Google Pixel Fold has been in the works for some time, with a speculated release in the second half of 2023. While the handset was not yet unveiled, a dummy prototype and industry leaks give us a good idea of what to expect. Meanwhile, Motorola is a pioneer in the foldable phones market. The new Razr smartphone maintains design elements inspired by the original flip handset and integrates a foldable screen similar to that of Samsung’s Z Flip. If you want a foldable smartphone but don’t know which to pick, this comparison between the Google Pixel Fold vs. Motorola Razr might help you decide whether to hit the market today or expect the new launch.

Pixel Fold vs. Motorola Razr: Side-By-Side Comparison

Motorola was a big name in the pre-smart mobile phone era, but the brand didn’t quite make the cut into the smartphone market. Yet, the Razr smartphone, now in its second generation, is a popular and affordable foldable handset.

Rumors about the Pixel Fold have been around for a while, but Google has never confirmed that a foldable device will be launched. Yet, a dummy model was allegedly released, and industry experts expect the handset to be announced in spring 2023. This means we might see it on the market in the second half of the year. However, even if what we know so far is rumors and unofficial leaks, here’s how Google Pixel Fold and Motorola Razr will likely compare:

Pixel Fold vs. Motorola Razr: What’s the Difference?

Pixel Fold is a highly rumored and expected smartphone. Motorola Razr is the revamped version of the first Razr launched in 2005. The former might be announced in spring and released later this year. Google hasn’t confirmed the rumors yet, but that’s sort of the brand’s MO — the tech giant did the same before the launch of the first Pixel phones back in 2016. Meanwhile, Razr is already out there. If you fancy a foldable handset but aren’t sure if you should wait for Google to release its alleged flagship, this detailed comparison might help you decide.

Design

The main difference between Google Pixel Fold and Motorola Razr is the design. The former is a foldable smartphone similar to the Samsung Z Fold. Motorola Razr is a flip phone looking more like Samsung Z Flip. You’ll get a standard display size — more or less — when flipping the Razr open. When unfolding the Pixel Fold, you’ll get a wider screen in landscape mode that you can split. No doubt, the Pixel Fold will be a better choice for multitasking, whereas the Razr is an alternative to the Galaxy Z Flip.

However, neither the Pixel Fold nor the Motorola Razr looks anything like Samsung’s flagship products. According to rumors and a dummy model allegedly released by Google, the Pixel Fold looks more like the Oppo Find N2. Similar to Oppo, the Pixel Fold seems to use a multi-access hinge that allows both screens to rest completely flush with one another. With no gap near the hinge — as it happens in the Z Fold — Pixel Fold will likely provide an improved user experience.

The new Razr’s design is reminiscent of the original Motorola Razr and is ideal for the nostalgic ones who want to revive the old trendsetter. When flipped open, the smart Razr reveals a large screen that, paired with Android, brings all the bells and whistles of modern smartphones in a vintage package. We don’t know yet which colors Pixel Fold will have, but the Razr Gen 2 comes in Liquid Mercury (light gray), Polished Graphite (dark gray), and Blush Golden (rose gold). The Razr Gen 1 Verizon comes in Blush Golden and Noir Black.

Chipset

Another essential difference between the Pixel Fold and Motorola Razr is the chipset. According to rumors, the former is equipped with a Tensor G2 — which makes sense, considering that Google’s Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro run on the same processor. Motorola Razr comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G.

The Snapdragon 765G is said to deliver improved performance compared to the standard 765 model, but it’s weaker than Tensor G2. In fact, the Tensor provides better overall performance, most likely due to the 5nm semiconductors that enhance the operation and reduce power consumption.

Both chipsets deliver a fluid user experience with minimal lag, but they are a far cry from Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that equips the highest-end devices released so far in 2023.

Display

Considering the differences in the type of phone, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Google Pixel Fold is superior to Motorola Razr. In fact, Pixel Fold comes with a full-size screen on the cover and a tablet-like display when unfolded.

The cover display promises a diagonal of 5.8 inches, which is only slightly smaller than the 6.2-inch cover display of the Samsung Z Fold 4. The main display has a diagonal of 7.7 inches, which is actually larger than the Z Fold 4.

Motorola Razr has a tiny cover display that only measures 2.7 inches, but that’s rather large for a flip phone. By comparison, Samsung Z Flip’s cover display only measures 1.9 inches. That’s enough for quick notifications and essentials, such as the clock or weather.

At 6.2 inches, Razr’s main display is generous but smaller compared to other flip phones on the market. The OLED technology delivers bright colors and flawless images.

Camera

Whether you’re a selfie addict or simply like immortalizing everyday moments, both the Pixel Fold and Motorola Razr can snap beautiful photos. However, the Pixel Fold is expected to take better photos than the Razr — but not necessarily better selfies.

In fact, Motorola equips its Razr phones with a 48MP main camera that can capture vibrant pictures, but that’s subpar compared to today’s industry standards. If leaks are true, Google plans to equip the Pixel Fold with a 64MP main camera. This is still under the industry standards for high-end phones but better than Motorola.

Pixel Fold’s downside is seen in the selfie camera, which is only 8MP, according to leaks. Meanwhile, Motorola Razr features a 20MP selfie camera. On both devices, you can use the primary camera for selfies, too. In this case, the Pixel Fold has the upper hand.

Memory

In line with most high-end phones, Pixel Fold and Motorola Razr come with internal storage and no expandable memory. Plus, if you like to capture lots of pictures or play resource-avid games, then the Razr might be a better choice, with 256GB of internal storage space.

Apparently, Pixel Fold will only have 128GB of storage. It is uncertain whether Google plans to make multiple versions of this phone so that users can choose the desired memory size. If it doesn’t, 128GB is quite disappointing.

RAM-wise, Pixel Fold wins with 12GB versus the 8GB of RAM on the Motorola Razr. Higher memory capacity should solve most lag issues and make the Pixel Fold a lot more responsive than the Razr.

Battery

Google gains the upper hand in the battery department, too. At least if the rumors are true, and the Pixel Fold will come with a 5,000mAh battery. At this capacity, and with Android v13, you should get over a full day of battery life.

Motorola Razr comes with a 2,800mAh battery that allows you to go a full day without recharging the phone. Turbopower charging, available with the 15W Turbopower charger sold separately, can give you hours of power with just minutes of charging. We have to wait and see whether a similar feature will be available on the Pixel Fold.

Price

Pixel Fold wasn’t officially announced, and we still have to wait for it to be launched. However, speculations have it priced around $1799, the same as the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Motorola Razr Gen 2, which is the latest flip phone from the brand, costs around $599.
