Meta Quest 3 vs. Meta Quest 2: What’s the Difference?

Whether you love or loathe Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook has brought a lot of new fans to the world of VR. The Meta Oculus Quest 3 will bring even more into the fold, but it might not be the best option for consumers new to VR or considering an upgrade.

The Design

If you have been expecting Meta to shrink the size of their new headset down into Meta VR Goggles, you’ll be disappointed with the new design. With that in mind, Meta says the Quest 3 is around 40% slimmer than the previous headset.

It’s something we can’t compare, but sites with early previews of the headset have seemingly confirmed the slimmer design. That means it should be more comfortable to wear during extended gaming sessions. The biggest change is in the design itself, however, thanks to an array of new cameras across the front.

VR headsets are still a long way from becoming a fashion accessory, but the Meta Quest 3 is a good-looking headset. It has a more futuristic vibe than the previous model as well, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Controllers

One of the cool things about the Meta Quest 2 is its unique controllers. While they weren’t as responsive as controllers from premium headsets, they worked well and were comfortable to use by most accounts. We were fans of the halo or ring surrounding the controller, but Meta did away with those on the Meta Quest 3.

On the Meta Quest 3, those rings are gone, and the controllers have a more streamlined feel. There is still a joystick and dual buttons on each controller, along with triggers. You’ll also still need batteries to use the controllers like the previous models. The Meta Quest 3 controllers have TruTouch haptics, which are an improvement over the older model.

The new haptic system will provide players with more immersion through new sensors in the triggers and grip. It may not seem like a game-changer, but you’ll notice a difference, and it brings the Quest’s controllers closer to the competition with feedback. You can also upgrade and use the controllers with the Quest Pro on the Meta Quest 3 for even more depth.

Features

Features are another area where the Meta Oculus Quest 3 vs. Meta Quest 2 stand apart. While the Meta Quest 2 broke new ground when it hit the streets, the new model has a variety of new and improved features.

Don’t want to use controllers? You don’t have to, as the new model has hand tracking with Direct Touch out of the gate. Battery life should be better, although we’ll have to see how that pans out with real-world testing. The biggest new feature that sets these headsets apart is mixed reality. It’s also a big reason why the Meta Quest 3 has an advantage over the Meta Quest 2 with some users.

The Meta Quest 2 has passthrough, although it is limited and only black and white. The Meta Oculus Quest 3 has full-color passthrough and cameras that are much more powerful than the previous ones. The result is a headset that will allow for new experiences, mixing the real world with virtual spaces. If you’re having trouble wrapping your head around the tech, this should do the trick.

Tech Specs

Under the hood, the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 2 share a lot of similarities, but as you’d expect, the newer headset has better tech specs. The most important are the optics, which have seen a substantial upgrade on the Meta Oculus Quest 3. The new model has pancake lenses that helped the company keep things slim and improved blurring around the edges.

The resolution on the Meta Quest 2 tops out at 1,832 x 1,920 per eye. By comparison, the Meta Quest 3 is 2,064 x 2,208 per eye with a slightly wider field of view. The aforementioned passthrough cameras are also better, and it has a new processor. The headset sports the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip along with 8GB of RAM.

While the Meta Quest’s 2 processor still performs like a champ, the extra 2GB of RAM makes a difference. Both models have a base variant with 128GB storage, but there’s no 256GB edition of the Meta Quest 3. Instead, there’s a 512GB model, although neither has an SD card slot. The Meta Quest 3 also has a slightly higher IPD range than its predecessor.

Pricing

When the Meta Quest 2 rolled out, it was considered expensive by most, but it was not outrageous by any means. It was affordable compared to other headsets, but Meta has cranked the price up on their new model.

The Meta Quest 3 is priced at $499 for the 128GB model and $649 for the 512GB version. That’s as much as a console like the PlayStation 4 and more than the OLED Switch. The Meta Quest 2 has only gotten cheaper since Meta announced the new version. Currently, it’s priced at around $299 for 128GB and $350 for the 256GB model.

The Meta Quest 3 is $200 more than the Meta Quest 2, and the older headset should get cheaper over the next year. That’s quite the gap, although the Meta Quest 3 is still cheaper than the Pro version of Meta’s headset.
