LG UltraWide Monitors vs Samsung Ultrawides: Which Is Better?

When you have extra desktop space, there’s nothing better than an UltraWide monitor for your PC. They open the door to new possibilities and aren’t nearly as expensive as panels of the past.

When shopping for a new display in this range, LG UltraWide Monitors vs. Samsung UltraWides is the first thing you should consider. Both are leading manufacturers of these large displays and you might be surprised by how closely some models compare.

What Is an Ultrawide Monitor?

For decades, monitors stuck to the same form factor and aspect ratio. As technology advanced and panels became thinner, the displays started to get wider. That wasn’t good enough for some, which is where “Ultra” wide monitors come into play.

An Ultrawide monitor has an aspect ratio of 21:9. You’re getting over 30% more screen space over a widescreen monitor and well over double that of a traditional PC monitor.

This is ideal when you need to work with multiple windows side-by-side or for entertainment. These monitors can provide a more immersive experience compared to the standard 16:9 ratio.

LG UltraWide Monitors vs. Samsung Ultrawides: What’s the Difference?

The first thing to know about Samsung and LG monitors is that both companies have new monitors in a variety of sizes along with older models that are still available. The easiest way to break down their Ultrawide collection is by size, starting with the large 49-inch monitors from LG and Samsung.

Most of LG’s UltraWide monitors are listed as QHD or DQHD. The LG 49WQ95C-W is one monitor in the DQHD class, with a resolution of 5,120 x 1,440.

The display uses Nano IPS technology on the curved panel which is ideal for professionals thanks to 98% DCI-P3 and VESA Display HDR 400. It’s a 144Hz monitor that’s G-SYNC compatible, although there are also 60HZ variants available like the LG UltraWide 49WL95C-WY.

Another ultra-wide 4K monitor from LG is the LG 40WP95C-W. This monitor isn’t as large as their 49-inch panels and has a higher price tag. But it comes with some top-tier features.

The curved WUHD panel has a resolution of 5,120 x 2,160 and features a nearly bezel-less design. A 96W Thunderbolt 4 port provides ample power delivery while dual 10W speakers help to immerse you in video games and movies.

Those monitors are some of the newer and current models from LG in this size range, but there are more than a dozen older ones along with discontinued models. As for Samsung, the Odyssey series monitors make up most of their displays over 40 inches.

While the resolution takes a hit to 3,840 x 1,080, it has a 1 ms response time with a 144Hz refresh rate. It’s reasonably priced for its size, and we’re fans of the dual QHD variant as well. This Odyssey CRG Series monitor has a comparable price tag with a slightly higher resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.

With displays over 40 inches, there are more options from Samsung. LG’s computer monitors have a slight edge with resolution in this class, but both have several panels that are suitable for gaming.

30 to 40-inch Samsung and LG Ultrawide Monitors

If you’re interested in a smaller ultra-wide display from Samsung and LG, the options are vast. You can find more than 70 monitors and variants in this range from LG including older models, while Samsung has less than 40.

On the opposite end of the pricing spectrum is the LG UltraGear 34P83A-B computer monitor. It’s built for gamers with a GtG time of 1ms and has G-SYNC and FreeSync Premium.

The 144Hz panel has a slight curve and a modern design that will look great on any desktop. Looking for something a little larger but just as responsive? Then you’ll appreciate the LG 32WN95C-W.

The LG 32WN95C-W has many of the same features found on other monitors from the company, but with a Thunderbolt 3 port and QHD+ panel. It has a resolution of 3,840 x 1,600 with a response time of 1 ms and a refresh rate of 144 Hz.

We found that LG has more options with computer monitors from 30 to 40 inches, regardless of resolution or features. While pricing is comparable, we’re giving LG an advantage due to the sheer number of displays and variants.

Those are two of the more highly-rated UltraWide monitors from the company, and better than you’ll find from Samsung when you want a monitor under 30 inches. One only Ultrawide monitor available with a high rating of less than 30 inches from Samsung is the Odyssey G50A Gaming Monitor.

The design is similar to the larger models, but this one is only 27 inches. You can put it into portrait mode, and the content will pop thanks to the QHD resolution on the 165Hz panel.

LG UltraWide Monitors vs. Samsung Ultrawides: What’s the Same?

If you took the branding of monitors from Samsung and LG, we think most would have trouble telling them apart. While the companies have introduced some distinct designs with their ultra-wide monitors, Samsung arguably has the more cutting-edge style through their Odyssey line.

You can find monitors from 49 inches to around 25 inches from both companies. Resolutions per range are also comparable, so you can find FHD monitors mixed in with QHD and 4K monitors across the range. Pricing is a toss-up as we found LG and Samsung have competitive pricing from their premium panels down to their more budget-friendly displays.

Samsung vs. LG: 4 Must-Know Facts

  1. In 2020, Samsung developed the world’s first 27-inch QHD monitor with a 1 ms response time.
  2. LG actually stands for Lucky Goldstar.
  3. Samsung was the first company to produce a 21.3-inch UXGA TFT-LCD monitor.
  4. LG makes IPS panels for brands like Apple, Dell, and ASUS.

LG UltraWide Monitors vs. Samsung Ultrawides: Which One Is Better?

The battle between LG UltraWide monitors and Samsung Ultrawides comes down to what you’re looking for from a new monitor. If you’re a gamer, you can find compatible options for NVIDIA and AMD from both manufacturers. The companies also have a range of ultra-widescreen monitors geared towards professionals with color calibration.

With that in mind, we think the best Ultrawide monitor under 30 inches is the LG UltraWide 26WQ500-B if your budget is tight. Consumers looking for something large should consider the DQHD model of the LG 49WQ95-C.

We also love the high-end Samsung Odyssey G9 and the new 36-inch model of the Samsung ViewFinity S6. If you’re looking for the best 5K panel and aren’t concerned about width, check out our comparison of the Apple Studio Display and LG UltraFine.
