Roblox is more than a game. It’s many games rolled into one application. While it has a lot to offer, there are also plenty of reasons to avoid playing Roblox. Unfortunately, the games are far from perfect, and the app has plenty of problems.
Perhaps you’re here because you’re already playing Roblox and want to find reasons to quit, or your kids are begging for this popular app, and you’re unsure whether you should install it. The following sections include reasons why you should avoid it from the perspective of a parent and player.
Also, if you are a parent, you won’t have to worry about being the bad guy for long. We’ll also list some fantastic games that are leagues better than Roblox.
Reasons to Avoid Playing Roblox
Roblox is an app that has many games, and it’s wildly popular, especially among children. Unfortunately, the app can be unsafe for kids and a headache for everyone else. Before you get Roblox, read through our list of reasons to avoid it.
1. Scammers Ruin the Game
Roblox is one of those games where nefarious players are lurking in every corner. In all our years of playing, the app’s developers have yet to devise a tangible solution to stop scammers and hackers.
They’ve completely ruined the game. For example, suppose you buy Robux to get new outfits or special abilities. You log in only to realize that someone else has hacked your account, all of your Robux is gone, and you must go through customer support to recover your account. Furthermore, this isn’t a one-off scenario. It happens pretty often.
Another issue with scammers is the chat, particularly in the case of young people. Scammers will reach out via chat to try to get personal information or money from people. Unfortunately, this has become so problematic that many people quit playing Roblox.
2. It Requires Parental Guidance
It’s no secret in the gaming community that Roblox is one that children and vulnerable people should avoid. One of the chief concerns of parents is nefarious individuals luring children into situations they aren’t equipped to handle. Roblox has undoubtedly beefed up its parental controls, but keeping kids safe still takes a lot of monitoring.
Roblox offers important features like chat filters that block inappropriate text and images. It also provides important privacy options and age verification. Furthermore, parents can restrict chat communications entirely. However, many kids are crafty and can bypass all these things.
If you’re considering Roblox for your children, it’s one of those games you must stay on top of. From ensuring it doesn’t get hacked to monitoring chats and settings, Roblox isn’t worth installing if you aren’t up to the challenge.
3. The Roblox Community is Notoriously Toxic
Some games have excellent online communities with helpful players and great teammates. Unfortunately, Roblox is hit or miss in this department. The chats are way more toxic than other games.
Bullying and griefing are rampant, and it gets quite disheartening at times. While you can turn the chat features off entirely, you’re missing out on the entire point of online play, which is making friends and interacting with others.
Although most of the Roblox community is kids, they’re pretty savage and relentless. Most of us have horror stories about playing Roblox with other people, from swearing to threats and run-of-the-mill bullying.
4. Playing Roblox Games Created by Random Devs
Another common complaint regarding Roblox is that it gets boring. Sure, there are plenty of games to play and things to do. Unfortunately, nearly anyone can make games and upload them to the platform. While this may seem great on the surface, it actually creates some problems.
First, some games aren’t appropriate for all age groups. Some games have been uploaded that contain graphic content, and because most Roblox players are preteens and teens, the platform is inappropriate for those kinds of materials.
Furthermore, some of the games glitch and have rules that make little sense. While we support independent developers, there are those who contribute to our list of reasons to avoid playing Roblox.
5. Roblox Games Are Addictive
Any video game can be addictive. You spend hours playing and don’t even realize it. However, Roblox takes this a step further. Due to the target age group and the vast number of games and gamers, it’s easy to develop an unhealthy addiction quickly.
Video game addiction is a common problem these days, and Roblox addiction can be more severe than other games. For example, the side effects of Roblox include mental, physical, and academic issues because the targeted audience is more susceptible to addiction. This is further exacerbated by the fact that Roblox is an in-depth platform with plenty of things to discover and play.
Essentially, it’s more challenging for younger audiences to put this game down. Therefore, it may be a good idea to avoid playing Roblox altogether.
6. The In-Game Purchases
Finally, Roblox gets expensive quickly. You don’t have to pay to play, but there are plenty of reasons and opportunities to throw down some cash for the games. However, you aren’t buying any tangible items. Instead, you can purchase costumes and show off to your friends or make statements about how cool you are (which, thanks to the bullying and peer pressure factor, tends to be must-have items).
You can also buy perks and memberships. Furthermore, Roblox players can use Robux to customize their avatars and buy weapons. You can earn Robux, but most items are expensive, and it’s a little too tempting to input some credit card information.
While many games have in-game purchases, Roblox gets costly fast, and the pressure to buy Robux is pretty intense. However, this may be a non-issue if you’re okay with earning Robux and spending them sparingly.
What We’re Playing Instead of Roblox
We quit Roblox because of the reasons listed above. However, we didn’t quit gaming. Fortunately, there are many great games similar to Roblox that we enjoy playing even more. If you’re looking for alternatives, browse this list:
Lego Worlds is an excellent alternative to Roblox for adults and children alike. It has plenty to offer gamers who love to build and explore. Unlike Roblox, it’s a bit safer for kids, and they aren’t likely to encounter explicit content.
Furthermore, Lego Worlds is only one game (although it is an open-world game). It gives players a bit more direction and naturally limits gameplay, therefore curbing gaming addiction.
Minecraft is another excellent game for younger audiences, packed with features and engaging content. You can build, go into battle with creatures of the night (it’s very cartoonish, so we wouldn’t consider this game too graphic), and gamers can explore the open world map.
Minecraft is an older game, but it has withstood the tests of time. It’s easy to play and quite relaxing for the most part. Furthermore, this is a cross-platform game. So, PC users can play the Bedrock version with their friends on consoles and vice versa.
Another really fun game with an educational aspect is Little Alchemy. Admittedly, this game doesn’t have the same aspects of excitement as Roblox, Minecraft, or Lego Worlds. However, it is a great way to pass the time.
Little Alchemy and Little Alchemy 2 let players discover new items using existing elements. You can play this game on mobile devices or a computer. If you love a particular game on Roblox because it’s interesting and relaxing, definitely give this one a try.
Roblox is an incredibly popular game-hosting application. Unfortunately, it isn’t for everyone. From bullying to scams and graphic content, not every gamer can handle it. Furthermore, there’s so much to do on Roblox that it takes self-discipline to curb gaming addiction.
If you’ve also decided to avoid playing Roblox, we hope our list of alternatives was helpful. There are many options available for every age range.
