6 Reasons Why I’m Buying a Toshiba Canvio Basics Portable Hard Drive

Key Points

  • The Toshiba Canvio Basics is a cheap no-frills portable hard drive with storage capacities of 1, 2, and 4TB.
  • One of the top reasons to consider buying a Toshiba Canvio Basics portable hard drive is its low cost, with a 4TB drive priced at $99 MSRP.
  • The hard drive comes with free phone support from Toshiba in the event of hardware failure.
  • The Toshiba Canvio Basics is great for smaller file transfers, with fast read/write speeds for handling multiple small files.
  • The hard drive comes out of the box with no errors reported and is compact in size, making it a convenient option for desktop use.

Why should you consider buying a Toshiba Canvio Basics portable hard drive? Storage is at an all-time low when looking at the raw cost of things. As such, you might want to add a little extra storage to your portable setup. Now, I wouldn’t use the Toshiba Canvio Basics as a means of rough-and-tumble storage to tote around in your bag. However, if you’re looking to add to your desktop area, it’s a great fit.

Extra storage is always a good thing, and that’s one of the guiding reasons why you should consider buying a Toshiba Canvio Basics portable hard drive. However, that isn’t the whole picture. Let’s take a deeper dive into Toshiba’s entry-level hard drive to see what really makes it a worthwhile purchase for any user.

The Toshiba Canvio Basics is a cheap no-frills portable hard drive. You’ve got storage capacities of 1, 2, and 4TB which come in a pair of configurations. Classic and contemporary stylings don’t have any bearing on the actual function of the hard drive. However, it does change up the appearance of the hard drive’s enclosure.

The enclosure itself isn’t anything to write home about. It does its intended job, which is all you really need if it lives on a desk. You can tote this around in a portable fashion, but I wouldn’t recommend it. This hard drive excels as a form of storage, not something more rugged that you’ll carry with you daily.

Reasons to Buy a Toshiba Canvio Basics Portable Hard Drive

Here are my six main reasons why you should consider buying a Toshiba Canvio Basics portable hard drive. The Toshiba Canvio Basics is a budget hard drive through and through, and the pricing certainly reflects it. It is a fantastic device when you temper your expectations accordingly.

The Low Cost

Buying a Toshiba Canvio
The Canvio Basics is one of the most affordable portable hard drives you’ll find.

One of the top reasons you should consider buying a Toshiba Canvio Basics portable hard drive comes down to its low cost. When you can get a 4TB portable hard drive for $99 MSRP, you’re doing great. This comes together with a slew of other great features. It does come pre-formatted for Windows usage, but formatting it for Macs takes a matter of minutes.

If you’re looking for a low-cost way of getting storage for a laptop with no means of upgrading its internal capacity, like a new MacBook for example, then it goes a long way. I use similar hard drives for my MacBook Air. The 256GB of storage on the base models of these laptops is fine for casual usage, but when you do a lot of creative or audio work, it disappears quickly.

Ample Storage

I touched upon the storage when going over the low cost. However, you’re getting up to 1 TB of storage at the bare minimum when you consider buying a Toshiba Canvio Basics portable hard drive. The ample storage might not be the fastest you’ll find. Read/write speeds are fine, but when transferring massive files it does suffer a bit.

However, I don’t find that to be a detracting point when considering a hard drive. Mechanical hard drives are slow under the best of conditions. Read/write speeds are fantastic for a 2.5-inch hard drive, with sequential speeds of 109MB/s when reading data. You’ve got an expected 106MB/s when writing data. This isn’t impressive, but it is solid when considering the size of the storage.

Free Phone Support

Buying a Toshiba Canvio
Toshiba’s customer service is second to none when it comes to dealing with your issues.

What is the best selling point for most computer hardware? You can tout feature sets and other facets, which is fine and dandy. However, one of the top reasons you should buy a Toshiba Canvio Basics portable hard drive comes down to customer service. Toshiba’s customer service is available when you have hardware failures, on the phone without any additional fees associated with it.

I’ve dealt with Toshiba plenty over the years. When you look at enterprise-grade storage, which used to be my bread-and-butter in the tech industry, Toshiba is a top contender. The quality of the storage is generally solid, ranking with the likes of Western Digital and Seagate. However, Toshiba’s support far exceeds the dealings I’ve had with Western Digital. They care about customers.

Great for Smaller Transfers

Another of the top reasons you should consider buying a Toshiba Canvio Basics portable hard drive is the read/write speeds. If you’re looking to slam out plenty of documents or images from your laptop, this will handle it with ease. Sequential read/write speeds are plenty fast when handling multiple small files.

You’ve got a USB 3.0 bus that reads from the hard drive’s interface. Now, this won’t reach the same sort of speeds or throughput as a portable SSD. However, it doesn’t need to. The storage itself is great for its intended purpose, which is providing extra capacity for a computer that might not have the means.

Disk Diagnostics Report No Errors

This might seem like a no-brainer when considering you’re purchasing a brand-new hard drive. However, I’ve lost track over the years of new storage purchases where I noted errors when reading the SMART data provided by a hard drive. I am pleased to say the Toshiba Canvio Basics comes out of the box with zero errors.

Now, how the storage holds up over a number of years is going to be a completely different matter. I can’t speak with any real authority on how daily use is going to affect the overall performance and lifespan of the drive. That said, it bodes well that it comes clean and pristine out of the packaging to be used for transfers and storage alike.

It Is Compact

I’ve got plenty of external hard drives which take up quite a bit of space on my desk. The overall size of the Canvio Basics is one of the largest selling points that you’ll find, however. This is a tiny hard drive, with the enclosure only adding a little extra width to proceedings when accounting for its overall footprint. This doesn’t impact performance in any way.

Now, the enclosure doesn’t have much in the way of shock protection. There is a sensor that can detect massive shocks or jostles to the device. However, if you’re looking for something that can support multiple drops in a row, you’ll want to look elsewhere. I see this as a permanent fixture on a desk that takes up minimal room. In that capacity, it works well.

Closing Thoughts

So, should you buy a Toshiba Canvio Basics hard drive? I think it is one of the best current values that you’ll find when considering portable storage. It might not have the same bells and whistles as something like a Samsung T7 portable SSD. However, it doesn’t need to, considering the cost. If you need extra storage at a low cost, the Toshiba Canvio Basics hard drive will fit the bill.
