Why Should You Buy the WD 8TB My Cloud Home Personal Cloud NAS?

Most people are familiar with file storage devices, such as USB flash drives and external hard drives, which usually aren’t connected to a network. As you can tell from its name, a NAS (network-attached storage), is attached to it. This means that any device on a network can access the files stored in the NAS. NAS devices are most often used to file and share content between multiple users in small offices or homes.

Another difference between USB flash drives, external drives, and NAS devices is storage capacity. NAS devices have the highest storage capacity (terabytes or petabytes) of the three. Correspondingly, NAS devices cost more than USB flash drives or external hard drives.

With the WD 8TB My Cloud Home Personal Cloud NAS, you can:

  • Store all your content, including documents, photos, music, and videos, in one place
  • Schedule regular backups of all your devices — computer, phone, and tablet — so you’ll never have to worry about losing your data
  • Organize and locate content using the My Cloud Home app
  • Access your files from any internet-connected phone, tablet, or computer
  • Provide access to specific files by creating individual accounts for coworkers, family, and friends
  • Stream your media collection to your TV, game console, and other devices without downloading it to each device

WD 8TB My Cloud Home Personal Cloud NAS Worth It?

We compared the WD 8TB My Cloud Home Personal Cloud NAS to three other popular NAS devices: the Synology DiskStation DS218+ NAS, the QNAP TS-251+ NAS, and the Seagate Personal Cloud Home Media Storage Device.

The first issue we noticed was that two of the devices support RAID configurations. (RAID protects against physical disk failure by storing multiple copies of content on different disks.) The WD 8TB My Cloud Home Personal Cloud, NAS does not support this important feature. The Synology DiskStation DS218+ NAS and the QNAP TS-251+ NAS do.

One of the devices, the QNAP TS-251+ NAS, supports 4K media streaming. While the WD 8TB My Cloud Home Personal Cloud NAS supports media streaming, it’s not 4K. Also, three of the devices have similar list prices. The QNAP TS-251+ NAS is more expensive at approximately $349.

The WD 8TB My Cloud Home Personal Cloud is a budget-friendly NAS that provides simple personal cloud access. If you were paying the list price for it, we would suggest that you purchase the Synology DiskStation DS218+ NAS, which supports RAID configurations, instead. At 37% off, however, the WD 8TB My Cloud Home Personal Cloud is a great deal if you’re willing to forego RAID.
