Logitech G920 vs. G923: What’s the Difference?

First impressions of both wheels definitely show a common lineage. The previous G29’s influence can be readily seen in the layout, materials, and overall fit and finish of both wheels. There are some subtle differences that will be explored, however.

Compatibility

The most glaring difference right off the bat is the compatibility of both wheels. The Logitech G920 was designed with the Xbox One in mind, and as such is tailor-made for the console. It does however function just fine with the Xbox Series X. There is additional compatibility with PCs, as the G920 uses USB connectors to connect to the console.

The Logitech G923 is a true multiplatform wheel. This doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a one-time purchase for multiple consoles, but rather that there are different models. The G923 works just fine with the PS4 and PS5, and also has models for the Xbox One and Series X. It also can function for the more hardcore simmers on PC, as it uses the same sort of USB connector as the G920.

Force Feedback

Force feedback is crucial for giving an even more immersive feel to the driving. Both wheels have force feedback, but there are some slight differences here as well.

The G920 has your typical implementation of it. It can be adjusted per game, of course. It is generally a very stout and responsive form of force feedback and may require users to greatly turn down the amount enabled by default in most games. Whether you’re playing Forza or iRacing, it does the job just fine for making sure you can feel the differences in roads, grass, dirt, and any other surface the wheels might come across.

The G923 has the same general force feedback setup as the G920 but has additional functionality to separate it from its predecessor. Logitech has developed something called TrueForce, which aims to more fully replicate the sensation of driving. The implementation of this is done quite well and makes for an immersive driving experience. Compatibility for TrueForce is more limited, however, with only a handful of games fully supporting the standard. TrueForce can currently be used with Assetto Corsa Competizione, Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing, the F1 series, and Dirt Rally 2.0. These are on the more hardcore side of racing games, offering intense simulations of all systems involved. It makes sense that this handful of developers has taken advantage of the functionality.

Controls

The layout on both wheels is functionally identical. A directional pad and face buttons adorn the front of the steering wheel itself. This aids in accessing the various menus and systems during gameplay. Materials and build quality for the wheels are equally comparable, with the wheel itself being composed of leather and steel.

Build quality isn’t lacking in either wheel’s case, which given their similar function it only stands to reason. The pedals included with both are equally sturdy. A clutch, accelerator, and brake pedal are all present and they are built of sturdy materials to handle frantic racing action.

Where they depart is in the rev indicator. While this might not be a necessity for most, it does aid in figuring out when is an optimal time to shift. Generally speaking, you’re not going to want to run races in an automatic transmission, so being able to pinpoint ideal times makes for quicker lap times. The G920 has no such provisions for revving lights, thanks in part to the protocols in place on the Xbox. The G923, on the other hand, has them clear and present on the front of the wheel. It isn’t a major upgrade but a welcome one regardless.
