QNED Explained

The name, QNED stands for Quantum Nano-Emitting Diode, a transmissive display technology that combines quantum dots with NanoCell screens to create vibrant colors and high-brightness images. 

QNED is not self-emissive (it does not generate its light). Instead, it uses mini LED (Light-Emitting Diode) technology to illuminate the display. A light-emitting diode is a type of back-light that controls brightness and creates a contrast between different screen parts by using tiny LED lights. 

MicroLED Explained

MicroLED stands for Micro Light-Emitting Diode. It is a display technology comprising several tiny LEDs that use inorganic material to self-illuminate each display pixel (the smallest units in a digital display). Further, MicroLED has a self-emitting capability, which allows for extremely low black levels that increase its peak brightness.

Now that we’ve established what QNED and MicroLED are, let’s compare them.

Price

The QNED’s MiniLED back-light technology is finding its way into the LCD consumer market at increasingly reasonable prices. Currently, the QNED MiniLED TVs range between $4,679 and $10,799. In addition, we expect QNEDs to be produced at lower costs in the near future, making them accessible to more customers.

MicroLED is a direct-view innovation representing a significant step towards big-screen picture quality and is yet to be mass produced. However, in 2022, Samsung released MicroLED screens ranging from 89 to 140 inches. These units cost between $80,000 and $150,000. Thus, the main reason microLEDs are not in mass production is their high cost. 

Size 

QNED TVs face the same size limits as traditional LED displays. In short, they can be larger than the biggest OLED TVs but still fall short of the wall-sized possibilities offered by microLEDs. QNED TVs are typically available in sizes ranging from 50 to 86 inches.

There is no real limit to the size of a microLED TV. For example, Sony has configured their CrystalLED (microLED) in sizes as large as 17 feet, with a massive 16K resolution to match. Subsequently, it’s an incredibly versatile system that can be scaled up by incorporating more microLED panels. The MicroLED comprises 76, 89, 101, 114, and 140-inch displays.

Availability

QNED technology is easier and less expensive to develop. Therefore, QNED TVs are available in major online retail stores like Amazon and Best Buy, as well as the LG online brand store. In addition, when economies of scale come into play, QNED has the potential to be substantially cheaper and more available to consumers.

In contrast, the idea behind microLED display technology is straightforward, but developing a microLED display is a hard task. Therefore, microLED TVs are less available than QNED and other TVs. Manufacturing is currently the biggest hindrance to mass-producing and monetizing this next-generation display technology. Currently, you can find some great microLEDs on Samsung Business or Sony.

Display

The LG QNED uses Mini LEDs, which are a smaller and more advanced back-light technology.   1. A Texas Tech University research group led by Prof. Jingyu Lin and Prof. Hongxing Jiang developed MicroLED technology in 2000.

Recent Updates for QNED and MicroLED TVs

Here are a few of the recent updates made to QNED and MicroLED TVs since February 2023:

  • QNED TVs with MiniLED backlighting. QNED TVs are using MiniLED backlighting to create a more uniform backlight with better contrast and black levels.
  • MicroLED TVs with larger screens. MicroLED TVs now have larger screens and are available with 146-inch and 163-inch screens.
  • MicroLED TVs with lower prices. The lower pricing of MicroLED TVs is making them more affordable for a wider range of consumers.
