PS5 vs. PC: Capabilities, Games, and the Winning Console

When it comes to gaming, the good news is that there is no shortage of choices to find and play the games you love. The bad news is that you often have to make a choice as to how to play those games, and that makes for a pretty big decision in your future.

Comparing the PlayStation 5 to a gaming PC is a very subjective discussion but one that millions have likely considered over the past two-plus years.

This is especially true as the PlayStation 5 (and Xbox Series X) are running as close to PC hardware as ever before. If this was an ideal world, we would all have all the gaming hardware we want, but in reality, we need to make tough decisions.

So, let’s help make this particular decision a little easier and see whether the PlayStation 5 (PS5) or a gaming PC is right for you.

PS5 vs. PC: What’s the Difference?

Pricing

When it comes to pricing for a gaming PC, it can be a very open-ended question as to how little or how much you can spend. This is a very different consideration from the PlayStation 5 which has very set costs.

For the PS5, you have two price options that have been determined by Sony and are now being passed on by all major retailers. At the $399 price point, you can purchase the digital version of the PS5 which is the exact same hardware as the more expensive PS5 model, minus its disc drive. If you jump to $499, you get the PS5 with the disc drive, but again, the exact same internal hardware as other PlayStation 5 versions. There are also special edition hardware options like the God of War: Ragnarok PlayStation 5 edition currently available for $459 as a digital edition or $559 with a disc drive. These prices don’t look like they are going away anytime soon as it’s more than two years after the PS5 release and the console has yet to see any major retailer discounts.

In the case of a gaming PC, the cost is pretty much all over the place but in a good way. What you pay is based on how powerful of hardware you decide upon. The better or larger the screen, the more memory, bigger RAM allotment, and overall more impressive hardware is going to determine your price. You can buy a solid gaming PC for $500 but you can also buy a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card for the same price and stick it into a $3,000 gaming PC that plays whatever you can throw at it. However, to get a gaming PC that plays games roughly the same way as the PS5, expect to spend around $1,000 to $1,200.

Performance

This is really the biggest consideration for PC buyers who are on the fence between a home console and a dedicated PC. With the PS5, you know exactly what type of performance you are going to get with every game based on the hardware. The PS5’s eight-core Zen 2 CPU with RDNA 2-based GPU and 16GB of memory is going to play every game the same way for everyone.

You might see a difference based on how good a television is or whether you are connected to HDMI 2.1 for improved refresh rates, but for the most part, a PS5 will play the exact same for everyone. Ultimately, PS5 performance is reliable, and consistent, and games are built solely with this hardware in mind so development is optimized to play their absolute best.

On the gaming PC front, you’ll want to consider that performance here is far more open-ended as you can get as good or as mediocre performance as you want. According to internet sleuths, to get comparable performance on a gaming PC as a PS5, you’ll want to pair an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Ryzen 5 5700X with at least 16GB of DDR5 RAM plus either an RTX 2070 graphics card or AMD RTX 5700 XT to make a proper comparison.

The difficult news is that to get this equal comparison, you’ll have to come back to the price discussion as combining all of these parts will equal a price that is possibly two times more expensive than the PS5 console. To find the best performance on a gaming PC, you might have to experiment a little with the refresh rate in order to have the best gaming experience.

Game Library

For many years now Sony has been home to some of the best games playable on any gaming console. Sure, Xbox has had its Halo, Gears of War, and Sea of Thieves, but the PS5 exclusive gaming list is well beyond that and that’s before you get to the non-exclusive titles. Games like Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West, God of War: Ragnarok, Marvel’s Spider-man: Miles Morales, and Ghosts of Tsushima are games you really have to play to believe.

There is an incredibly deep and comprehensive lineup of games available for the PS5 especially when you factor in backward compatibility with PS4 titles. On top of the games already out, Sony has already teased dozens of console exclusives for 2023 and beyond. Rest assured that any PS5 buyer will never want for a game to play of nearly any genre. Plus, games frequently going on sale is an easy way to quickly create a backlog that will keep you busy for months.

As expansive as the game library is for the PS5, the PC library is infinitely larger. Not only do you have a huge selection of modern games available but a massive library of games that have been developed over the past 40 years. Everything from DOS-based titles all the way to Windows 95 to more modern-day games first playable on Windows XP is more than capable of being played on any current PC hardware.

When you factor in that the Valve Steam Store, one of the best places to purchase PC games, has around 40,000 games available and growing is all the reason many people need to go the PC route. The best part is that, while many console games are exclusive to either the PS5 or Xbox, that is not the case as many games from both consoles come to the PC. This is true for titles like Horizon Zero Dawn, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Uncharted 4, God of War, and Death Stranding as just a few of the hundreds of games console to PC games available.

Versatility

When someone purchases a PlayStation 5, there is an expectation that gaming is the primary focus of the console. However, the PS5 can also double as a media center which is an important consideration as you have access to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Spotify, Apple TV, Disney+, YouTube, Twitch, and more.

Ultimately, if you want to do so, you can make the PS5 the centerpiece of any entertainment center and not need to utilize any functions of a smart TV. Just know that if you try and go beyond gaming or streaming with the PS5, you will quickly discover it’s fairly limited beyond those two purposes.

On the other hand, a gaming PC is incredibly versatile and gaming is just one aspect of what it can help you accomplish. As important as gaming is, a PC can also double as a work machine with access to Microsoft’s suite of apps like Word and Excel, not to mention the sheer number of available browsers to download so you can surf the web.

Of course, these are all tasks that can be done on any PC, but with a gaming PC and its more powerful hardware, you might be someone who wants to try their hand at photo or video editing. If you find yourself with a good enough graphics card, you can do both and still have plenty of power for gaming. The sky’s the limit as far as versatility with a gaming PC which makes it an easy victory in this category.

PCs offer a wider range of purposes, as you can use your computer for gaming, work, streaming, and basically anything else you can think of.

Customization

One of the biggest reasons someone will buy a gaming PC is the ability to customize long into the future after purchase. Even with a gaming laptop, which is arguably more limited as far as upgrades than a desktop, you can still upgrade the hard drive and the RAM to continue future-proofing the hardware.

For the PS5, the amount of customization is pretty limited to swapping out for a bigger hard drive or swapping out the side plates from their default white to another color. This level of customization, or lack of it, is hardly a deal breaker as most PS5 buyers know these limitations before making a purchase.

What this means for PC buyers is that anyone who wants even a remedial level of customization should definitely go on the PC side. Especially for desktop gaming PCs, you can find hardware quite literally in all shapes and sizes, in any color, and you can pair the desktop with different colors of mice, keyboards, and monitors. There’s just so much more than you can do with a PC with customization beyond just upgrading the internal components that it yet again finds itself an easy victory in this category.

PS5 vs. PC: 5 Must-Know Facts

PS5 vs. PC: Which One is Better?

The console versus gaming PC argument has lasted for decades and as each console gets more powerful, this discussion only gets more and more difficult. For many people, the gaming PC is going to be the best option, especially when you factor in that you can upgrade many of its components, use it for non-gaming purposes, and have access to a much larger library of titles.

However, as great of a recommendation as the PC is, the PS5 is still the better option for most people who just want to game. There’s an already impressive library covering many genres and games that instantly load so you can be up and playing within minutes.

PS5 vs. PC: Capabilities, Games, and the Winning Console FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

How difficult is it to find either a digital or disc-based PlayStation 5 these days?

While it’s not nearly as challenging as it was upon release, we are not quite at the days where you can walk into any retailer and expect to find a PS5 available.

What can you do on the PlayStation 5 besides gaming?

For the most part, besides gaming on a PS5, you’ll be able to stream from services like Disney+, Netflix, and HBO Max.

Can every gaming PC or laptop be upgraded?

For the most part, yes, but with limitations. Just about every laptop gaming PC can upgrade its hard drive or RAM but desktop gaming PCs are more upgradable.

How much RAM do you really need for gaming?

The prevailing theory is at least 8GB of RAM is necessary while 16GB is recommended. To future-proof your gaming PC, expanding to 32GB of RAM might be worth considering in the future.

Should you look at pre-built gaming PCs as opposed to building your own?

Unless you have a really good comfort level around building your own PC, pre-built models are absolutely the best path for anyone who wants to go the PC route.
