When Nvidia released the RTX 3080, it was one of the best graphics cards on the market, even better than the Ti variant of the 3070 series which we compared in a previous article. The only other GPU maker to challenge Nvidia’s RTX 3080, was AMD with the RX 6800 XT. But even AMD has nothing to rival the advanced media and ray-tracing power offered by Nvidia’s latest cards.
Nvidia beat themselves at their own game, releasing the RTX 3080-Ti to improve upon the already incredibly powerful RTX 3080. With the Ti variant of this graphics card, you get an additional 2GB of DDR6 video memory, as well as over 1,500 additional shader cores. The additional memory and core count come in handy when you are running games at max settings or trying to render 4K video files quickly. Although either card will be more than satisfactory, the RTX 3080-Ti gives you a little more power to get things done.
The RTX 3080-Ti also packs even more texture mapping units (TMUs) and Render Output Pipelines (ROPs). These are crucial for delivering an even higher level of graphical performance than the non-Ti version of the card. The additional Tensor Cores and Ray Tracing Cores found in the RTX 3080-Ti provide further proof that this card is a souped-up RTX 3080. Will this increase be noticeable at all? Perhaps, but most likely only the hardcore enthusiasts will be able to tell the difference in most games.
RTX 3080 vs 3080-Ti for Crypto Mining
If you are looking for a GPU for mining cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin, then these graphics cards may not be the most profitable choice. Although it is possible to mine with these cards, Nvidia has taken measures to prevent you from doing so. The official driver running both the RTX 3080 and 3080-Ti can detect when you are attempting to execute certain crypto-mining algorithms and cut the hash rate in half.
It is possible to get around this, as these GPUs are still somewhat popular with crypto miners, but only if you are willing to experiment with different mining algorithms and drivers, you can get decent returns, but for the best results, you should look elsewhere. If you are keen on mining with your RTX 3080 or 3080-Ti, just know that expected profits are under $2 per day, meaning it would take almost two years of straight mining to break even on your investment.
If you want to get into mining, stick with a GPU that is not locked with anti-mining software. Nvidia and AMD both provide cards specifically designed for mining crypto that would be much better than either the RTX 3080 or 3080-Ti.
RTX 3080 vs 3080-Ti: Which One Should You Choose?
For your average gamer, the slight difference in performance may not be noticeable. If your budget is more limited, you may consider the RTX 3080 a better value. The slight increase in performance you get from going to the RTX 3080-Ti, may not be worth it, especially considering both cards are capable of running every game out there at 4K resolution on maximum settings.
On the other hand, if you are a truly hardcore gaming enthusiast and you have to have the best frame rates possible, the RTX 3080-Ti may be worth the extra cost. As of right now, there is no card that stands up to the RTX 3080-Ti, besides Nvidia’s own 3090-Ti for almost double the price. If you want the best you can get, without having to take out a loan, the RTX 3080-Ti is the graphics card for you.
All in all, either GPU is a solid choice and will last you at least a few years before needing to upgrade. With a card like the RTX 3080-Ti, you will be playing the latest games on Ultra settings with no issues for years to come.
