Why should you avoid an ASURION laptop protection plan? When you purchase a laptop, it is rarely a small expenditure. You’re spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars for something to handle all of your daily computing needs. There might come the odd time that a component goes bad, like a hard drive or motherboard. If you’re out of warranty, you’re out of luck right?

However, I generally recommend any potential customer avoid an extended warranty plan, especially when it isn’t provided by the retailer or manufacturer. While the protection plan covers quite a bit on paper, the reality of the situation is far different.

So, why would I avoid an ASURION laptop protection plan? After nearly a decade in the tech industry, there are a variety of issues you can immediately note when looking at the ins and outs of a protection plan. I’m no stranger to service contracts because hardware can and will go awry at the slightest provocation.

I generally suggest any potential customer give a wide berth to third-party extended warranties. Here are six of my top reasons as to why.

Poor Customer Service

When you purchase a service, you want the service to work for you. However, ASURION’s customer service is lacking. That is certainly saying something after working with terrible customer service departments from the likes of HP and Samsung. ASURION’s customer service department is something else entirely.

You have to jump through hoops just to talk to a representative. When you get one on the line, there is a general lack of consistency when it comes to getting answers. There is also the simple fact that they tout the service as quick and easy, but it is anything but. I’ve seen reports from users who have paid for the service for years claiming that getting someone on the line is a difficult process.

As such, this is one of my top reasons to avoid an ASURION laptop protection plan. You want to know what you’re getting when engaging in any sort of service. If you’re going through the motions and it takes hours just to get to the basic steps to initiate your claim, something is wrong with this picture.

Difficult Claims Process

You might have the top-of-the-line ASURION laptop protection plan, which is fine in concept. Say something goes wrong and it is time to file a claim, what happens next? There are numerous reports from users on the web detailing how difficult the claims process actually can be. I’m talking about instances where the plan purchased for a particular product is claimed not to provide coverage.

There is also the simple fact that you might have to go through three repair attempts before they even attempt a product replacement. Make no mistake, an ASURION laptop protection plan is an expensive service. If you’re spending that money on a service, it should work for you no questions asked. Expensive Service

A four-year protection plan from ASURION for a laptop retailing between $1000 to $1249 is around $200. This isn’t a small expenditure in the slightest. When you consider that you’re already spending a significant amount on a laptop, an additional $200 greatly increases the cost of purchase. Now, I get it, you want to make sure everything is safe and secure when buying your laptop.

However, AppleCare+ from Apple is less and covers more. You still have to use service fees in most instances, especially if ASURION upsells you on one of their comprehensive plans to cover everything in your house. AppleCare+ might be more expensive over four years, but I know what I’m getting there.

Shifting Valuation of Items

I have lost track of the number of customer complaints I’ve read that detail a claim giving back far less than the value of the laptop. Laptops aren’t like cars. If you’ve insured your laptop for a $1000 to $1249 purchase, it should give just as much back.

If you do get a claim to go through, you could easily face getting far less back for your laptop. I’m not talking about over a decade either. This is in some cases just over a single year or so. If you’re paying for four years of protection and need to replace the laptop, there is real potential that you’ll have to spend extra to get a new laptop.

Given ASURION’s poor track record for customer service and the cost of the service in the first place, why bother with it? If you’re looking for a sterling reason to avoid an ASURION laptop protection plan, this is it.

Lacking Certifications

I hold about a half dozen certifications in certain concentrations of the tech industry. They aren’t just pieces of paper when it comes to the hiring process of IT. You have them to let your potential customer or employer know that you are capable and licensed to work in certain market segments. When you go digging a little further with ASURION, you’ll find there aren’t any certifications.

Now, can you do repair work without certs? Sure, that is fine in most cases. However, why would you trust a company that can’t bother getting certified by the likes of Microsoft or Apple for handling repair work? This isn’t a matter of gatekeeping, but rather one of guaranteeing the work done is to an industry standard.

I don’t think every service needs to be certified or licensed. However, if I’m paying hundreds of dollars for a protection plan, I need more than marketing copy to guarantee my product. The lack of credentials combined with the poor customer service is more than enough to avoid an ASURION laptop protection plan in my eyes.

It Isn’t Better Than a Standard Warranty

If you can’t get the coverage you need from a laptop protection plan, what good is it? I know when my Apple laptops have an issue, I can take it down to the Apple store and get things sorted. I’ve got AppleCare on most devices, which comes with your standard purchase. You can purchase extended coverage through AppleCare+.

My devices that aren’t manufactured by Apple also have their standard warranties. In my nearly 40 years on this earth, I haven’t had much of a reason to engage the services of an extended warranty. If you’re considering one, I completely get it. However, you have other options when it comes to making sure your purchase stays safe.

If you’re purchasing Apple hardware and you’re after some extra protection, I would suggest AppleCare+. You’ll have to pay service fees, but these are usually a flat rate depending on the repair needed. I’ve got it on my MacBook Air until I plan to replace it in a few years. For the time being, it gives some extra peace of mind, however.

I’m not saying this is a foolproof replacement for any sort of comprehensive insurance plan when it comes to your laptop purchase. You’re certainly left in the dark if you’re using something like a Windows laptop. However, if you are in the Apple ecosystem, it makes sense to utilize it.

There is also the simple fact that getting your servicing done is just a matter of finding an Apple store. I have yet to have a claim denied or service turned down for any Apple product that develops a hardware fault. Usually, in the case of something like spilling a drink on the laptop, I know I’ll have to pay for repairs as it stands.

Purchase with a Credit Card

Depending on your credit card provider, purchasing a laptop can lead to an extended warranty of sorts. My Capital One card extended the service window of my wife’s Dell laptop by an extra year, covering any sort of manufacturer faults or defects. This isn’t universal across all credit cards, so check with your providers before using one to purchase a laptop.

Also, make sure you have the budget to afford to pay for something on credit. Don’t spend outside of your means, as that can lead to problems larger than a faulty laptop.

Engage a Repair Service

There is honestly no getting around it. If your laptop is out of the warranty coverage period, you might have to pay for the services of a technician. When you think about it, this could be a cheaper prospect than actually engaging with an ASURION laptop protection plan. Some repairs aren’t costly, like a battery replacement.

If you’re having to replace something massive like a screen or mainboard, you’d be better off just purchasing a different laptop in the first place. It is going to be a game of measuring pros and cons when it comes to getting any sort of estimate of work from a repair clinic.

At any rate, those repair clinics are likely going to have some sort of licensing or certification for repair work on your laptop. I would trust a certified local business over a company like ASURION any day of the week.

So, should you avoid an ASURION laptop protection plan? I think for the cost, you are far better off just handling things on your own. Purchasing through a credit card, or using the standard warranty are going to net far better results. Yes, it won’t cover accidents like spilling a drink on your laptop. However, when looking at ASURION’s track record, it doesn’t seem like they will either.

As such, you are going to be your best advocate. I wouldn’t recommend any extended warranty program, simply from a peace of mind perspective. I get it, it is terrible when something goes wrong. However, I certainly wouldn’t add extra stress in the form of dealing with a company like ASURION when my laptop’s functionality goes south.
