Samsung S95B vs. LG B2: What’s the difference?

Display Technology

The televisions differ in light-emitting diode (LED) functionality. The S95B uses quantum dot technology, and the B2 utilizes a light filtering methodology.

S95B QD-OLED

Quantum dot technology separates blue light into different colors, so there’s more light to display on the S95B screen than on the LG-B2.

LG B2 OLED

White light is “mixed” through a series of color filters before it’s displayed. There’s less light to display on the screen than the S95B.

Samsung S95 B’s brightness value is 27% greater than LG B2. More brightness directly correlates to our ability to “see” the tv image in a brightly illuminated room. More is better. We’d select the S95B every day of the week.

Display Colors

The Samsung S95 displays 15% more of the available color spectrum than the LG B2. It’s most noticeable on HDL and UHD Blu-Ray content where the colors can “shine.” The quantum dot process is the reason there are more colors to display.

  • Insider tip: You must pick up a UHD Blu-ray player to take advantage of your new 4K television. Your old Blu-ray player will work, but you won’t have the benefit of enjoying 4K resolution!
    • 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray resolution = 3840 X 2160
    • Blu-ray resolution = 1920 X 1080

The S95B displays colors to display than the LG B2. More colors equate to a better image. The S95B is the better choice.

Resolution

One thing that both the S95B and LG B2 have in common is the television’s display resolution. Both televisions display a beautiful 4K image (3,840 X 2,160 pixels) at 120Hz.

  • The 95SB (unofficially) supports a 144Hz refresh rate when connected to a PC with an HDMI 2.1 output.

Image Processing

The two televisions are different when it comes to image processing. The S95B uses a Neural Quantum Processor 4K, and the LG B2 uses an a7 Gen 5 AI Processor. How does that impact the viewing quality?

S95B Processor

The Neural Quantum processor’s claim to fame resides in the ability to “upscale” images. Essentially, think of the process as an image pixel “boost.” If you’re watching 1080p content, it will (almost) seem like it’s 4K.

The processor “fills in” pixels on lower-resolution content (old DVDs, YouTube) matching your higher-resolution TV.

Samsungs flagship NEO QLED 8K product line uses the Neural Quantum Processor too. The processor isn’t just being used on the current platform, it’s being used on the next generation too!

B2 Processor

The a7 Gen 5 AI processor is a mid-range processor for mid-range televisions. The a7 utilizes a dual-step sharpness-enhancing algorithm to reduce motion blur and noise degradation. (LG uses a next-generation processor (a9) inside their 8K product lines, but doesn’t use that processor on the B2.)

The Neural Quantum process in the S95B delivers better image crispness and sharpness than the LG’s processor.

Screen Size

  • S95B has 55″ and 65″ models available today. The 77″ S95C model will be released later in 2023.
  • LG B2 has 55 “, 65″, and 77” models available today. There have been no announcements from LG about a larger television in the B2 series. Larger LG models are available.

Smart Platform

As should be expected, both platforms utilize smart platforms.

  • Bixby, Samsung’s voice assistant, is integrated into the S95B.
  • Alexa, LG’s voice assistant, is integrated into the B2.

The critical variation between the two smart platforms may be all about how intuitive the menus and applications are to you.  You may prefer an operating system based on past ownership of either brand.  (Sometimes, it’s easier to go with what you know, eh?)

If you’ve never owned an LG or Samsung smart TV, a trip to the store is in order.  Try the remotes out and see which smart platform you prefer.

Remote Control

Have you ever owned a TV and didn’t like it because of the remote control? We have! That’s why there’s a section about remote controls. The remote control is the last thing we think about when buying a new TV. The remote becomes one of the most important features once the TV is set up.

  • The S95B comes with a solar charging remote control. A solar panel charges the remote control from either overhead lights or exterior sunlight. Button reprogramming is locked.
  • The LG B2 remote control buttons are reprogrammable.
  • Neither television model has a microphone on the television to allow for actual hands-free operation.
  • Both remotes have a built-in microphone that allows you to search or navigate through your smart tv menus and applications.
  • User reviews skew slightly towards a preference for the LG B2 remote.

Inputs

Gamers should rejoice at seeing HMDI 2.1 inputs on the S95B and the LG B2. The 2.1 configuration is the most current version of the HDMI standard. Data transfer speed on HDMI 2.0 maxes out around 18Gbps. HDMI 2.1 transfers data closer to 48Gbps.

The Xbox Series X and PS5 both have HDMI 2.1 ports. Gamers will appreciate the faster transfer speed when running at 120 fps.

  • Insider tip: Don’t forget to purchase your HDMI 2.1 cables.

The lack of four HMDI 2.1 ports on the B2 is a BIG loss. As the market shifts to 4K devices, this will become downright painful as you start plugging and unplugging devices to connect them to the two HDMI 2.1 ports. The S95B is easily the winner when comparing HDMI ports.

Sound Quality

The performance differences are minor when examining the S95B vs. LG B2. Neither system will have you cheering at the pristine sound quality at higher volumes. Both televisions are acceptable for standard volume dialog.

The Samsung S95 has Dolby 7.1 and supports eARC. The LG B2 lacks eARC but does have standard ARC. eARC, in conjunction with HDMI 2.1, allows uncompressed audio between the TV and the soundbar.

The Samsung S95 has almost double the dynamic range compression compared to the LG B2. Crank up the bass and the volume, and you’ll notice the difference.

Consider a sound bar for an immersive entertainment experience. Why not have a state-of-the-art sound system if you own a state-of-the-art television?

Burn-in

Burn-in was more of a concern in the past and isn’t a huge issue these days.  If you have concerns, there are two different preventative routes to discuss.

Manufacturer-built-in protection

LG and Samsung developed hardware and software to minimize the risk of burn-in.

  • The S95B utilizes sub-pixel shifting after the image has been static for a predetermined period.
  • The LG B2 automatically moves the image after two minutes if the image hasn’t changed.
  • Both systems have automatic screen savers, logo dimming, and pixel shifting.

Home consumer protection

Three different methods you can take today to avoid burn-in.

  1. Turn on the screen saver option.
  2. Turn off the TV when you pause a game and walk away from the TV.
  3. Don’t stream a static image, like a Youtube Minecraft music channel, for days and weeks.

Price

The 55″ and 65″ models’ prices are essentially the same.  Given the equality in price, there’s no question that the Samsung S95B 65″ model is a great selection.

SizeSamsung S95BLG B2

65”$1,897$1899
77”$4,999*$2999

Hanging a 77″ screen on your wall is a commitment!  Dare we recommend that you measure (twice) and pay someone to hang it on the wall for you?

*Samsung’s S95C 77″ model is slated for release in 2023.  The price may decrease significantly when the product is widely available.
