Kobalt 40V Mower vs. DeWalt 20V Max Mower: Which One Wins?

Kobalt 40V Mower vs. DeWalt 20V Max Mower: Which One Wins?

Keeping a mower gassed up and running well can be as much of a task as cutting the grass itself. Cordless mowers do away with gas and cut back on maintenance, and become more popular each year. We’re going to take a look at two popular companies’ lineups in our Kobalt 40V mower vs. DeWalt 20V Max mower review. While these brands are entirely different in the eyes of most consumers, you might be surprised at how closely their mowers stack up against each other.

Kobalt 40V Mower vs. DeWalt 20V Max Mower: What’s the Difference?

Kobalt and DeWalt are two names contractors wouldn’t necessarily put together a decade ago, but pricing has brought the brands closer together in many areas. That includes lawnmowers, where Kobalt has a lineup of 40V mowers comparable to DeWalt’s dual battery-powered 20V Max collection.

Kobalt 40V Mowers

Kobalt has two lines of 40-volt mowers with 40-volt and 40-volt max systems. Batteries are interchangeable, but their regular 40V mowers aren’t sold as bare tools. You can only pick them up in a kit with batteries, and they are two of the pricier models from the company.

The Kobalt KSPM 1040A-03 is listed as a Gen4 mower, and it’s self-propelled with a 6Ah battery. That provides enough runtime for yards up to a half acre in size. The 3-position cutting height system tops out at 4” and the mower has a 20-inch cut width. A 3-in-1 design allows you to mulch grass or discharge it, just like the Kobalt KMP 4230D-06 40v cordless mower.

This mower provides more range thanks to a 7-position height adjustment system and it cuts a wider path at 21 inches. The front and rear wheels are an inch larger, and while it’s self-propelled, it has smaller batteries. The KMP 4230D-6 comes with two chargers and two 4.0Ah batteries which provide extended runtime through dual-battery ports on the mower.

It also has a bright LED headlight, but both mowers have steel decks and brushless motors. You’ll find the same features on the company’s 40V Max mowers, although there are more models and configurations to choose from.

Kobalt 40V Max Mowers

There are five models with the Max moniker from Kobalt. While most have a very similar set of features, there are minor but important differences between each model. This is where you’ll also find the company’s most budget-friendly mower with the Kobalt KM 4041-06.

The Kobalt KM 4041-06 cordless mower has the smallest wheels with 7-inch tires in the front and back. It’s not self-propelled, but provides users with a half-dozen height adjustments with a range from 1.12 inches to 3.75 inches. It cuts a 19-inch path through yards with ease and comes with a 4.0Ah battery. It’s priced at $269, which makes it one of the more affordable 40V mowers around.

If you already have a battery from one of the company’s 40V tools, the KPM-1040B-03 may be a better solution. It has the same specs, but with a cutting path 1/2-inch wider and not as many adjustments. It doesn’t come with a battery but is only $219 as a bare tool with no accessories. The KM 2041B-06 has large 10-inch rear wheels and a 5.0Ah battery while the KPM 1040A-03 has smaller wheels but a larger battery.

There are only two self-propelled 40V Max mowers from Kobalt, however. The KMP 2040-06 is sold as a tool only but is essentially the same mower as the KM 2041B-06 with a self-propelling system. Alternatively, you’ll get a smaller cutting path on the Kobalt KSPM 1040B-03, and it doesn’t have as many height adjustments although you can pick it up with a battery and charger.

Kobalt 40V Mower Pricing

Kobalt keeps things straightforward with pricing on their cordless mowers. Most come with batteries, but bare tool models can provide a great value if you’re already invested in their 40V ecosystem. With a range of $219 to around $650, they have a price point for everyone, especially homeowners looking to purchase their first battery-powered mower.

You can purchase a handful of their mowers through online retailers, but their current lineup is sold through Lowe’s as Kobalt is one of their house brands. Given the popularity of Lowe’s finding a mower shouldn’t be an issue considering there are more than 2,000 locations throughout the United States.

DeWalt 20V Max Mowers

DeWalt has five cordless 20V Max mowers listed on their official website. Several are variants, however, with slight differences in the cutting width, height, or wheel size. With that in mind, all of the company’s mowers have several flagship features including brushless motors, stamped steel decks, and dual-battery systems.

Most self-propelled mowers are rear-wheel drive, but DeWalt took a different approach with the DeWalt DCMWSP244U2 and its variant, the DCMWSP244U2-CA. This mower is front-wheel drive with a 21.5-inch steel deck and adjustable wheels. Those wheels are 8 inches and the mower is powered by dual 10Ah batteries.

It has a respectable price tag, and the DeWalt DCMWSP255U2 is comparable in that regard. This mower has the same number of height and handle adjustments, but is a rear-wheel drive system in the XR class. It comes with the same size batteries but has larger wheels in the front and back.

Consumers looking for a comparable mower with more battery life should consider the DeWalt DCMWSP255Y2, which comes with dual 12.0Ah batteries. The company’s lineup is split evenly with rear-wheel and front-wheel systems, but they also sell an affordable cordless push mower with similar specifications.

DeWalt’s DCMWP233U2 has all the same bells & whistles aside from a self-propelled drive unit and comes as a complete kit with dual batteries and a charger. Their 20V Max mowers have a 3-year warranty along with 1 year of free service and a 90-day money-back guarantee.

Kobalt 40V Mower vs. DeWalt 20V Max Mower: Which One Wins?

Both DeWalt and Kobalt sell a range of mowers with sturdy steel decks and brushless motors. These are key features to look for with any electric mower if you’re concerned about longevity. The cutting width and height range is standard compared to other brands in the space, although Kobolt offers more variety than DeWalt in those areas.

Kobalt also has a better warranty at 5 years across the board on the mower, battery, and chargers. DeWalt has a 3-year guarantee by comparison. There are more mowers to choose from with cheaper price points through Kobalt, but DeWalt mowers aren’t tied to Lowe’s.

They are a brand with a fantastic reputation in the tool world and have around 75 years more experience than Kobalt. You’re buying into either company’s eco-system to a degree with these cordless mowers, but DeWalt’s is far more impressive than Kobalt’s. They also have front-wheel drive mowers, which provide more maneuverability in yards.

While we feel like both companies’ cordless mowers will get the job done, consider the battery systems along with your budget. Warranties and customer service are important as well if you live in an area that’s sunny all year.
