OnePlus 10 Pro vs. Nothing Phone 1: What’s the Difference?

While we’ve compared the upstart Nothing Phone 1 against the iPhone 13, it’s time to see how it does against a phone in the same class.

OnePlus was the company Carl Pei co-founded and left before founding Nothing Technologies, and the OnePlus 10 is arguably the phone’s closest competitor.

Design

The biggest difference between the OnePlus 10 Pro and Nothing Phone is the design. That’s one of the main selling points of the .

It has a case that’s transparent on the back, so you can see some of the inner workings of the smartphone. It’s a clean, modern design that’s highlighted by the Glyph Interface.

A series of LEDs on the back of the phone is synced to the device. You can set patterns for individual ringtones or check the charging status with a glance. The system is unique and highly customizable although the only color the LEDs emit is white.  It has an aluminum frame with slim bezels but does not have an edgeless design as you’ll find on the OnePlus 10 Pro.

The OnePlus 10 Pro doesn’t have a transparent back; just a logo and a large camera module. The smartphone has a higher screen-to-body ratio at 90% than the which is 85.8%. Both phones have an aluminum frame and provide protection through Gorilla Glass. The OnePlus 10 Pro uses Gorilla Glass Victus, however.

While style is a matter of opinion, we think the OnePlus 10 Pro has a sleeker design compared to the Tron-like style of the Nothing Phone 1. Both are well-built, although the OnePlus 10 is larger and around 8 grams heavier.

Display

Each of these smartphones is in the phablet category with a screen size of over 6.2 inches. Both have AMOLED displays, but there is a significant difference in resolution, depth, and peak brightness.

The recently released has a 6.5-inch AMOLED display with HDR 10+ capabilities. It has a refresh rate of 120Hz and is vivid with a pixel density rating of 402 PPI. It has a peak brightness of 700 nits and is 500 nits under typical usage.

On the OnePlus 10 Pro, you’ll find a larger 6.7-inch Fluid AMOLED display clocked at 120Hz. It’s slightly larger, but just as snappy and has a sharper picture. This smartphone has a resolution of 1440 x 3216p, compared to the at 1080 x 2400p. OnePlus’s flagship smartphone also has a peak brightness level of 1,300 nits, giving it a significant edge all-around.

Performance

With smartphone performance, it all comes down to the processor under the hood and how much memory a phone has. While our OnePlus 10 Pro vs. comparison shows both handsets have 8GB or 12GB of RAM, the processors set them apart.

The older OnePlus 10 Pro has a Snapdragon 8 octa-core processor. The gen 1 chip was rated at 3,184 through the multi-core GeekBench CPU test, which is just a bit higher than the Google Pixel 6 Pro. The graphical GFXBench test rating is 48 frames per second (FPS).

Beneath the glass of the Nothing Phone A063 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+. It’s also an octa-core process, but one that scores 2,803 on the same test. The GFXBench rating is slightly lower as well at 33 frames per second.

On paper, the Nothing Phone lags behind the OnePlus 10 Pro with power, although casual users shouldn’t notice a huge dip in performance.

Camera Configuration

Cameras are a major selling point and one of the more used features on smartphones today. Whether you prefer to take selfies or nature shots, the OnePlus 10 Pro and both do an excellent job.

The newer Nothing Phone has a 16MP front-facing camera with an aperture of f/2.5. It can record 1080p video at 30 frames per second, while the rear camera can handle 4K video at 30 FPS or 1080p at 60 FPS. The rear camera has live HDR and two 50MP sensors.

The main 24mm camera has PDAF and OIS with an aperture of f/1.9, and the secondary 50 MP ultrawide sensor is listed at f/2.2. OnePlus went with a larger 32 MP front-facing camera on the 10 Pro and added an additional sensor on the back.

There are three cameras on the OnePlus 10 Pro. The main is a 48 MP 23mm lens featuring Laser AF, OIS, and multi-directional PDAF. The secondary camera has the same specifications as the sensor on the but is wider at 150 degrees compared to 114 degrees. An 8 MP 77mm f/2.4 telephoto lens rounds things out with 3x optical zoom, PDAF, and OIS.

When you throw in Hasselblad Color Calibration, HDR, and 4K video at up to 120 FPS, the OnePlus 10 Pro is the clear winner. It will take better photos than the , including 8K video at 24 frames per second.

Storage & Connectivity

It’s hard to find a smartphone with expandable storage even as games and media grow larger each year. Neither the OnePlus 10 Pro nor the Nothing Phone has a micro SD card slot, but both come in multiple storage configurations.

The gives consumers the choice between 128GB or 256GB of storage, depending on their needs. You’ll find the same options on the OnePlus 10 Pro with the addition of a 512GB model.

Both phones have dual-band Wi-Fi across the same bands with Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC connectivity, and the audio appears to be even based on user reviews.

Battery Life

Nobody enjoys a smartphone that needs constant charging, although smartphone manufacturers have managed to squeeze extra juice from batteries through optimization. A larger battery can significantly alter the design of a smartphone, which is a negative with today’s sleek handsets.

We found there was just a 500mAh difference in battery size between the OnePlus 10 Pro vs. Nothing Phone comparison. The OnePlus 10 Pro has a 5,000mAh battery compared to a 4,500mAh battery on the . It’s enough to make a difference in battery life, however, especially when you consider charging times.

Both phones have reverse wireless charging and fast charging capabilities. Fast wireless charging on the OnePlus 10 Pro is rated at 50w while speedy wired charging is listed at 65w, which can take you from 0 to 58% in around 15 minutes.

With the , the fast charging system can get you to 50% in 30 minutes at 33w or 100% in 70 minutes. The wireless charging rate is 15w. Simply put, the OnePlus 10 Pro has a battery that will last longer and charge up faster through a USB cable or wireless charging.

Price and Availability

The OnePlus 10 Pro was released on January 13, 2020, while the launched around 5 months later. That doesn’t have a major impact on pricing with these devices, but there is a big difference in viability.

OnePlus has produced more than a dozen smartphones, so while they are “new” compared to Samsung or Apple, they’ve been around for a while. That means that they have partnerships with carriers across the globe, including those in the United States.

Want to purchase the OnePlus 10 Pro through T-Mobile? That’s an option, and you can find it on Verizon’s network, although compatibility with other providers can be spotty.  Consumers interested in the will have to import it if they live in the United States as it’s not designed for these networks.

The phone may work with some carriers, but you’ll need to check well in advance of placing an order for the phone. Pricing varies on this handset as well for that reason, considering you can purchase the OnePlus 10 Pro on a plan with a discount.

Pricing also varies by region and color with both devices, with the version in China being the cheaper of the two across the board. Some variants are harder to find than others, but you can expect to pay between $780 to $900 for the OnePlus 10 Pro or $470 to $600 for the Nothing Phone.

OnePlus 10 Pro vs. Nothing Phone: Which is Better?

Which one of these smartphones is the winner all depends on if you favor notifications and LED lights over performance. Both are fully capable of getting you through several upgrade cycles and are cheaper than comparable phones from larger brands like Samsung or Apple. The OnePlus 10 Pro also runs a forked version of Android, like the Nothing Phone.

The OnePlus 10 Pro is the larger and faster device of the two. It has better cameras, a slightly faster processor, and a larger battery that charges faster. While the isn’t quite as fast, it is flashy, thanks to the LED-illuminated backside, and it’s quite a bit cheaper. It’s harder to get and may not work on carriers in the United States, however.

Overall, we think the OnePlus 10 is a more well-rounded device that provides more bang for your buck as a flagship. The is unique, but this is the first generation of a smartphone that’s not easy to acquire in certain parts of the world–-even if it does have a budget-friendly price point.
