Nothing Phone 1 vs Samsung S22: What’s the Difference?

Phone 1 boasts a unique design and innovative features. It mirrors the design and structure of an iPhone, from the chamfered edges to the rounded corners, as well as the placement of the camera. It has an in-screen fingerprint sensor. However, what makes it truly stand out is the 900W LED lighting system on the Glyph Interface on the semi-transparent back panel.
The Samsung S22, on the other hand, is a statement of Samsung’s dedication to innovation and technology. This phone is only 7.6 mm thick and weighs 167g, but it feels solidly built. It doesn’t attract fingerprints on the back panel, though it has a noticeable bump at the spot where the camera lies.
So how do these two phones compare?
Camera System
The Phone 1 has two cameras: a standard 50-megapixel camera and an ultrawide one. Because of this, it has avoided the marketing buzz that usually comes with additional macro or monochrome cameras on mid-range phones. The regular camera has a slightly wider aperture than most phones. This means it can take better photos in low light conditions.
The ultrawide lens is excellent for capturing landscapes, architecture, or anything else you want to show off in all its glory—without the need for a selfie stick. This phone’s camera does not come with a zoom lens. However, you can digitally zoom in on an image up to 2x. A greater magnification results in a grainy picture. Instead of using flash, you can use the glyphs to create a fill light that allows you to take photos at night.
Samsung S22 features an aluminum band encircling its middle section and a camera system similar to Samsung’s earlier models, but with some notable improvements. This newer model sports a 23% larger sensor (50MP), which lets in more light, improving image quality.
Display
Nothing Phone 1 features a 6.55-inch Full HD+ OLED scratch-resistant display capable of displaying 120 frames per second. It also includes HDR 10 plus support for rich colors and vibrant details. On the other hand, Samsung S22 boasts a large, high-resolution display with a high-speed refresh rate. You can configure the Motion Smoothing feature to a rate of 60Hz or set the option to Smart mode, which automatically adjusts screen refresh rates from 24 Hz up to 120 Hz.
Platform
The most controversial aspect of Nothing Phone 1 was the revelation that the company had chosen to build its system around a seventh-generation Qualcomm chipset—a version of the Snapdragon 778G+ designed for low-cost Android phones. While the 778G+ won’t break any speed records, it’s more capable of handling everyday tasks and games. You can enjoy several rounds of Fortnite or PUBG without experiencing any lag, and it can run streaming services like YouTube and Netflix without a glitch!
On the other hand, S22 is eight times faster than the average smartphone CPU. It also runs multiple apps simultaneously and loads high-quality media files smoothly. The phone will feature either a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, 12GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage, or a 4nm Exynos 2200 chipset, a powerful processor capable of handling large applications and games. This Exynos version has an Xclipse 920 GPU – a result of the collaboration between Samsung and AMD.
Battery Capacity
Nothing Phone 1’s 4,500mAh battery can last up to 18 hours between charges. It’s not the greatest battery you’ll find in a phone, but it should be enough to get you through the day without needing to find an outlet. With medium usage, the S22’s 3700mAh battery can last a full day, but heavy use and 120Hz refresh rate may exhaust the battery within a few hours. However, you can minimize battery consumption thanks to the power-saving feature.
Water Rating
The Samsung S22 is water-resistant and can withstand water submersion in 1.5 m of water for up to half an hour. It also comes with an IP68 rating, meaning it is dustproof and can withstand small amounts of pressure. This phone is an excellent all-rounder, offering the sophistication of a premium product in a package that feels good to hold. On the other hand, Phone 1 cannot survive full water immersion. Hence, it’s not a phone to take with you for a swim. It features an IP53 rating meaning it can withstand water spills and dust to a limited extent.
Nothing Phone 1 vs Samsung S22: Price
The Nothing Phone 1 is much more affordable than the Samsung S22. It, therefore, appeals to many buyers looking for an affordable high-end smartphone with the look and feel of an iPhone. The Galaxy S22 and Nothing Phone 1 have metal-glass sandwich construction with flat glass display panels, but their aluminum frames differ. In contrast to the rounded shape of Samsung’s frame, the Nothing Phone 1 has sharp corners and a flat back for an iPhone-like in-hand feel. However, it is slightly thicker than the S22. It has a fingerprint sensor on its front display, whereas that of the S22 can be found on the back of its glass panel, allowing secure unlocking and authentication.
The Nothing Phone 1’s back is its most innovative part. It has a semi-transparent cover that reveals some carefully designed innards and LED light strips known as “Glyph Interface.” Though less flashy, Galaxy S22 also has a distinguishable feature; its camera module, which juts over the side of its chassis— a design choice that emphasizes the camera’s importance.
Screen Display
Both phones have a display that covers most of their front panel. The Nothing Phone 1 has a 6.5-inch AMOLED display with a 20:9 aspect ratio and 2400 x 1080 resolution. Galaxy S22 has a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen with a 19:5 aspect ratio and 2340 x 1080 resolution. It features a crisper display, a better screen-to-body ratio, and a brighter screen than the Nothing Phone 1.
Galaxy S22 also comes with Gorilla Glass Victus protection; a better version of the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 that’s on Nothing Phone 1. The phone also has thinner bezels than the Nothing Phone 1— a fancy way of saying there are fewer gaps between its display and frame.
Cameras
The Galaxy S22 has a 50 MP Triple Rear Camera with an f/1.8 aperture and a 10-megapixel front camera. It also features a new addition to the camera lineup; a secondary telephoto lens that allows for 3x optical zoom. On the other hand, the Nothing Phone 1 features a 50 MP dual rear camera with an f/1.9 aperture and a 16MP selfie.
The most significant difference between the two cameras is the secondary telephoto lens. It allows the Galaxy S22 to capture better detail and offer more flexibility in post-processing. Although the Nothing Phone 1 has a wider aperture and can therefore take equally good low-light photos, it lacks a 3X telephoto lens, making it no match for Samsung’s flagship camera.
Software and Performance
The Galaxy S22 runs on the latest version of Samsung’s One UI, one of the most user-friendly interfaces available today. It offers plenty of customization options and comes preloaded with several valuable features such as AR Doodle, Bixby Vision, and more.
The Nothing Phone 1 runs on a custom version of Android called NothingOS, which is based on Android 12. It is fast, sleek, and lightweight. Although it doesn’t have as many features as Samsung’s One UI, users can still customize the look of their phone using themes in the settings menu.
Performance-wise, both phones are equally good. The Galaxy S22 has a faster processor and more RAM than the Nothing Phone 1. While Samsung’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 offers greater processing power, you will likely notice this benefit only during intensive tasks like video editing or prolonged gaming sessions. Both phones should perform at the same level for applications that don’t require intense processing power (such as social media and text messaging).
Nothing Phone 1 vs Samsung S22: Which One Should You Use?
Choosing between the Nothing Phone 1 and Samsung S22 comes down to how much you plan to spend and what you want from a phone in terms of design and functionality. If you’re looking for an affordable smartphone with high-end features and a price tag not exceeding $484, the Nothing Phone 1 would be a great choice. But if you don’t mind stretching your budget to $799 in order to acquire a smartphone that can do almost everything, you’ll be happier with a Samsung S22.
