Pixel Watch 2 vs. Apple Watch 8

When comparing the Pixel Watch 2 vs. Apple Watch 8, you’ll want to consider areas like the design, battery life, features, and operating system.

Design

Since the Apple Watch debuted, the company hasn’t really changed the general design. That means the Apple Watch Series 8 is still square but it’s a very attractive device. It’s the type of smartwatch you can wear anywhere, and it’s available in two sizes.

You can purchase the Series 8 smartwatch in 41mm or 45mm with an aluminum or stainless steel finish. The Pixel Watch 2 is on the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to design. It has a classic, round watch face with a smooth design. It’s been compared to a pebble, and the polished aluminum case looks good in any configuration.

As beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this area could be considered a coinflip unless you have large wrists. The Pixel Watch 2 is only available in 41mm, which will rule it out for some. Both smartwatches have a digital crown, but Apple’s wearable comes in more styles and has more bands.

The Display

If you want a smartwatch with a large display, the Apple Watch Series 8 easily beats the Pixel Watch 2. The 41mm version looks larger on wrists than the same-size Pixel Watch and the 45mm Series 8 provides even more room to work with.

Size may not seem important if you’re just wearing the watch casually, but it makes a difference when you’re trying to read information on these small displays. The Pixel Watch 2’s Always-On display is 1.2 inches with a resolution of 450 x 450. The pixel density is 320ppi, and it’s easy to read indoors or outside, considering it can hit 1,000 nits peak brightness.

Apple’s Series 8 smartwatch has a Retina LTPO OLED display that can also reach the same brightness levels. The 41mm version’s display shakes out to 1.7 inches and provides more real estate due to the square design. The 45mm watch has a 1.9-inch panel with a resolution of 484 x 396 and a ppi of 326.

When comparing the Pixel Watch 2 vs. Apple Watch 9 displays, consider how large of a watch you need. The brightness is the same, and the resolution is comparable on these wearables. Both have crisp, colorful displays, but Apple definitely gives you more room to read.

Tech Specs

If you’re purchasing a smartphone or tablet, it’s always important to pay attention to the tech specs. Smartwatches don’t require the same amount of power, but nobody wants a sluggish watch. That will not be a problem with the Apple Watch Series 8 or Pixel Watch 2.

Qualcomm and Android have a long partnership, and that continues with the Pixel Watch 2. This smartwatch has a Qualcomm 5100 processor and a Cortex M33 co-processor under the hood, along with 2GB of RAM. With the Apple Watch Series 8, you’ll find 1GB of RAM and the company’s S8 dual-core processor.

Both watches have the same amount of storage at 32GB, which is not expandable. While Google’s watch has double the RAM, you may not notice a difference depending on your usage. The Apple Watch and Pixel Watch are both snappy devices, and we feel this area will be a draw for most consumers.

Features

If you want to track your steps or heart rate, you won’t be disappointed with the Apple Watch Series 8 or Pixel Watch 2. Both devices have a full array of sensors and plenty of intuitive features to lure folks in.

The Apple Watch Series 8 has a Sp02 sensor, a heart-rate sensor, and an ECG. It also has fall and crash detection through a high-g accelerometer. It can check on you while you’re sleeping, track ovulation, or your position on a map. Health and fitness tracking are excellent, thanks to Apple’s array of apps and third-party integration.

Google’s Pixel Watch 2 is also a fantastic fitness tracker, partly due to Fitbit. The watch has the same essential sensors, along with a magnetometer. It can do the same thing as Apple’s watch and leans on Fitbit’s popular tools. You’ll also find a wide range of third-party apps for the Pixel Watch 2.

While it may seem like this part of our Pixel Watch 2 vs. Apple Watch 8 shootout is another tie, Apple is the winner, in our opinion. They have spent years perfecting their tech, and everything just feels seamless. Both watches have full GPS capabilities, microphones, speakers, and are water resistant to 50 meters as well.

Battery Life

If we were comparing the original Pixel Watch to the Series 8 from Apple, the Cupertino-based company would clearly win. Google improved battery life on the Pixel Watch 2, however, which puts it more on par with today’s today wearables.

Google lists the Pixel Watch 2 with a 306mAh battery and claims it can get 24 hours per charge. That’s with the always-on display active. User reviews prove that the number is sound, even with regular usage throughout the day. While you may not get a full 24 if you live in the gym, the battery life is impressive.

Apple’s wearables have always had good battery life, and the Series 8 smartwatch is no different. Apple’s version of “all day” battery life clocks in at around 18 hours, which varies depending on usage. It’s not a runaway win, but the Pixel Watch 2 does have an edge with battery life and it’s enough that you should notice a difference.

Compatibility

Compatibility can clear things up quickly if you’ve been on the fence between the Pixel Watch 2 vs. Apple Watch 8. Google produced the Pixel Watch, and the Watch Series 8 comes from Apple. That means they are tied to those company’s ecosystems, affecting your use of the devices.

Do you own an Android smartphone? If so, you’ll want to stick with the Pixel Watch 2. Google’s Wear OS is completely compatible with Android phones. This allows you to enjoy all the features, which is something you can’t do with an iPhone or iPad. Unfortunately, the same is true for the Apple Watch Series 8.

This smartwatch relies on Apple’s operating system and isn’t compatible with Android smartphones. While you can still use the watch, you’ll lose features if it isn’t synced to an i-Device. Both smartwatches provide access to each company’s respective App Stores, however.

You can use either of these smartwatches without a phone to a degree, but they aren’t nearly as smart without the right type of device connected to them.

Pricing

The Apple Watch Series 8 debuted at $399 in 2022. While it’s been replaced by the Apple Watch Series 9 on the company’s official site, the price hasn’t changed much. You can find the watches new for around $350 on sale, but don’t expect a steep discount anytime soon. Apple’s tech holds its price well, and the Series 9 may become hard to get.

Google’s Pixel Watch 2 is newer, as it’s only been on the market since October 2023. It’s $349 new in any color they offer. The Pixel Watch 2 is cheaper than the Series 8 and it’s easier to find online or locally. We also expect this watch to hold its value, although it is a step behind Apple’s flagship wearable.
