I Looked at the Beats Flex, Here Is Why I Would Consider Buying a Pair

The Beats Flex headphones might not be the most notable headphone pair in Apple’s lineup, but they are one of the most interesting. Neckband headphones aren’t always the most popular style, but they are certainly the right choice for many people. What helps give the Beats Flex a boost is their price point.

Regularly available on Amazon, the Flex is an inexpensive option to integrate Apple’s W1 headphone chip into your life. With this chip, the Beats Flex headphones seamlessly integrate with your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Best of all, you can choose from one of four different colors. All you have to do is select the pair that best fits your personality.

With a few thoughts in mind, let’s go deeper into all the reasons I think the Beats Flex might be right for you.

What’s Special About the Beats Flex?

W1 Chip

If there is one aspect of the Beats Flex that makes it special, it’s the inclusion of Apple’s W1 chip. With this chip in the Flex headphones, you can power them on and hold them near any iPhone or iPad. You will automatically see a window pop up on your device screen letting you know you are connected. It’s about as seamless an experience as you can get.

While Bluetooth has never been that tedious, the use of the W1 chip with Apple products is just awesome. This is my professional opinion, mind you. Should you want to switch back and forth between Apple devices, iCloud syncing makes it super easy to do so. It’s super simple.

Fun Colors

As someone who loves fun colors in his Apple Watch bands and phone cases, the color option for the Beats Flex is a bonus. You have your choice of Beats Black, Flame Blue, Smoke Gray, and Yuzu Yellow. Each color is almost always available for the same $50 price point on Amazon, so you can rest assured you will have your choice when you are ready to pick up a pair. I would love to see Apple throw in a pair of Product Red Flex headphones to match its selection of phone cases. Wishful thinking for the future!

Battery Life

Since you don’t have an AirPod-like case to charge up your headphones on the go, strong battery life is an important consideration for Flex owners. To cover this concern, Apple and Beats have provided buyers with up to 12 hours of listening on a single charge. If you need a little extra juice on the go, a 10-minute Fast Fuel charge will give you an additional 1.5 hours of music playback. Admittedly this does put the Beats Flex somewhere in the middle of the battery group for neckband headphones, but it’s on the better side.

Very Comfortable

I readily admit to being someone who doesn’t love neckband headphones, but I can see why people do. Unlike ear cups that can quickly cause fatigue, you don’t have this issue with the neckband. Weighing only 18.6 grams, the 32-inch cord wraps around the backside of your neck and gets out of the way. I might be too sensitive to something touching the back of my neck, but again I can see why people like this design.

To be honest, I prefer the AirPod style myself, but I love the idea that a cable can make sure I don’t lose either earbud. I can’t tell you how many times I have lost my AirPod in my house. Thank goodness for Find My, otherwise, I’d probably be on the 6th or 7th pair. With the cable being connected to both earbuds, the Beats Flex always stays intact. If you ever lose your Beats Flex, they too are compatible with Apple Find My for easy discovery.

Additionally, you get four ear tip sizes with you for every color, so you can find the right fit. While the Beats Flex are not noise canceling, you will find some noise isolation once they are firmly in your ear.

Good Sound

Beats headphones have always been a bit controversial around their sound quality. It’s generally been people who think Flex headphones either sound really good or really bad. Well, I think most people are going to like the Beats Flex. By all accounts, they deliver good low to mid-range sound, which is to be expected from a Beats headphone. Low performance is Beats special, so expect a little more bass than you might get from another brand.

Beats claims that the optimized driver in each earbud provides a crisp sound. Combine this tech with an advanced digital processor and I think you should count on a better than good music listening experience. Whether you are listening while commuting, working, or working out, you should find yourself surprised by the sound quality of a $50 headphone.

Magnets For The Win

Building on the comfort discussion for the Beats Flex, built-in magnets help make sure they stay tight around your neck. Delivered with a satisfying click, each earbud magnetically attaches to the other. Unless you are not careful (like me), you should be able to comfortably keep the Beats Flex around your neck with ease.

Android Ready

If you have been wondering if the Beats Flex will work with Android devices, I’m proud to say it’s a resounding yes. While you lose the seamless sync with the W1 chip, you can still use Bluetooth pairing with any Android device. Once paired, the feature set between Apple and Android becomes equal. Everything from battery life to audio quality will be the same whether you are using Android or iOS.

Do the Beats Flex Actually Work?

Rest assured the Beats Flex does work and work well, but the sound quality is going to be up to each user. As I noted above, the bass-heavy sound delivered by the Beats Flex is a personal taste. For many music listeners, additional bass isn’t a bad thing.

Depending on your favorite music genre, it might even be a good thing. This said I can see where another percentage of users will find the Beats Flex delivers too much bass.

Bass and music aside, just about every other aspect of the Beats Flex works as promised. As someone who has used W1 chips previously, I have absolute confidence the seamless syncing experience Apple promises works as indicated. It’s one of the best things Apple has done in recent years. Sorry, Mac mini

A competitor to the Beats Flex, the Sennheiser CX 350BT is another popular pair of neckband headphones. Right off the bat, it’s worth noting the Sennheiser pair is almost double the price. What you get for the extra cost is voice assistant interaction beyond Siri. This means support for Google Assistant as well. A four-button remote is on the neckband and gives you an additional opportunity to change the volume or answer/end a phone call

On the other hand, the Beats Flex shines with battery life as you get an additional two hours. The CX 350BT only offers 10 hours of battery life, though it also offers support for fast charging. Battery life aside, Sennheiser justifies its price tag by including a Smart Control app where you can customize sound via an equalizer. Plus, you get a dedicated podcast mode to help increase audio quality.

Are the Beats Flex Headphones Worth It?

While they aren’t the most feature-rich in the neckband space, for the price, the Beats Flex headphones are worth it. If there is one area I would like to see improved, it’s an IPX rating for working out. You can use the Flex during a workout, but there is no stated protection against sweat or dust. It’s the one big thing I think is missing from the Flex. I sincerely hope Apple rectifies this in a future Flex release.

Outside of water resistance, you do get a pretty solid set of headphones for $50. When you consider battery life in the neckband space and W1 chip support, the Beats Flex is an easy sell for the price. Oh, before I forget, I also think the neckband remains a surefire way to prevent another lost pair of headphones.
