and Fold 2.
