LG CX OLED Overview

The LG CX OLED TV is a work of art that brings entertainment to life. Its stunning OLED display technology creates an infinite canvas of rich, deep blacks and radiant, lifelike colors that flow seamlessly into one another. Each pixel illuminates individually to deliver an awe-inspiring viewing experience with breathtaking detail and clarity.

The sleek, modern design of the TV seamlessly integrates into any living space, while the intuitive smart WebOS platform and ThinQ technology allow you more customization options than you’d imagine.

Release Date and Price

The LG CX OLED TV was launched in February 2020 alongside the slightly fancier LG Gallery OLED TV. It was initially priced as a medium-to-high-end TV, with the smallest 48” model sold at $1,299 and the largest 77” sold at $2,999.

Considering the leveling up to C1, C2, and C3 models in consecutive years, you can now get any size for a few thousand dollars less than the initial price.

Different Models

LG CX is the entry-level model that’s seen numerous technological advancements and physical improvements in recent years. As a result, LG has released three new models for the LG C-series line-up:

  • The LG C1: released in 2021, featuring slight improvements to the CX. Among the significant improvements included the advanced Alpha 9 Gen 4 processor.
  • The LG C2: released in 2022, offering a sharper, brighter display with a narrower frame.
  • The LG C3: set to hit the market in the spring of 2023. It offers better viewing angles and fewer color and brightness distortions than the preceding models.

Features

Below, we break down the main features of the LG CX to show you how this panel performs.

Design

The LG CX features a razor-thin panel design with a tiny physical frame and 0.5 cm-thick bezels. This is made possible because it uses OLED technology, which utilizes individual light-emitting diodes compared to LCD backlights that take up more space and result in bulky TV designs.

The sleek, modern design of the LG CX OLED TV ensures it fits and blends into any living space. It’s impressively slim, with the bottom half (chassis) being the thickest part of the screen, measuring 5 cm, and this gets thinner as you move up, with the panel section being about 4 mm thick. Crazy, right?

The slim profile of the LG CX makes it perfect for wall mounting, although the VESA mounting points lay lower than you’ll find on most other OLED screens. As a result, it may be impractical to try reusing an old wall bracket for the LG CX. This OLED panel also comes with a wide, downward-angled metal stand that you can use to prop your TV on your favorite stand.

Picture Quality

The LG CX OLED TV can defend its position at the top thanks to its excellent picture quality. Thanks to OLED technology, it produces vibrant, rich, accurate colors and deep blacks.

The CX also supports a wide color gamut, including HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Dolby Vision, which results in incredibly vivid and accurate colors that pop off the screen. The HDR10 increases the TV’s overall brightness, so you enjoy a superior, natural-looking, and engaging viewing experience. The fast response times and low input lag also ensure that fast-paced action sequences remain smooth, seamless, and captivating.

The Alpha 9 Gen 3 processor and ThinQ AI software also improve video quality by differentiating various on-screen objects, like faces and graphics, and adjusting the quality accordingly. There’s also a setting that enables the software to detect the type of content you’re watching — such as sports or animations — and modify the picture quality to match.

Sound Quality

LG noticed a lag in the audio quality of most OLED TVs and used this as a stepping stone to creating a panel that performed better than most. The CX OLED TV uses an AI Acoustic Tuning setting that allows you to adjust and customize the sound to a particular room.

It also supports Dolby Atmos, which takes your movie, gaming, or music listening experience to the next level by expanding surround sound. You can also choose between preset sound modes, including Cinema and Standard. The standard mode comes with a five-band equalizer that allows you to adjust frequencies between 100 Hz and 10,000 Hz.

Remote Control

Have you ever heard of a magic remote? It’s the kind of remote control that allows for intuitive control enabled by scrolling, clicking, and speech recognition.

The LG CX OLED TV comes with the curved LG Magic Remote control that can be used as a universal controller. It comes with a scrollable and clickable ball that allows you to control the cursor on the screen like you would with a mouse and the standard channel and volume buttons found on other remote controls.

The LG Magic Remote works with Alexa or Google Assistant to provide relevant and accurate search results. These voice-controlled virtual assistants are built-in, so you don’t need external listening devices. It also has shortcut buttons to some of the most popular streaming sites, like Amazon Prime and Netflix, to save scrolling time. Unfortunately, the remote for the CX doesn’t have far-field microphones, so you have to bring it as close as possible to your mouth to give the commands.

Smart TV Features

The LG CX TV is powered by the WebOS smart TV software, one of the best smart TV platforms available. It’s easy to navigate, very responsive, and highly customizable. It supports popular streaming platforms like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Disney+. You can find more apps on the LG app store, but don’t expect as wide a variety as you’d typically find in the Sony or other Android TV app stores.

Thanks to the unique LG Think IQ technology, you’ll love getting customized recommendations based on what you’ve been watching, browsing, or searching for. This same technology allows your TV to take voice commands submitted using the magic remote.

The customization options available with the LG CX OLED TV are nothing less than impressive. For instance, you can access all inputs, outputs, and Internet of Things (IoT) settings on the Home Dashboard, choose which ones you want to appear, and the onscreen prompts you’ll be getting.

Gaming

If you’re a gamer, the LG CX OLED TV is an excellent choice thanks to its low input lag and support for high refresh rates. This means you’ll have a smooth and responsive gaming experience, even in fast-paced games. This OLED panel also ensures you get the deepest blacks possible, so you can enjoy an immersive gaming experience even when playing games with really dark backgrounds.

It supports several gaming-specific features, such as NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync compatibility, which can help reduce screen tearing and stuttering in games. As mentioned before, the CX also supports a wide color gamut and HDR, which can enhance the visuals in compatible games.

Compatibility

This mid-level OLED TV has numerous and well-specified connections. Starting with the most important, the CX has four well-defined HDMI 2.1 inputs capable of delivering 4K content at 120 FPS. It also has a full variable 120Hz refresh rate, which will be hard to max out with either old or new games.

The 4 HDMI 2.1 ports also support VRR (variable refresh rate), ALLM (auto low latency mode), and ARC/eARC (audio return channel). Other connections and inputs available include three USB ports, a built-in ethernet port, Wi-Fi connectivity, and Bluetooth.

LG CX OLED TV: is it a Buy?

Even with the newer models now in stock, the LG CX may still be a worthy investment that could save you a few bucks while offering phenomenal entertainment. Let’s explore why you should and shouldn’t consider taking this OLED panel home.

Buy it if…

You’re looking to save a few coins on your next OLED TV. Although it’s been replaced by newer models, this panel remains a fan favorite, and you can do without some of the small improvements made to the succeeding models. Its slim profile is a sight to behold, and it’ll add a touch of class and sophistication to a room no matter the size you choose, whether the 48”, 55’, 65”, or 77”.

You’re a movie enthusiast, sports fanatic, or gamer looking for a wide variety of smart TV features and customization options. The LG CX is a good option that offers spectacular visuals, fast refresh rates, and commendable audio quality.

Don’t Buy it if…

You’re worried about how long LG will continue supporting the CX software updates and new features. Also, if you’re not looking to make the purchase immediately, the CX might not be the best option for you because, even now, the stock is very limited.

We can’t forget to mention that if you don’t have a limited budget, you can skip buying the CX and go for the newer models, such as the C2 and C3, which offer more advanced technology and smart TV features.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an OLED display?

An OLED display is a type that utilizes organic LEDs to emit light in response to an electric current. The technology allows manufacturers like LG to produce thin and sleek TV sets without backlights. It also ensures that viewers enjoy superior picture quality at wider angles and faster response times.

Which is the better television between the LG CX and the LG C1?

The two are generally very similar because only slight adjustments were made to the LG CX to produce the C1. The C1 is newer and has more advanced features like the WebOS 6.0 platform, an Alpha 9 Gen 4 processor, and a new “Gaming Optimizer” setting. Inevitably, the LG C1 performs better than the CX because it is newer, especially in gaming.

Is the LG CX bright enough?

The LG CX is bright enough for most rooms, with deep black levels and excellent HDR performance. However, you can expect the succeeding models to offer better visuals and brightness levels.

Is it worth buying the LG CX OLED TV in 2023?

Yes. The LG CX OLED TV is worth purchasing in 2023 as it offers good performance, numerous smart TV features, and a friendlier price tag than the succeeding models.

How long can an LG CX OLED TV last?

The latest OLED TVs, including the CX, can last up to 100,000 hours. However, the lifespan is affected by environmental elements and burn-in. Additionally, there’s a concern over the long-term performance of LG OLED TVs because they are affected by permanent image retention or burn-in.
