Why Should You Buy the NETGEAR Wireless Access Point (WAX220)?

Wireless Access Points (WAPs) allow you to amplify Wi-Fi signals and improve performance of Wi-Fi networks by reducing latency and enhancing overall network reliability and stability. WAPs are designed for large spaces with lots of obstacles like furniture, walls, floors. They’re ideal for large, multi-level homes, businesses, and institutions such as schools.

WAPs allow users to share their wired internet connections wirelessly so more users can connect simultaneously. They also eliminate any dead spots where Wi-Fi doesn’t work.

NETGEAR Wireless Access Point (WAX220)

The NETGEAR Wireless Access Point is a dual-band access point, which can broadcast on 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands. This feature delivers faster speed and better performance for devices that support 5GHz Wi-Fi.

The NETGEAR Wireless Access Point (WAX220) also supports Wi-Fi 6, the latest Wi-Fi standard, which provides speeds up to four times faster than Wi-Fi 5. Wi-Fi 6 is also better at managing large numbers of devices. And it has a lower latency so there’s less delay between when a user sends a request and when they receive a response.

Other features include:

  • Easy installation with included hardware
  • The ability to support up to 256 devices
  • It’s easy to configure within 10 minutes

Is the NETGEAR Wireless Access Point (WAX220) Worth It?

We compared the NETGEAR Wireless Access Point (list price: $199.99) to two similar WAPs: the Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC Lite ($99) and the TP-Link EAP610 ($199).

The NETGEAR Wireless Access Point and the TP-Link both support Wi-Fi 6, while the Ubiquiti only supports Wi-Fi-5. Similarly, the NETGEAR and TP-Link devices both feature a maximum data rate of 1.2 Gbps, compared to the Ubiquiti, which supports a mere 867 Mbps. In practical terms, 1.2 Gbps is approximately 1.4 times faster than 867 Mbps. So, a file that takes 10 minutes to download on a 867 Mbps connection would only take seven minutes to download on a 1.2 Gbps connection.

The NETGEAR WAP and the TP-Link boast four antennas; the Ubiquiti only has two. WAP antennas receive and transmit the radio waves that Wi-Fi devices use to connect to the network.

All three devices support PoE (Power over Ethernet), which allows the WAPs to receive power over the same Ethernet cable it uses to transmit data.

As you can see, the NETGEAR Wireless Access Point and the TP-Link EAP610 have a number of advantages over the Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC Lite. This is to be expected since the first two cost twice as much as the Ubiquiti device.

The NETGEAR Wireless Access Point and the TP-Link EAP610 are evenly matched, and either would be an excellent choice. Since the NETGEAR is currently $70 off, we think it’s the better option.
