6 Reasons to Avoid a Dell S2722DZ Monitor at All Costs

Why should you avoid a Dell S2722DZ monitor? Finding a multi-function monitor can seem like a daunting task, especially with the wide variety of choices on the market. Dell’s S2722DZ monitor has proven to be a popular choice, thanks in part to the handy camera and built-in speakers. However, it might not be the best solution for you and your home office.

Today’s review will be taking a closer look at the S2722DZ and the things that make it avoidable as a whole. Every piece of tech has its drawbacks, but you might end up finding yourself quite disappointed going for this particular monitor.

What Is the Dell S2722DZ Monitor?

The Dell S2722DZ is a 27-inch video conferencing monitor running at a 1440p resolution. The major selling point for this particular monitor is the all-in-one solution it provides for video conferencing. You have a pair of 5-watt speakers to provide audio playback, noise-canceling microphones, and a built-in camera.

Aside from its basic functionality, this monitor has connectivity to spare. It comes out of the box with support for Apple’s latest line of laptops and desktops, with a USB Type-C connection providing up to 65 watts of power and full display compatibility. You’ve also got DisplayPort, HDMI, and additional USB Type-C connections for hooking up your favorite accessories.

Reasons to Avoid a Dell S2722DZ Monitor

Find out why you should avoid a Dell S2722DZ video conferencing monitor and look at our alternatives instead.

It’s Expensive for a Business Monitor

dell s2722dz
The S2722DZ is one of the more expensive choices for a business monitor.

With a base cost of $379.99, the Dell S2722DZ is a premium product through and through. Sure, it isn’t running the same price as something like an Apple Display, but it is still on the pricier side of the equation. When it gets down to it, you’re paying quite a bit for a monitor that doesn’t particularly excel in any one area.

The high cost could perhaps be forgiven by a stunning display or a stellar webcam. When it gets down to it, however, the Dell S2722DZ is simply average at all of these tasks. As you’ll discover further on, it is very much a jack-of-all-trades while mastering none of its own. There are plenty of multi-tasking monitors on the market in the same price bracket that outperform the S2722DZ in multiple areas.

The Display Has Low Contrast

Color reproduction is a serious issue with the Dell S2722DZ, but we’ll dive into that a little further. The thing to keep in mind with this display is that it also has poor contrast support. IPS panels are usually renowned for their color reproduction as a whole. However, when it gets right down to it, the blacks on the Dell S2722DZ are nothing to write home about.

The display has a contrast ratio of 941:1 meaning it is incapable of displaying true blacks on the screen. Now, for most users, this might not be a dealbreaker. However, when you consider the high asking price for the monitor, the least they could do is improve the contrast ratio for the display.

There Are Issues with the Adjustable Stand

Most monitors will come with an adjustable stand these days. However, you’ll want to avoid the Dell S2722DZ because this stand leaves something to be desired. In its basic configuration, it works fine. That said, issues start to arise when trying to add height to the monitor itself. The stand will tilt and do all manner of expected functions.

However, it becomes an issue when it comes down to overall height. The adjustable stand simply doesn’t add enough height. You could circumvent this issue entirely with something like a monitor riser for your desk. That might not be an option for every office, unfortunately. As such, don’t buy the monitor if you’re looking for a little extra wiggle room on the stand itself.

The Camera Quality Is Mediocre

dell s2722dz
A standalone webcam is going to be a better choice than relying on the S2722DZ’s built-in solution.

You would honestly think that the video conferencing part of the Dell S2722DZ would be the real standout. However, you’d be wrong in that line of thinking. The 5MP webcam is serviceable, and that is being quite generous as a whole. You’ll want to avoid the Dell S2722DZ because there are issues with the clarity and quality of the images captured with the webcam.

Webcams are rarely going to be a good replacement for something like a dedicated camera with a proper sensor and lens. If you’re buying this solely for the video conferencing capabilities, you’d be better off just purchasing a good-quality monitor and a separate webcam with a higher overall resolution.

Its Built-In Speakers Are Weak

This is another of the areas where the multi-function uses of the Dell S2722DZ pale in comparison to separate solutions. This video conferencing monitor comes with a pair of 5-watt speakers, which are fine on paper. When you listen to them during audio playback, however, the issues are more readily apparent.

The quality of the drivers on the speakers themselves is lackluster as a whole. You’re going to experience tinny sound and extreme distortion when pushing to higher volumes. Not that you’ll be able to push them hard, but the low power of these speakers when they don’t get very loud in the first place.

Poor Color Reproduction

IPS panels are usually regarded as one of the top choices when it comes to color reproduction for computer monitors. Sadly, the colors on display from the Dell S2722DZ are lackluster, not nearing the same vibrancy as comparable monitors from other manufacturers.

You could treat this as an expensive VA panel, but simply put it is a rather average experience as a whole. The poor color is just the final nail in the coffin, so to speak, for the Dell S2722DZ. If you’re already in the market for a monitor with this sort of base price, you might as well just look for other options that can function as a solid monitor.

The ASUS BE279QSK has a worse camera than the S2722DZ, but you won’t be purchasing this monitor solely for its webcam. The BE279QSK has a stellar display, with a stable FHD resolution and 60Hz refresh rate. This isn’t a monitor to wow you in terms of overall performance, but it does the job and does it cheaper than Dell’s video conferencing monitor.

Contrast and color reproduction as a whole are great on the ASUS monitor. The price certainly is right as well, coming in at $140 less than the Dell monitor. One of the great selling points of the BE279QSK is the blue light reduction technology. This is a great monitor, and the price certainly leaves room in the budget for a better set of speakers and a high-resolution webcam.

The VG2440V is a very budget-friendly monitor, coming in at a suggested retail price of $199 at the time of writing. Like the ASUS monitor, it does feature a worse webcam and less-than-stellar speakers. However, this is a stable monitor with a 60Hz refresh rate that should work just fine in the office.

This is a true IPS display with great contrast and color reproduction. It may lack the wider resolution seen with the Dell video conferencing monitor, but that’s forgivable for the lower overall price. You could readily purchase a good webcam and a decent USB headset for your video conferencing needs if needed.

The Dell C2722DE is an improved monitor in most facets when compared directly to the S2722DZ. You’ve got a better stand, the same great viewing angles, and more options when it comes to connectivity.

This all is punctuated with a lower price tag of $299.99. The Dell C2722DE won’t be in everyone’s budget but is a great premium choice for users looking for a good business monitor. You’ve got HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, and even ethernet ports on this monitor, letting you get a hard-wired internet connection without going behind the PC.

Closing Thoughts

The Dell S2722DZ is a fine monitor in most aspects but is let down by the overall execution of its parts. It doesn’t excel as a monitor, the speakers are quite poor, and the webcam’s resolution and image quality leave something to be desired. You’re better off picking up any of the alternatives and a separate webcam to get an ideal video conferencing experience.
