Motorola ThinkPhone vs. iPhone 14: What’s the Difference?

While Apple has been dominating the smartphone game for well over a decade, Motorola has been quietly hanging around, scooping up a much smaller market share. Recent releases like the Moto G Power and Moto G Play have been bringing back the company’s popularity. It is in this competitive climate that an unlikely alliance has formed: Motorola and Lenovo.

Lenovo might be a familiar brand if you’ve entered an office anytime within the last two decades. The company makes some of the most popular business laptops in the world, known as ThinkPads. Until now, they have stayed away from the smartphone industry. With the release of the ThinkPhone, that is all about to change.

Let’s tear into the ThinkPhone in more detail and see how it stacks up against Apple’s latest smartphone.

Software Features

We’ll start this discussion with software. One of the standout features of the ThinkPhone is its comprehensive security package, ThinkShield. This package enhances the Android security features of the ThinkPhone with Moto Keysafe, allowing users to create a separate safe that isolates sensitive data, making it nearly impossible for unauthorized parties to access it. This feature alone shows how much emphasis Motorola has placed on the ThinkPhone as a solution for business professionals.

In addition to shipping with the newest Android 13 operating system, the ThinkPhone is designed with IT professionals in mind, streamlining the process of remotely installing and upgrading software across a group of employee smartphones. This capability is a common procedure for IT departments everywhere, and the ThinkPhone makes it even simpler. Moreover, the seamless integration feature offered by the ThinkPhone to pair with the ThinkPad series of Lenovo laptops ensures that everything in your office space can work together efficiently.

In our opinion, the software features of the ThinkPhone truly highlight its purpose as a business phone. The built-in remote management platform and enhanced security features are game-changers for professionals who need to manage their devices with ease and security in mind. Furthermore, the seamless integration with Lenovo laptops makes the ThinkPhone a top choice for anyone looking for a complete office solution.

In contrast, the iPhone 14 runs on the newest iOS 16 update, which provides the usual updates expected of iPhones, including enhanced security, integration, and an always-on display option. While iOS 16 did bring a few new apps, such as the note-taking Freeform app, it doesn’t quite match the level of software features geared towards business professionals as the ThinkPhone.

Battery and Charging

The iPhone 14 features a 4,325 mAh battery, which is only a slight upgrade from the previous iPhone 13’s 3,227 mAh battery. However, with the improved efficiency of the A16 chip and added power-saving features, Apple claims that the iPhone 14 can last up to 80 hours on a single charge. They fail to mention that this is in standby mode and not in constant use.

In comparison, the Lenovo ThinkPhone boasts a larger 5,000 mAh battery, which gives it around 36 hours of battery life. Reviewers have raved about the ThinkPhone’s smart charging capabilities, with 30 minutes of charging reaching 85%, and the phone can be fully charged in under an hour.

While the iPhone 14 also features fast charging, it is worth noting that the power brick needed for it is sold separately. Even with the power brick, the iPhone 14 still falls behind the ThinkPhone in both categories, taking 30 minutes to charge 50% and a full charge around an hour.

In our opinion, the Lenovo ThinkPhone’s battery life and smart charging capabilities are impressive and give it a significant advantage over the iPhone 14. While the iPhone 14’s improved efficiency and power-saving features are commendable, the larger battery in the ThinkPhone is a game-changer for users who need their phone to last all day without needing to worry about charging.

Storage and Memory

The Lenovo ThinkPhone comes with 8GB of LPDDR5 memory, which is lightning-fast and capable of running multiple apps at once. In comparison, the iPhone 14 base model only has 6GB of LPDDR4 memory, which may not be as fast as the ThinkPhone’s memory. However, for most people, between 6GB and 8GB of memory is sufficient for day-to-day use.

The main difference between the two phones regarding hardware concerns storage capacities. The Lenovo ThinkPhone currently only offers a storage capacity of 256GB, which may be a bit limiting for some users. In contrast, the iPhone 14 has multiple options for storage capacity, with 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB models available. If you still remember the days when smartphones only offered 8GB to 16GB of storage, then you won’t mind which one you get.

Unfortunately, neither phone has a microSD card slot, which may be disappointing for users who want the option to expand their storage capacity. However, this is more of an issue with the ThinkPhone, as Lenovo has positioned it as a premium “business phone.” On the other hand, the iPhone 14 is marketed towards the creative crowd, and it would have been nice to see a microSD card slot for those who work with large files and need more storage.

Hardware Features

When it comes to hardware, the Lenovo ThinkPhone and iPhone 14 both have impressive specs packed into their sleek and lightweight designs.

The Lenovo ThinkPhone boasts a SnapDragon 8+ Gen 1 mobile processor, which delivers an impressive 3.0 GHz of performance. Additionally, the ThinkPhone has 8GB of LPDDR5 memory, which is quickly becoming the new standard of RAM. The ThinkPhone’s Qualcomm Adreno 730 GPU is capable enough to handle mobile games while looking great, especially when paired with the phone’s high display refresh rate of 144 Hz.

On the other hand, the iPhone 14 features Apple’s own A16 chip, which has a 6-core processor and a 5-core GPU that runs at an impressive 3.46 GHz. While the iPhone 14 comes with 6GB LPDDR4 RAM modules, the Pro and Max models both come with LPDDR5 memory.

Turning to the cameras, the Lenovo ThinkPhone has a dual forward-facing camera setup alongside a single rear-facing camera. The rear-facing camera has a 50MP sensor, and the camera features a PRO mode that allows users to shoot RAW photography. The ThinkPhone also offers impressive video quality, with the ability to record 8K videos at 30 fps.

The iPhone 14 also has a dual-camera system with two 12MP cameras, but nothing too new for iPhone users. The camera quality is great, and the ability to capture 4K video recording at 60 fps is impressive. Additionally, the iPhone 14 allows you to shoot in both RAW and HDR video recording. The TrueDepth camera on the front features a 12MP camera with autofocus pixelation and Smart HDR 4 to capture color-accurate photos from the front-facing camera.

iPhone 12 Mini vs iPhone 12

The iPhone 14 sticks to a classic design that has been loved for years.

Design

When it comes to design, both the iPhone 14 and Lenovo ThinkPhone have sleek and lightweight designs, but with some notable differences.

The Lenovo ThinkPhone boasts a rugged and durable design that carries over the classic ThinkPad look from laptops to smartphones. It is thin and lightweight, and the placement of buttons is familiar to those who are used to Android phones. However, it is worth noting that the ThinkPhone lacks an expansion memory card slot and a headphone jack, which may be a deal-breaker for some users.

Conversely, the iPhone 14 takes a more minimalist approach to design, which is typical of Apple’s iPhone line. There is not much physical difference between the iPhone 14 and its predecessors, with the volume buttons occupying their usual side on the phone’s left and the power button still located on the right. However, Apple offers multiple color options, providing customers with a higher degree of customization than the Lenovo ThinkPhone.

While the Lenovo ThinkPhone has a unique design that sets it apart from other smartphones, the iPhone 14’s minimalist design is still a crowd-pleaser. The lack of a headphone jack on the ThinkPhone might be a disadvantage for some users, but the ThinkPhone’s rugged design may appeal to those who are looking for a more durable smartphone. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preferences when choosing between the two designs.

Display Quality

When it comes to comparing the display quality of the iPhone 14 and ThinkPhone, there are a few key differences to consider. While both devices have impressive displays, each has its unique strengths.

The iPhone 14 has a slightly smaller 6.1” Apple Super Retina XDR display with a native 1080p resolution. This display is known for its excellent color accuracy and high level of brightness, which makes video playback look stunning. However, it’s worth noting that the iPhone 14 only supports HDR10 content, which is a bit limiting when compared to the Lenovo ThinkPhone.

In contrast, the Lenovo ThinkPhone comes with a larger 6.6” pOLED display with a native 1080p resolution. This display boasts HDR10+ content playback, which means that you can enjoy a wider range of colors and a more dynamic visual experience. Additionally, the ThinkPhone’s display has a higher refresh rate of 144 Hz, making the overall visual experience smoother and more fluid than the iPhone 14’s 120 Hz.

When it comes to streaming content, the ThinkPhone has another advantage over the iPhone 14. The ThinkPhone comes with Widevine L1 DRM support, which means that you can stream content from popular platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video with maximum picture quality. In comparison, the iPhone 14 does not support the Widevine L1 DRM inherently, which can make streaming from certain platforms less optimal.

Motorola ThinkPhone vs. iPhone 14: Which One Is Better? Which One Should You Use?

Distinctive factors that set the Motorola ThinkPhone and the iPhone 14 apart from each other are the unique features that separate Android and iOS and the ideal ways both phones would be used. The ThinkPhone’s standout feature is its ability to be easily managed by your company’s IT team, making it an ideal choice as a business phone.

On the other hand, the iPhone 14 represents more of the same as the past few generations of iPhones. The iPhone 14 isn’t the design overhaul that we see every few years with Apple but is instead a more refined and more powerful version of the 13. Ultimately we would recommend the iPhone 14 to most consumers over the Lenovo ThinkPhone.

Still, if you already have an iPhone 13, it’s harder to argue that it’s a worthwhile upgrade, given the similarities between the two phones and the steep price for an iPhone 14. However, in the end, the iPhone 14 offers a streamlined and comfortable user experience. It comes at a lower price than the ThinkPhone with many of the same powerful benefits, just not the enterprise-focused features.
